Book excerpt: The main theme of the ECIT conferences is Iteration Theory, on the borderline between Dynamics and Functional Equations. The aim is to foster symbiosis between mainstream dynamics and iteration theory treated in the style of functional equations theory. The following topics are focused: turbulence and iteration, characterization of chaos, kneading theory, symbolic dynamics, bifurcation, periods of maps, topological dynamics, discrete retarded dynamical systems, cellular automata as dynamical systems, iterative roots of formal power series, iterative roots of polynomials, phantom iterative roots, iterative groups and semigroups, families of commuting functions, algebraic aspects of iteration theory and functional equations.

Book excerpt: These proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Difference Equations and Applications cover a number of different aspects of difference equations and discrete dynamical systems, as well as the interplay between difference equations and dynamical systems. The conference was organized by the Department of Mathematics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) under the auspices of the International Society of Difference Equations (ISDE) and held in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) in July 2012. Its purpose was to bring together experts and novices in these fields to discuss the latest developments. The book gathers contributions in the field of combinatorial and topological dynamics, complex dynamics, applications of difference equations to biology, chaotic linear dynamics, economic dynamics and control and asymptotic behavior, and periodicity of difference equations. As such it is of interest to researchers and scientists engaged in the theory and applications of difference equations and discrete dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Means in Mathematical Analysis addresses developments in global analysis, non-linear analysis, and the many problems of associated fields, including dynamical systems, ergodic theory, combinatorics, differential equations, approximation theory, analytic inequalities, functional equations and probability theory. The series comprises highly specialized research monographs written by eminent scientists, handbooks and selected multi-contributor reference works (edited volumes), bringing together an extensive body of information. It deals with the fundamental interplay of nonlinear analysis with other headline domains, particularly geometry and analytic number theory, within the mathematical sciences. - Reviews double sequences defined with two arbitrary means, aiding digestion, analysis and prospective research - Provides exact solutions on bounds, inequalities and approximations for researchers interrogating means across physical and statistical problems - Places the current state of means in mathematical analysis alongside its storied and impressive history

Book excerpt: This volume examines current research in mechanics and its applications to various disciplines, with a particular focus on fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The topics have been chosen in commemoration of Dr. Bong Jae Chung and with respect to his wide range of research interests. This volume stands apart because of this diversity of interests, featuring an interdisciplinary and in-depth analysis of FSI that is difficult to find conveniently collected elsewhere in the literature. Contributors include mathematicians, physicists, mechanical and biomechanical engineers, and psychologists. This volume is structured into four thematic areas in order to increase its accessibility: theory, computations, experiments, and applications. Recent Advances in Mechanics and Fluid-Structure Interaction with Applications will appeal to established researchers as well as postdocs and graduate students interested in this active area of research.

Book excerpt: The journal aequationes mathematicae publishes papers in pure and applied mathematics and, in particular, articles on functional equations, combinatorics and dynamical systems. Its 50th volume appears in 1995. To mark this occasion, we are publishing in book form a repre sentative collection of outstanding survey papers assembled for our anniversary issue of aequationes mathematicae. The articles by Quackenbush, Targonski and Moszner discuss composition of functions from different points of view: universal algebra, dynamical systems (iteration) and functional equa tions. The Ono-Robbins-Wahl and the Vince papers, on number theory and tiles, respectively, are thematically linked by lattices. Combinatorics, in turn, links the Vince paper with that of Tutte, whose subject is chromatic sums, its tools differential and functional equations. The Paganoni-Ratz and the Forti papers deal with conditional functional equations and with the related topic of stability. Applications to the social and behavioral sciences, in particular to aggregation (and some theory) are presented in the paper by J. Aczel. The aim of the collection is to survey selected fields of current interest. We trust that it will be useful and informative for researchers, teachers, graduate and advanced undergraduate stu dents of mathematics, and for those interested in applications in related fields. lanDs Aczel Aequationes Mathematicae 50 (1995) 1 0001-9054/95/020001-01 $1.50 + 0.20/0 University of Waterloo © 1995 Birkhiiuser Verlag, Basel Editorial Volume 50 of Aequationes Mathematicae This is the fiftieth volume of aequationes mathematicae. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't !hat they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal 0/ Fa/her 'The Hermit Oad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van GuJik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fie1ds does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "complete1y integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing c1assification schemes. They draw upon wide1y different sections of mathematics.

Book excerpt: Lectures on NX(p) deals with the question on how NX(p), the number of solutions of mod p congruences, varies with p when the family (X) of polynomial equations is fixed. While such a general question cannot have a complete answer, it offers a good occasion for reviewing various techniques in l-adic cohomology and group representations, presented in
