Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria-Hungary and Germany I Have Stated, I think, several times in this book why the history of Italy is very hard to write. I need not repeat my reasons here. It had been my intention to say to my large circle of readers (who seem almost my personal friends) that "Italy" would be the last volume in this Nineteenth Century series. Very probably it may be so. Yet, when I consider how picturesque a subject Spain would be, with its war of the Constitution; its Carlist struggles; the sad history of the Spanish marriages, and their consequences; King Amadeo; Alfonso XII. and his sweet wife, Mercedes; and the Regency of Queen Christina; also how acceptable some intelligible account might be of the connection of Spain with Cuban affairs (if such an account in the next twelve months should be procurable), I am tempted to undertake it. It may seem to some that the chapters on Austria-Hungary and Germany have very slight connection with the story of Italy, yet I think it needs them. Without some brief account of contemporary events in those countries, my narrative would look to me like an unfinished seam left with a "ragged edge." For without such knowledge no one can understand, or begin to understand, the significance of the forces that have made it, the vastness of the issues involved, the nature of what is indisputably one of the gravest crises in the history of mankind. No citizen of a free country who takes his citizenship seriously, who considers himself responsible, to the full extent of his personal influence, for the character and conduct of his government, can, without the crudest self-stultification, admit that he knows nothing and cares nothing about the history of Europe._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Old Regime in Europe_x000D_ The Old Regime in France_x000D_ Beginnings of the Revolution_x000D_ The Making of the Constitution_x000D_ The Legislative Assembly_x000D_ The Convention_x000D_ The Directory_x000D_ The Consulate_x000D_ The Early Years of the Empire_x000D_ The Empire at Its Height_x000D_ The Decline and Fall of Napoleon_x000D_ The Congresses_x000D_ France Under the Restoration_x000D_ Revolutions Beyond France_x000D_ The Reign of Louis Philippe_x000D_ Central Europe in Revolt_x000D_ The Second French Republic and the Founding of the Second Empire_x000D_ The Making of the Kingdom of Italy_x000D_ The Unification of Germany_x000D_ The Second Empire and the Franco-Prussian War_x000D_ The German Empire_x000D_ France Under the Third Republic_x000D_ The Kingdom of Italy Since 1870_x000D_ Austria-Hungary Since 1848_x000D_ England From 1815 to 1868_x000D_ England Since 1868_x000D_ The British Empire_x000D_ The Partition of Africa_x000D_ Spain and Portugal_x000D_ Holland and Belgium Since 1830_x000D_ Switzerland_x000D_ The Scandinavian States_x000D_ The Disruption of the Ottoman Empire and the Rise of the Balkan States_x000D_ Russia to the War With Japan_x000D_ The Far East_x000D_ Russia Since the 1905 War With Japan_x000D_ The Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913_x000D_ The European War_x000D_ Making the Peace

Book excerpt: The conquest of Serbia was only one of the goals of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the First World War; beyond this lay the desire to control much of South-East Europe. Employing previously unseen sources, Marvin Fried provides the first complete analysis of the Monarchy's war aims in the Balkans and tells the story of its imperialist ambitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Nationalizing Empires challenge the dichotomy between empire and nation state that for decades has dominated historiography. The authors center their attention on nation-building in the imperial core and maintain that the nineteenth century, rather than the age of nation-states, was the age of empires and nationalism. They identify a number of instances where nation building projects in the imperial metropolis aimed at the preservation and extension of empires rather than at their dissolution or the transformation of entire empires into nation states. Such observations have until recently largely escaped theoretical reflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important critical study of the history of public art museums in Austria-Hungary explores their place in the wider history of European museums and collecting, their role as public institutions, and their involvement in the complex cultural politics of the Habsburg Empire. Focusing on institutions in Vienna, Cracow, Prague, Zagreb, and Budapest, The Museum Age in Austria-Hungary traces the evolution of museum culture over the long nineteenth century, from the 1784 installation of imperial art collections in the Belvedere Palace (as a gallery open to the public) to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary after the First World War. Drawing on source materials from across the empire, the authors reveal how the rise of museums and display was connected to growing tensions between the efforts of Viennese authorities to promote a cosmopolitan and multinational social, political, and cultural identity, on the one hand, and, on the other, the rights of national groups and cultures to self-expression. They demonstrate the ways in which museum collecting policies, practices of display, and architecture engaged with these political agendas and how museums reflected and enabled shifting forms of civic identity, emerging forms of professional practice, the production of knowledge, and the changing composition of the public sphere. Original in its approach and sweeping in scope, this fascinating study of the museum age of Austria-Hungary will be welcomed by students and scholars interested in the cultural and art history of Central Europe.
