Welcome to New York, a city ruled by teens. After a mysterious Sickness wipes out the rest of the population, the young survivors assemble into tightly run tribes. Jefferson, the reluctant leader of the Washington Square tribe, and Donna, the girl he's secretly in love with, have carved out a precarious existence among the chaos. But when a fellow tribe member discovers a clue that may hold the cure for the Sickness, five teens set out on a life-altering road trip, exchanging gunfire with enemy gangs, escaping cults and militias, braving the wilds of the subway--all in order to save humankind. This first novel from acclaimed film writer/director Chris Weitz is the heart-stopping debut of an action-packed trilogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wally Baker is no ordinary girl. Living in her grandparents’ Brooklyn Heights brownstone, she doesn’t like dresses, needlepoint, or manners. Her love of Wonder Woman comics and ants makes her feel like a misfit—especially in the shadow of her dazzling but unstable mother, Stella. Acclaimed author Elizabeth Gaffney’s irresistible novel captures postwar Brooklyn through Wally’s eyes, opening on V-J day, as she grows up with the rest of America. Reeling from her own unexpected wartime tragedy and navigating an increasingly fraught landscape, Wally is forced to confront painful truths about the world—its sorrows, its prejudices, its conflicts, its limitations. But Wally also finds hope and strength in the unlikeliest places. With an unforgettable cast of characters, including the increasingly distant and distracted Stella; Loretta, the family’s black maid and Wally’s second mother; Ham, Loretta’s son, who shares Wally’s enthusiasm for ants and exploration; Rudy, Wally’s father, a naval officer, away serving in the Pacific; and Mr. Niederman, the family’s boarder, who never seems to answer Wally’s questions—and who she suspects may have something to hide—Elizabeth Gaffney crafts an immersive, beautifully realized novel about the truths that divide and the love that keeps us together. Praise for When the World Was Young “Elizabeth Gaffney’s wonderful, richly imagined novel When the World Was Young cheers the power and resilience of a society-bucking young woman.”—Vanity Fair “Gaffney’s heroines are brave and flawed (in a good way).”—Marie Claire “[A] smart, sensitive historical novel . . . driven by fast-paced storytelling.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Devastating and compelling.”—Elle “Richly textured . . . Gaffney transports us.”—Reader’s Digest “Lyrical.”—New York Post “Gaffney provides a lovingly told story of a time and a place and a house New Yorkers will recognize, if only in the mind’s eye.”—New York Daily News “A riveting coming-of-age story . . . a mesmerizing tale.”—Historical Novels Review “A charming and incisive tale . . . profound.”—Booklist “[A] layered, delicate novel.”—Publishers Weekly “A smart coming-of-age tale . . . lively . . . world-wise.”—Kirkus Reviews “This compelling family drama features an intriguing cast of characters who are well drawn and realistic, while also being emblematic of their time. Gaffney’s writing is graceful and leisurely paced, flavored with nostalgia.”—Library Journal “In this beautifully written novel—an honest and irresistible ride through post–World War II America in all its glory and its shame—Elizabeth Gaffney explores mothers and daughters, upstairs and downstairs, loveless marriages and passionate affairs, without ever losing her story or the fabulous characters that inhabit it.”—B. A. Shapiro, New York Times bestselling author of The Art Forger

Book excerpt: A Washington Post Bestseller "Beautifully written . . . sharply detailed recollections . . . compelling, both touching and funny...Holland writes with breezy elegance and a sly wit."-The New York Times Book Review The author deemed "a national treasure" finally tells her own story, with this sharp and atmospheric memoir of a postwar American childhood. Barbara Holland finally brings her wit and wisdom to the one subject her fans have been clamoring for for years: herself. When All the World Was Young is Holland's memoir of growing up in Washington, D.C. during the 1940s and 50s, and is a deliciously subversive, sensitive journey into her past. Mixing politics with personal meditations on fatherhood, mothers and their duties, and "the long dark night of junior high school," Holland gives readers a unique and sharp-eyed look at history as well as hard-earned insight into her own life. A shy, awkward girl with an overbearing stepfather and a bookworm mother, Holland surprises everyone by growing up into the confident, brainy, successful writer she is today. Tough, funny, and nostalgic yet unsentimental, When All the World Was Young is a true pleasure to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book came from experiences I have gone through in my Christian walk. I became a Christian in 1993 and soon enough I came to know that if I were to enjoy my Christian life, I had to renew my mind with the Word of God. I also came to realize that, the environment that I grew up in and the developed mind set over the years, were directing how I related to God and His Word. To a larger extent, this was always in conflict with the Word of God. I would get frustrated when my prayers were not answered how and when I wanted them to. I would begin to ask myself questions such as; "Is God punishing me for something? Did God really hear my prayers? How did so and so receive what I have been asking for months?" But as I continued to study and mature in the Word of God, things became clearer. Sometimes a believer will struggle with questions, but fear to ask them, fearing being judged or presuming they are of little or no faith. Throughout my ministry, I have dedicated myself to encouraging people to overcome their fears in order to reach their God given potential. I believe that all of us are capable of living a full life, but misinterpretation of what is a full life creates frustration. This book is a compass to the person who is trying to figure out where their Christian life is and where it is heading. I present truths in this book in a simple and understandable language without diluting the intended message. I am currently the founding Pastor at God Our Rock International Church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucretius’ philosophical epic De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things) is a lengthy didactic and narrative celebration of the universe and, in particular, the world of nature and creation in which humanity finds its abode. This earliest surviving full scale epic poem from ancient Rome was of immense influence and significance to the development of the Latin epic tradition, and continues to challenge and haunt its readers to the present day. A Reading of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura offers a comprehensive commentary on this great work of Roman poetry and philosophy. Lee Fratantuono reveals Lucretius to be a poet with deep and abiding interest in the nature of the Roman identity as the children of both Venus (through Aeneas) and Mars (through Romulus); the consequences (both positive and negative) of descent from the immortal powers of love and war are explored in vivid epic narrative, as the poet progresses from his invocation to the mother of the children of Aeneas through to the burning funeral pyres of the plague at Athens. Lucretius’ epic offers the possibility of serenity and peaceful reflection on the mysteries of the nature of the world, even as it shatters any hope of immortality through its bleak vision of post mortem oblivion. And in the process of defining what it means both to be human and Roman, Lucretius offers a horrifying vision of the perils of excessive devotion both to the gods and our fellow men, a commentary on the nature of pietas that would serve as a warning for Virgil in his later depiction of the Trojan Aeneas.

This despite the words of 1 Peter 3:15: "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." Thankfully, scholars like Henry Morris have seen fit to provide us with good answers for questions posed by Bible critics...and by multitudes of Christians, for Christ himself has provided us with many infallible proofs (Acts 1:2-3). Christians will be strengthened with these topics: Problems in verbal inspirationFulfillment of prophecyThe structure of ScriptureAlleged Bible contradictionsThe Bible and scienceThe Bible and ancient historyThe unique birth of Christ
