Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baroque period was crucial for the development of art theory and the advancement of the artistic academy. This collection of primary sources brings this important period to life with significant documents and texts. It conveniently assembles major texts, which are otherwise available only in scattered publications. The lives of leading artists--Caravaggio, El Greco, among others---are discussed by their contemporaries, while Bellori, Galileo, Pascoli, and others write on art theory and practice. The documents provide fascinating glimpses of the period's artistic self-image.

Book excerpt: Two of the most important Spanish sculptors of the sixteenth century and their work in Naples can be found here together in an opulent art book. During the period between 1513 and 1518, Bartolome Ordonez and Diego de Siloe from Burgos in Castile made the southern Italian city blossom into one of the most important European centres of marble sculpture. Ordonez and de Siloe were influenced in their art by the work of Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, and continued to develop their own style: poetical and expressive, it was modelled on the Italian Renaissance mixed with borrowings from Antiquity, but without giving up the Naturalism typical of the Iberian peninsula. As masters of a variety of techniques they found in Naples that the unique marble from Carrara provided a fertile environment for their creative work. Their activities here provided the decisive impetus for the continued development of artistic taste towards the High Renaissance and laid the foundation stone for the Neapolitan School with its main representatives Girolamo Santacroce and Giovanni da Nola. Paul Getty Museum’s collection of European sculpture featured in this volume ranges in date from the late fifteenth century to the very early twentieth and includes a wide variety of media: marble, bronze, alabaster, terracotta, plaster, wood, ivory, and gold. The earliest sculpture represented is the mysterious Saint Cyricus by Francesco Laurana; the latest is a shield-like portrait of Medusa by the eccentric Italian sculptor Vincenzo Gemito. Among the more than forty works included in this handsomely illustrated volume are sculptures by Antico (Bust of a Young Man); Cellini (a Satyr designed for Fontainebleau); Giambologna (a Female Figure that may represent Venus); Bernini (Boy with a Dragon); and Carpeaux (Bust of Jean-Léon Gérôme). Well represented here is the Museum’s splendid collection of Mannerist and early Baroque bronzes, including such masterpieces as Johann Gregor van der Schardt’s Mercury and two superb works by Adriaen de Vries: Juggling Man and Rearing Horse. These works are indicative of the extraordinary quality of the J. Paul Getty Museum’s collection of post-Classical European sculpture.
