Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English is the language of science today. No matter which languages you know, if you want your work seen, studied, and cited, you need to publish in English. But that hasn’t always been the case. Though there was a time when Latin dominated the field, for centuries science has been a polyglot enterprise, conducted in a number of languages whose importance waxed and waned over time—until the rise of English in the twentieth century. So how did we get from there to here? How did French, German, Latin, Russian, and even Esperanto give way to English? And what can we reconstruct of the experience of doing science in the polyglot past? With Scientific Babel, Michael D. Gordin resurrects that lost world, in part through an ingenious mechanism: the pages of his highly readable narrative account teem with footnotes—not offering background information, but presenting quoted material in its original language. The result is stunning: as we read about the rise and fall of languages, driven by politics, war, economics, and institutions, we actually see it happen in the ever-changing web of multilingual examples. The history of science, and of English as its dominant language, comes to life, and brings with it a new understanding not only of the frictions generated by a scientific community that spoke in many often mutually unintelligible voices, but also of the possibilities of the polyglot, and the losses that the dominance of English entails. Few historians of science write as well as Gordin, and Scientific Babel reveals his incredible command of the literature, language, and intellectual essence of science past and present. No reader who takes this linguistic journey with him will be disappointed.

Book excerpt: "Joe Dator makes me laugh. Everybody loves to look behind the scenes and his new book shows the secrets, inspirations, heartaches, and triumphs of a life in cartoons. Christopher Guest and I have a collection of original cartoons, and we love our Joe Dator!" —Jamie Lee Curtis From inspiration to conception and all the trials in-between. Inked is a collection of cartoons from one of the New Yorker’s most beloved cartoonists. Filled with more than 150 of Dator’s single-panel cartoons, this lively, quick-witted book betrays a deadpan sense of humor. But Inked is more than a book of cartoons. Dator also dives into the creative process, offering bonus commentary on how ideas have come to fruition, how one idea has led to another, and the various attempts to get an idea right. Along the way, he shows how a spark of imagination has turned into a laugh-out-loud moment with only a single image and caption, and how other attempts have found themselves on the cutting-room floor.

Book excerpt: FrameShifting is a unique user-centered guide to collaborating with others that combines structure and creativity. The FrameShifting methodology draws upon Alison Heiser's extensive experience as an executive and consultant working with leaders and teams in blue chip organizations including P&G, LensCrafters, Michelin, Accenture, Microsoft, BASF, Steelcase and many others. FrameShifting breaks new ground with the concept of Frame Archetypes. We profile the FrameBuilder, FrameSeeker, FrameMaster and FreeRadical using stories, illustrations, and real-life examples to describe their skills, Achilles' heels, and opportunities for growth. All over the world teams are working together to solve challenges they've never seen before. And far too often, an endless series of meetings leave people frustrated and with little to show for their efforts. FrameShifting is a skill that can be learned, and with practice it will step change how leaders and teams collaborate to drive innovative problem-solving in any organization. From the Foreword: "What Alison and Mary have done is to illuminate the discipline of problem framing and using frameworks effectively, making what has historically been more of an art into a learnable science that consultants of all flavors can use to increase the impact of their work with clients. However, this book is not just for consultants. It's for any businessperson who wants to learn to solve gnarly problems - and, importantly, to solve the right problems - with greater insight and rigor. And, importantly, it's for collaborators who want to engage others in the exploration and solving of tough problems. FrameShifting is as much a collaboration approach as it is a problem-solving approach."-Melissa Quinn, Innovation Advisor and Coach, former COO and Managing Director, Doblin, Deloitte Consulting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feggo is the nom de plume of Felipe Galindo G mez, an award-winning Mexican artist who since 1983 has lived and worked in New York City. He creates humorous art in a variety of media, including cartoons, illustrations, animations, fine art, and public art. He is the creator of Manhatitlan (Jorge Pinto Books, 2010) which celebrates the intertwining of Mexican and American cultures in New York through drawings and animations. His work is exhibited extensively, and his cartoons appear in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Reader's Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Mad, Nickelodeon, Inx, Barron's and in British publications such as Private Eye, Oldie, The Spectator, Prospect, as well as many others worldwide. Feggo by Marissa Acocella Marchetto "Felipe's work is not only good humored but good hearted and guaranteed to lift your spirits!" -Gahan Wilson "Felipe's cartoon art is absolutely unique and among the most creative I have seen anywhwere. The humor in his drawings is most often conveyed without falling back on the crutch of words or captions. I envy him that ability, because, as a cartoonist myself, I know that he has chosen the most difficult path in this art form and has triumphed."-Jack Ziegler "Ordinarily I don't use F-words, but Feggo is a Fabulously Funny Fellow."-Sam Gross "It is a rare cartoonist who appeals to such diverse readerships as the Reader's Digest, Barron's, The New Yorker and Nickelodeon, to name just a few of the magazines where the widely published Felipe Galindo's cartoons can be found. As cartoon editor of The New Yorker I especially enjoy Felipe's carefully constructed sight gags, whose wordless humor unites all demographics in laughter." -Bob Mankoff

Book excerpt: -A memoir- I have cancer! Now what? Living on the beautiful Caribbean island of Curaçao, at twenty-seven years old, that was the question I had to ask myself. Out of the blue, I was hit with a life-changing diagnosis and as my "normal" life stood still, I hopped on the scariest roller coaster of my life. I invite you to join me on this ride and read inside my mind. The mind of an optimist-the glass-half-full-of-sarcasm kind. While the experience was bumpy and lumpy, it was also filled with epiphanies, cancer perks, friendship, family, gratitude, and hope. So, at definite risk of sounding like a Hallmark card, this is not a story of tragedy, instead it is one of triumph. This is a book about learning the hard life lessons and coming out of it more positive, empowered, and resilient than before. Better and balder* through it all.*okay maybe that was just me.

The cozy existence she shares with her grandmother, an eccentric retired actress known to all as Madam, has been shattered: there's no post, no telephone, no radio - and an American warship sits in the harbor. As the two women piece together clues about the 'friendly' military occupation on their doorstep, family, friends and neighbours gather round to protect their heritage. In this chilling novel of the future, Daphne du Maurier explores the implications of a political, economic and military alliance between Britain and the United States. "A diverse and engrossing cast of characters...provocative, diverting."-Chicago Tribune
