Or leave it under her pillow for the tooth fairy? Little Rabbit solves her dilemma in this gentle classic that captures all the excitement of losing a first tooth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebrated social psychologist offers a radical new perspective on cultural differences that reveals why some countries, cultures, and individuals take rules more seriously and how following the rules influences the way we think and act. In Rule Makers, Rule Breakers, Michele Gelfand, “an engaging writer with intellectual range” (The New York Times Book Review), takes us on an epic journey through human cultures, offering a startling new view of the world and ourselves. With a mix of brilliantly conceived studies and surprising on-the-ground discoveries, she shows that much of the diversity in the way we think and act derives from a key difference—how tightly or loosely we adhere to social norms. Just as DNA affects everything from eye color to height, our tight-loose social coding influences much of what we do. Why are clocks in Germany so accurate while those in Brazil are frequently wrong? Why do New Zealand’s women have the highest number of sexual partners? Why are red and blue states really so divided? Why was the Daimler-Chrysler merger ill-fated from the start? Why is the driver of a Jaguar more likely to run a red light than the driver of a plumber’s van? Why does one spouse prize running a tight ship while the other refuses to sweat the small stuff? In search of a common answer, Gelfand spent two decades conducting research in more than fifty countries. Across all age groups, family variations, social classes, businesses, states, and nationalities, she has identified a primal pattern that can trigger cooperation or conflict. Her fascinating conclusion: behavior is highly influenced by the perception of threat. “A useful and engaging take on human behavior” (Kirkus Reviews) with an approach that is consistently riveting, Rule Makers, Ruler Breakers thrusts many of the puzzling attitudes and actions we observe into sudden and surprising clarity.

She introduces the notion of probabilistic content and shows how it plays a central role not only in epistemology, but in the philosophy of mind and language. Just you can believe and assert propositions, you can believe and assert probabilistic contents.

Book excerpt: DISC, the International Symposium on Distributed Computing, is an annual conference for the presentation of research on the theory, design, analysis, implementation, and application of distributed systems and network. DISC 2004 was held on October 4-7, 2004, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. There were 142 papers submitted to DISC this year. These were read and evaluated by the program committee members, assisted by external reviewers. The quality of submissions was high and we were unable to accept many dese- ing papers. Thirty one papers were selected at the program committee meeting in Lausanne to be included in these proceedings. The proceedings include an extended abstract of the invited talk by Ueli Maurer. In addition, they include a eulogy for Peter Ruzicka by Shmuel Zaks. The Best Student Paper Award was split and given to two papers: the paper “Efficient Adaptive Collect Using Randomization”, co-authored by Hagit Attiya, Fabian Kuhn, Mirjam Wattenhofer and Roger Wattenhofer, and the paper “Coupling and Self-stabilization”,co-authored by Laurent Fribourg, Stephane Messika and Claudine Picaronny. The support of the CWI and EPFL is gratefully acknowledged. The review process and the preparation of this volume were done using CyberChairPRO. I also thank Sebastien Baehni and Sidath Handurukande for their crucial help with these matters. August 2004 Rachid Guerraoui Peter Ruzicka 1947-2003 Peter died on Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the age of 56, after a short disease. He was a Professor of Informatics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics in Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia. Those of us who knew him through DISC and other occasions mourn his death and cherish his memory

Book excerpt: On the Loose is a journey through the American West, led by two adventurous brothers, Terry and Renny Russell. It is a chronicle of triumph and tragedy--the triumph of gaining an insight about oneself through an understanding of the natural world; the tragedy of seeing its splendor increasingly threatened by people who don't know or don't care. The photographs, all taken by the authors, capture Yosemite, Point Reyes, the High Sierra, the Great Basin, and Glen Canyon in the1950s and 1960s.Despite the fact that On the Loose has been out of print for more than a decade, contemporary readers have not forgotten this timeless classic. Readers have described On the Loose as moving and inspirational. One reader says, "This book made me cry at [age] 16, and it still does at 45." Another reader notes, "This book expresses that deep yearning to wander, to explore, to live fully like no other artistic expression I have ever come across."

They all got their professional starts in the American Basketball Association. What do Julius Erving, Larry Brown, Moses Malone, Bob Costas, the Indiana Pacers, the San Antonio Spurs and the Slam Dunk Contest have in common? They all got their professional starts in the American Basketball Association. The NBA may have won the financial battle, but the ABA won the artistic war. With its stress on wide-open individual play, the adoption of the 3-point shot and pressing defense, and the encouragement of flashy moves and flying dunks, today's NBA is still—decades later —just the ABA without the red, white and blue ball. Loose Balls is, after all these years, the definitive and most widely respected history of the ABA. It's a wild ride through some of the wackiest, funniest, strangest times ever to hit pro sports—told entirely through the (often incredible) words of those who played, wrote and connived their way through the league's nine seasons.

Book excerpt: An ordinary man leaves his house for a routine drive to work in order to earn his daily bread. Ten minutes into his drive, he is stopped by the utility workers working on a piece of road damaged by the last night’s torrential flood storm, and his trip is inadvertently delayed. Pressed by time to be still on time for work, the legal system shows its true teeth and catches up on him. Wrapping its claws around him, the system arbitrarily turns his normally innocent trip into an unexpected nightmarish show of bureaucratic power on loose. Perspective (A driver’s tale) is an inexorable product of the modern democracy in its present decline and metamorphosis into yet another monstrous police state, with some of its subliminal and chameleonic workings exposed. The pen that catches only a fraction of the highly diversified destructive forces responsible for its decline is sometimes vitriolic, never apologetic, always striving for objectivity and reason, and its language at times effusive, at others laconic, all in service of clarity. Its vocabulary ranges from simple, homebound, to complex, technical, in support of the moods that shift from funny, hilarious, sarcastic and ironic to iconoclastic, expository, satirical and heretical, the dichotomy presupposed. The panoply of expression is, however, and above all, direct and unceremonious.
