Book excerpt: When Emiliano Edelman’s life is shattered by a terrorist’s bomb that destroys Buenos Aires’ Jewish community centre it sparks his quest to find family who fled from Eastern Europe to Canada decades earlier. Moments after arriving at the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina, an explosion throws Emiliano from an elevator and he wakes up in the hospital, his girlfriend missing. Unable to cope with the aftermath of the bombing, he decides to leave Argentina, and by chance encounters visitors from Winnipeg who encourage him to move there. When Emiliano announces his plan to his family, his grandfather recalls that they have family in Canada, although he knows little about them. But Emiliano’s background in history gives him the tools he needs to begin his exploration. Armed with two Yiddish names and considerable optimism, Emiliano travels to Winnipeg, combing archives, questioning elderly residents and reading row upon row of tombstones. He follows the family as it travelled from Bessarabia and split into Argentinian and Canadian branches. Although he grieves for his girlfriend, Lia, he finds that genealogy fills a gap in his life and when he meets Naomi, who shows him around Winnipeg, the stage is set for another revelation. With common sense, dogged determination and more than a little luck, he ultimately finds his cousins in the least likely place.

Download or read book Shaky Town written by Lou Mathews and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shaky Town, Lou Mathews has written a timeless novel of working-class Los Angeles. A former mechanic and street racer, he tells his story in cool and panoramic style, weaving together the tragedies and glories of one of L.A.’s eastside neighborhoods. From a teenage girl caught in the middle of a gang war to a priest who has lost his faith and hit bottom, the characters in Shaky Town live on a dangerous faultline but remain unshakable in their connections to one another. Like Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio, John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, Katherine Ann Porter’s Ship of Fools, Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place, and Pat Barker’s Union Street, Shaky Town is the story of complicated, conflicted, and disparate characters bound together by place.

Book Synopsis Brilliant Disguises by : William Thornton
Download or read book Brilliant Disguises written by William Thornton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-11-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameron Leon is a newly-hired worker for the Forster Foundation, a world-wide charitable organization led by a reclusive billionaire. To get the job, Cameron has to join a church. However, Cameron, still mourning the recent death of his brother Peter, decides he will only pretend to get saved. In the process, he impersonates not only a Christian, but on occasion his brother. Cameron continues to receive tearful phone calls from Peters widow, Cecelia, who wants to hear her late husbands voice. Cameron, a born mimic like his brother, flawlessly impersonates him but feels the need for a personal kind of cleansing. In the end, Cameron discovers not only how many faces he has, but how many there are among the people around him. In the end, he finds he has been impersonating someone - or Someone - all along. According to Thornton, BRILLIANT DISGUISES grew from a longing to see the inner life of a Christian in a fictional setting. But the only way to make such a familiar setting appear unfamiliar to Christian readers was to have the story told by someone posing as one. Thornton says, Probably anyone who has attended an evangelical church, or any church for that matter, has a story of someone who volunteers for everything, is there for every service, has been a model of prayer and devotion for what seems like generations. It could be the Sunday School director or the lady who helps out in the kitchen or the organist. Then one Sunday, they come forward during the dedication and announce that theyve never felt they were saved. I wondered how that could happen, and I figured it would help if we were dealing with a character who was a born mimic.
Book Synopsis Legal Professionals Negotiating the Borders of Identity by : Jessie K. Finch
Download or read book Legal Professionals Negotiating the Borders of Identity written by Jessie K. Finch and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a controversial criminal immigration court procedure along the México-U.S. border called Operation Streamline as a rich setting to understand the identity management strategies employed by lawyers and judges. How do individuals negotiate situations in which their work-role identity is put in competition with their other social identities such as race/ethnicity, citizenship/generational status, and gender? By developing a new and integrative conceptualization of competing identity management, this book highlights the connection between micro level identities and macro level systems of structural racism, nationalism, and patriarchy. Through ethnographic observations and interviews, readers gain insight into the identity management strategies used by both Latino/a and non-Latino/a legal professionals of various citizenship/generational statuses and genders as they explain their participation in a program that represents many of the systemic inequalities that exist in the current U.S. criminal justice and immigration regimes. The book will appeal to scholars of sociology, social psychology, critical criminology, racial/ethnic studies, and migration studies. Additionally, with clear descriptions of terminology and theories referenced, students can learn not only about Operation Streamline as a specific criminal immigration proceeding that exemplifies structural inequalities but also about how those inequalities are reproduced—often reluctantly—by the legal professionals involved.

Book Synopsis Identity and Symbolic Interaction by : Richard T. Serpe
Download or read book Identity and Symbolic Interaction written by Richard T. Serpe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines identity theory’s centrality within social psychology and its foundations within structural symbolic interaction, highlighting its links not only to other prominent sociological subfields, but also to other theoretical perspectives within and beyond sociology. The book provides a synthetic overview outlining the intellectual lineage of identity theory within structural symbolic interactionism, and how the “Indiana School” of identity theory and research, associated especially with Sheldon Stryker, relates to other symbolic interactionist traditions within sociology. It also analyses the latest developments in response to the push to integrate identity theory, which initially focused on role identities, with the study of personal, group and social identities. Further, it discusses the relationship between identity theory and affect control theory, providing a sense of the many substantive topics within sociology beyond social psychology for which the study of identity has important, sometimes underappreciated implications. The book concludes with a chapter summarizing the interrelated lessons learned while also reflecting on remaining key questions and challenges for the future development of identity theory.
Download or read book Beauty of the Father written by Nilo Cruz and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beauty of the Father one of the American theater's most promising voices rings true and strong.'' - Lynn Jacobson, Variety ''Cruz conducts arias with his pen. He is a writer of ideas, who fills the stage with a kind of lush dramatic literature . . . Beauty of the Father brings to mind the playwright Maria Irene Fornes. Like his artistic forebear, Cruz recognizes the magic in the everyday. And he has found an astonishing language with which to describe it.'' - Hilton Als, The New Yorker In his latest play, Nilo Cruz asks; What will we sacrifice in the name of love? A young woman named Marina reunites with her father Emiliano in his artistic home, populated by his worldly wise female companion Paquita and the irresistible young Moroccan Karim, whom father and daughter both fall for. Set in the south of Spain, Beauty of the Father invokes the ghost of Federico Garca Lorca, both with its lyrical language and as a character in a white linen suit who appears to Emiliano as he paints. The play's rhythms are infused with the spirit of the Andalusians - a people who sing their sorrows in the cante jondo - as Cruz once again creates poetry to the tune of unrequited love.
