Book excerpt: Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a pleasant, soft-spoken, low-key Southerner, and the best hitwoman in the business. Now retired and living in Mexico, she nearly dies herself when a sniper kills her boyfriend, the son of a local druglord, and while the boy's father vows vengeance, Rinker knows something he doesn't: The boy wasn't the target-she was-and now she is going to have to disappear to find the killer herself. The FBI and DEA draft Davenport to help track her down, and with his fiancie deep in wedding preparations, he's really just as happy to go-but he has no idea what he's getting into. For Rinker is as unpredictable as ever, and between her, her old bosses in the St. Louis mob, the Mexican druglord, and the combined, sometimes warring, forces of U.S. law enforcement, this is one case that will get more dangerous as it goes along. And when the crossfire comes, anyone standing in the middle won't stand a chance.... Filled with the rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, Mortal Prey proves that John Sandford just keeps getting better.

Book excerpt: Novels eleven through fifteen in #1 New York Times bestselling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Sandford’s Prey series, featuring Minneapolis homicide investigator Lucas Davenport. EASY PREY The murder of a supermodel during an A-list party incites a media firestorm—and confirms Lucas Davenport’s worst suspicions. The model is only the first victim—and one of his own men is a prime suspect. CHOSEN PREY Art history professor James Qatar’s hobby was taking secret photographs of women. Then one day his fantasy went too far. Now the tables have turned. It’s Qatar who has become an obsession—of Lucas Davenport’s. And for both men, there’s no turning back. MORTAL PREY Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a soft-spoken Southern beauty, and one of the FBI’s most wanted killers. Now, they’re crossing paths again. With nothing left to lose she can only be stopped by Davenport—or count him among her victims… NAKED PREY The two victims—male and female, one black, one white—were found hanging from a tree in the Minnesota woods. It’s a crime with gruesome and ugly implications, but as Lucas Davenport discovers, the motive runs deeper than anyone imagined. HIDDEN PREY Theories abound when a Russian gets himself killed on the shore of Lake Superior—shot with fifty-year-old bullets. But when it turns out he had very high government connections, Lucas Davenport gets the call.

A dangerous quest leads him into a treacherous jungle for training as a spirit-warrior. But still unbeknownst to him is the terrible cost of traveling between worlds. Can the allies of the Oikoumene band together against an onslaught of demonic forces? Can Justin defeat this ancient evil? Or has the enemy already won? Book excerpt: It's almost a universal phenomenon. Nobody knows when, how, and why it started, but society somehow allows their political leaders to get away with nearly anything, up to and including murder- at least in many countries in Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Central and South America. Here in these United States of America, no one is suggesting (at least not me) that our political leaders are guilty of committing murders. To the extent that anybody can accuse them of such, it's their enacting of lax gun laws at the behest of the NRA. Thanks to these laws, anyone applying for a permit to buy an automatic assault weapon is no more subjected to rigorous background check than they are buying candy. By this and this alone, U.S. politicians are partly to blame in the deaths of innocent people. Anyway, this book is not about murders or guns. In a way though, it's about "death"- the death of reason and sense in politics. It's about some insidious behavior that politicians get away with. Society itself is to blame for tacitly permitting politicians to engage in such a behavior. So here in the United States, as is the case everywhere, politicians get away with too much: Corruption; lying or showing a disdain for facts; being lazy; stealing; and cheating on their spouses. We also allow them to make promises that they can't possibly keep- or never keeping promises that they can easily keep. We have put the bar for tolerable behaviors, or conduct expected of our leaders, very low. We have reached a stage where the moral code of our politicians is on par with, if not worse than, that of criminals. Well, this author decided to draw a line, a "red line," if you want to be dramatic, on dumbassedness- or rather- on the dumb things that the people we look up to in society, especially our political leaders, say. They can get away with lying, being corrupt, etc., but they will not be let off so easily for saying things that are decidedly dumb. Just as Iran will hear from Israel and the U.S. if its nuclear (or as George W. Bush would say, "nucular") ambitions crosses Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu's somewhat arbitrary "red line," politicians here will hear from me if and when they cross my own arbitrarily laid "dumbassedness" red line. Like most citizens, I'll tolerate- barely- such maladapted behaviors of our politicians as corruption, cheating, infidelity, lying, not keeping campaign promises, etc., but not dumbassedness. This is what this book is about. This author's blood boils when he hears these stupid politicians, like Indiana's U.S. Senate candidate, Richard Mourdock say such things as, "A woman being raped and conceiving as a result, is in God's grand scheme of things." That is, God wanted it that way, and therefore that the victim shouldn't be allowed to terminate such a pregnancy. Unlike most books, this is not one long, continuous story. One need not necessarily start reading from page one or chapter one successively to the last. One can jump around, or even begin with the last chapter. Every chapter is a stand-alone chapter. There is no "continuity" to worry about if you decide to read the book in a sort of haphazard manner. You're going to encounter unbelievable dumbassedness of our politicians on every page.Politicians and other leaders of society may get away with having the morals and ethics of alley cats, but I ́ll be damned if I ́ll let them get away with the immaturity of pre-adolescents and the dumbassedness of a jackass. This is my raison d ́etre, or if you want to be "religious" about it, it ́s my calling.Let me add that had my sense of self-preservation not been so heightened, I ́d have moved to Russia to take on Emperor Vladimir Putin. But I don ́t like having Polonium-210 as part of my diet. Thank you and enjoy. Kabembo Chinku.

Book excerpt: The lord of snark, Lawrence Dorfman, is back! With this treasury of backhanded compliments, sarcastic insults, and catty comebacks, Dorfman gives us transformative wisdom that’s sure to change your life—or at least induce a light chuckle. One question plagues us all: How do we survive all the Sturm und Drang of everyday life? The answer is but one word: snark. “She wears her clothes as if they were thrown on by a pitchfork.” —Jonathan Swift “Why don’t you get a haircut? You look like a chrysanthemum.” —P. G. Wodehouse “He’s a mental midget with the IQ of a fence post.” —Tom Waits “They hardly make ’em like him anymore—but just to be on the safe side, he should be castrated anyway.” —Hunter S. Thompson “He has a Teflon brain . . . nothing sticks” —Lily Tomlin “He has no more backbone than a chocolate éclair.” —Theodore Roosevelt Snark will keep the wolves at bay (or at least out on the porch). Snark, much like a double scotch, will help you deal with relatives, shopping, and rudeness; it is an outlet for the unleashed vitriolic bile that’s saved itself up over the months. Like a shield, it will protect you while you go about your life. Snark is your answer!

She was assembled early in the morning (right after my morning devotions ? in fact, I realize that many of my morning devotions somehow crept into the e-Editorials), and then forwarded by e-mail to over 300 people all around the world. I did this two or three days a week for 10 years. Like I said, maybe I am a little crazy. ... 2004 was a lengthy year, filled with commentary about the impending American Presidential Election (yes, George W. Bush won again), fluctuating health issues, and much sharing of prayer requests and praise reports among the faithful and beloved Readers. 2004 was so long that I had to split it into two books; this is Part Two, covering July through December. Like its sister books, e-Jeanne: 2004 (Part Two) comes out looking like a fair-sized phone book; you?ll need strong arms and strong hands to hold it while reading ... and I strongly suggest you have a sturdy bookmark.

Book excerpt: Now in Paperback The Road to Science Fiction is a six-volume anthology that covers the development of this genre from its earliest prototypes to the current day. Created originally to provide anthologies for use in classrooms in the late 1970s, these volumes became mass-market sellers. Between an ancient Roman's trip to the moon and the fantastic tales of H.G. Wells lies a journey through time and space and an awesome evolution in scientific thinking. From Gilgamesh's search for immortality to Edgar Allan Poe's balloon trip in the year 2848 these and other key works are gathered together for the first time in one anthology, complete with revealing commentary on the authors, their eras, and the role each played in establishing what we today recognize as science fiction. Volume 4 From Here to Forever covers the period from 1950-1992, illustrating how science fiction can be as concerned with language and character as much as traditional fiction and anything in the mainstream. Includes stories by Jorge Luis Borges, Richard Matheson, C. M. Kornbluth, Jack Vance, and Pamela Zoline.

Book excerpt: When art historian Melissa Warren inherits three of her grandmother’s paintings that have captivated her since childhood, she sets out to discover more about the little known artist and the locations of the mysterious landscapes. Her search takes her to the Colorado Bear Conservancy and the artist’s great-granddaughter, Sula Johansen. Sula is reluctant to help Melissa, but their instant chemistry is impossible to ignore. Sula is torn between falling in love and hiding the truth about who and what she really is. Of course, if Melissa paid closer attention to minor details—like the fact that Sula enjoys nibbling berries off the vine, is unusually strong, and consumes way too much honey—Melissa might not be in for the shock of her life.
