Book excerpt: Critical Plays is the systematic study of one (fictional) classroom culture populated by six students and their two professors, imaginatively conceived from interviews, experience, observation and thematic analysis, and shaped into performance text. This play-as-research-text aims to provide an encounter both creative and scholarly for readers. The characters who populate it are drawn from the authors’ lived experiences as researchers, teachers, and performance makers. The characters are drawn from the fields of health, performance studies, education and leadership studies to remind readers of the political, social and scholarly power of creative research approaches. The text also attests to the potential of integrating emotion and relationality in the research space. This text is a must-read for qualitative researchers and students of health sciences, communications, interdisciplinary ethnography, rhetoric, education, sociology, drama and theatre arts. Relevant to the lives of an emerging generation of researchers and students, this text highlights new methodological pathways that are open to them as they begin their own scholarly undertakings in a rapidly-evolving global research landscape. It also poses serious questions about education, identity and creativity that readers can reflect on. Written with humor and passion, students will enjoy reading excerpts aloud in class, or on their own. This play can be read or performed purely for pleasure, or used as a class text in courses that address qualitative research methods, performance studies, education, teacher training, pedagogy and curriculum, arts-informed inquiry and research ethics. Anne Harris, PhD is a playwright and scholar who addresses themes of diversity, creativity and gender in her work. Chris Sinclair is Head of drama education at the University of Melbourne. She is also a freelance community artist who draws on research in her arts practice and the arts in her research.

Boston's Kurt Jennings feels no such pressure. Raised by unassuming parents, the habitual womanizer looks forward to creating his own legacy; he's the protégé of a right-wing talk show host. Mindy and Kurt's paths would likely never cross, but when Mindy researches three untimely deaths during the election season? Mindy thinks American companies are conspiring to kill Americans?liberal Americans, in particular. Thinking she's a target, she reluctantly tells Kurt seeking his help to investigate further. He agrees to help, influenced in no small part by Mindy's good looks. But there's something Kurt should have considered more carefully: the other person Mindy confided in wound up dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Mackenzie was the first European to complete a land crossing of the continent of America north of Mexico, preceding the famous Lewis and Clark expedition by twelve years. In his journals he details two separate voyages: one up what is now known as the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Ocean in 1789, and another to what is now Bella Coola on the Pacific Ocean in 1792 and 1793. Both journals provide a detailed description of the many difficulties in navigating and traveling in a country that had yet to be mapped. Having to rely on Native guides and rumors, and enduring hardships that almost beggar belief, Mackenzie and his team were able to achieve their objective of finding an east to west land crossing through the Rocky Mountains and to the Pacific Ocean. Although his route didn’t prove as practical as routes found by later explorers, Mackenzie has cemented himself as a key explorer of Western Canada. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Mary Jess Parker, better-known as Jess as she’s no Mary, married a rich man for his money, cheated on him several times with far too many men to count, including their dishwasher, for two years. When the rich man finds out, Jess isn’t just kicked out of the house but is forced to drink a cup of oil due to her husband’s family using something similar to that during their railroad construction. However, this oil isn’t normal and makes her invisible from all pretty faces, and only seen by those that feel as lonely and invisible as her husband, who she can only divorce if she breaks the curse. This broken girl is given two and a half years to find love, the real, genuine kind, if she wants to be seen by everyone again. Jess soon begins to learn that no one has ever truly seen her before until she meets a man from her past, a train conductor that almost hits her with his train, Jaxson Smith. He’s just as much of a mess as she remembered, due to his wife’s passing and now being a single dad as he had a daughter with another woman, who isn’t in the picture. Love can be a dangerous battlefield with two very broken people, full of beauty and beasts within. When two very broken people manage to build each other back up and break the curse, can their love survive those that don’t really see them as they see each other or will it die like the fallen rose petals in the beloved fairytale?

Book excerpt: What if you discovered that Kurt Cobain was not only alive, but might be your real father? This nuanced and bittersweet YA debut will keep you guessing until the end. “Utterly gorgeous. Mesmerizing. Hypnotic. I love this book.” —Jennifer Niven, New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places Nico Cavan has been adrift since her mother vanished when she was four—maternal abandonment isn’t exactly something you can just get over. Staying invisible at school is how she copes—that and listening to alt music and summoning spirits on the Ouija board with her best friend and coconspirator in sarcasm, Obe. But when a chance discovery opens a window onto her mom’s wild past, it sparks an idea in her brain that takes hold and won’t let go. On a ferry departing Seattle, Nico encounters a slight blond guy with piercing blue eyes wearing a hooded jacket. Something in her heart tells her that this feeling she has might actually be the truth, so she follows him to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. When she is stranded there by a winter storm, fear and darkness collide, and the only one who can save Nico might just be herself.
