A week had almost passed since the boat had sailed from Vancouver, and the extremely bad weather encountered until this afternoon had prevented all but the most hardened good sailors from penetrating from below. Now, however, the wind and sea had somewhat abated, the first ray of sun had brought the storm-tossed and sea-sick from their berths, and the broad decks were soon swarming with passengers of both sexes, whose faces and general demeanour expressed entire satisfaction at their restored liberty. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. It was written in English and published by a company in Connecticut, U.S.A. The description of just a common boy's daily life in a countryside contributed to cross-cultural understanding between the two countries at an early stage after the end of the Japanese isolation policy. His book sold well that he could pay for education with this publication to become a qualified doctor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quiet revolution in knowledge separated the early modern period in Japan from all previous time. After 1600, self-appointed investigators used the model of the land and cartographic surveys of the newly unified state to observe and order subjects such as agronomy, medicine, gastronomy, commerce, travel, and entertainment. They subsequently circulated their findings through a variety of commercially printed texts: maps, gazetteers, family encyclopedias, urban directories, travel guides, official personnel rosters, and instruction manuals for everything from farming to lovemaking. In this original and gracefully written book, Mary Elizabeth Berry considers the social processes that drove the information explosion of the 1600s. Inviting readers to examine the contours and meanings of this transformation, Berry provides a fascinating account of the conversion of the public from an object of state surveillance into a subject of self-knowledge. Japan in Print shows how, as investigators collected and disseminated richly diverse data, they came to presume in their audience a standard of cultural literacy that changed anonymous consumers into an "us" bound by common frames of reference. This shared space of knowledge made society visible to itself and in the process subverted notions of status hierarchy. Berry demonstrates that the new public texts projected a national collectivity characterized by universal access to markets, mobility, sociability, and self-fashioning.

Another man appears, confesses to the same crime, but is acquitted despite his confession. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands: Japan F AR away from our land, on the other side of the world, lies a group of islands which form the kingdom of 'japan. The word Japan means the Land of the Rising Sun, and it is certainly a good name for a country of the Far East, the land of sunrise. The ag of Japan, too, is painted with a rising sun which 'sheds its beams on every hand, and this ag is now for ever famous, so great and wonderful have been the victories in which it has been borne triumphant over Russian arms. In some ways the Japanese are fond of comparing themselves with their English friends and allies. They point out that Japan is a cluster of islands o the coast of Asia, as Britain is a cluster of islands of? The coast of Europe. They have proved themselves, like the English, brave and clever on the sea, while their troops have fought as nobly as British soldiers on the land. Theyare fond of calling themselves the English of the East, and say that their land is the Britain of the Pacific. The rise of Japan in becoming one of the Great Powers of the world has been very sudden and wonder ful. Fifty years ago Japan lay hidden from the World she forbade strangers to visit the country, and very little was known of her people and her customs. Her navy then consisted of a few wooden junks; to-day she has a eet of splendid ironclads, handled by men who know their duties as well as English seamen. Her army consisted of troops armed with two swords and carrying bows and arrows to-day her troops are the admiration of the world, armed with the most modern weapons, and, as foes, to be dreaded by the most powerful nations. Fifty years ago Japan was in the purely feudal stage. Her great native Princes were called Daimios. Each had a strong castle and a private army of his own. There were ceaseless feuds between these Princes and constant fighting between their armies of samurai, as their followers were called. Japan was like England at the time of our War of the Roses: family quarrels were fought out in pitched battle. All that has now gone. The Daimios have become private gentlemen the armies of samurai have been disbanded, and Japan is ruled and managed just like a European country, with judges, and policemen, and law-courts, after the model of Western lands.
