The warm feeling of pleasure when a dog greets us or pulls their owner inside the house is priceless. At times I’ve felt like I should be paying the owners because of the joy and interest their pets give us.” When Graham Matthews began walking Nero, a trainee guide dog, he had no idea how life-changing this seemingly simple job would be. Once Nero passed on to his advanced training, the hole he left behind in Graham’s life was immense, and so Graham became a dog carer, offering a home from home to a wide range of canines – from rumbustious rescue dogs to languid labradors. “When Nero left for his advance training, I was so upset that I never took on another guide dog. When you’ve been up all night with the dog throwing up at both ends, cleaning up and lying on the floor, saying, Daddy wishes he could do it for you, well that’s not a dog, but a family member. Nero’s legacy lasted long after he had gone and it was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world.” It all Started with a Dog is a simple tale of dog walking experiences which are both funny and sad. Aimed at all dog lovers, it conveys the love and affection that passes between man and dog and shows that a dog really is a man’s best friend.

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades or so, the New Danish Cinema has established itself as an important source of cinematic renewal and innovation, and as a model for how small, minor or peripheral cinemas can survive in an industry dominated by Global Hollywood. Following in the footsteps of critically-acclaimed The Danish Directors (also published by Intellect), The Danish Directors 2 provides a practitioner’s perspective on the social, cultural, and economic milieus in which Danish film-makers have been able to develop their practice, and to thrive. With insider information about the making, marketing and distribution of award-winning films, and interviews with seminal directors such as Anders Thomas Jensen, Annette K. Olesen, and Lone Scherfig, The Danish Directors 2 allows readers entry into what might seem to be a forbidding body of work. The editors are knowledgeable and sensitive interrogators, and their appreciation of the specific qualities of each director’s work elicits thoughtful replies. This volume will appeal to students, scholars, and cinephiles alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This incendiary debut of linked stories narrates the everyday lives of Soweto residents, from the early years of apartheid to its dissolution and beyond. Set in Soweto, the urban heartbeat of South Africa, Innards tells the intimate stories of everyday black folks processing the savagery of apartheid with grit, wit, and their own distinctive bewildering humor. Rich with the thrilling textures of township language and life, it braids the voices and perspectives of an indelible cast of characters into a breathtaking collection flush with forgiveness, rage, ugliness, and beauty. Meet a fake PhD and ex-freedom fighter who remains unbothered by his own duplicity, a girl who goes mute after stumbling upon a burning body, twin siblings nursing a scorching feud, and a woman unraveling under the weight of a brutal encounter with the police. At the heart of these stories about deceit and ambition, appalling violence, familial turmoil, and love is South Africa’s history of slavery, colonization, and apartheid. Like many Americans today, Innards’ characters must navigate the shadows of the recent past alongside the uncertain opportunities of the promised land. Full to bursting with life, in all its complexities and vagaries, Innards is an uncompromising depiction of black South Africa. Visceral and tender, it heralds the arrival of a major new voice in contemporary fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a deadly code of conduct that operates beyond the boundaries of the everyday. It's a world where anger, strength, and terrifying ferocity must be controlled with total precision and perfect timing. It is an art known to only a few. In this unique project, Kate Kray has met such men and talked to them on their own ground. They have opened up to her, told her their stories--the hunger and poverty they have endured as kids with crime and violence on every street corner, a world where it's a thin line between survival and the cold slab in the city mortuary. With integrated photographs, the portraits of these men reveal not only their awesome and terrifying presence, their power and brutal strength, but their underlying humanity and dignity too. The result of this collaboration is a revelation--portraits in words and pictures of tough guys who are smooth, loaded, and hard as rock. Men who have gone to the brink, and have survived to turn their lives around to tell their tale.

Book excerpt: What if we loved ourselves more than we could imagine? We are told to love ourselves, but we don't know how or even why. What if we learned actual techniques that helped us love ourselves and align our energy with our Higher Self and the Universe for a more joyous life? It’s possible, and it just takes willingness and practice. When we learn and use real tools, we are better able to surf the waves of life, and meet life with grace. When we learn how we are resisting loving ourselves and learn how to allow the love we are to flow through us, we utilize the buoyant, loving energy of the Universe to flow more smoothly and joyously through life. Everything is energy, including us! When our energy is in balance and flows smoothly, we feel harmonious, peaceful, and aligned with our true nature, our Higher Self, part of the Universe. This is our natural state. Daily life often seems to interrupt our connection with our true state of being. By working with our energy and metaphysical principles, we can remember who we really are; we realign with our true self, which is pure Love, and experience the ease, peace, and joy that results. Metaphysics is about using the energy we are beyond our body in a practical way while we are in this body. By understanding that we are both human and Divine and having compassion for how challenging it is to live in this world, we begin to understand Love, the most powerful force in the Universe. This is not mysterious; this is very real and very available to each of us. The keys to healing are Love and Willingness. The keys are yours for the taking.

Book excerpt: Journey behind enemy lines in Second World War Europe with the The Spy Masters Thrillers. Includes all four books in the series; The Best of Our Spies, The Swiss Spy, Vienna Spies and The Berlin Spies. The Best of Our Spies: In the Pas de Calais, Nathalie Mercier, a young British Special Operations Executive secret agent working with the French Resistance, disappears. In London, her husband Owen Quinn, an officer with Royal Navy Intelligence, discovers the truth about her role in the Allies’ sophisticated deception at the heart of D-Day. Appalled but determined, Quinn sets off on a perilous hunt through France in search of his wife. Aided by the Resistance in his search, he makes good progress. But, caught up by the bitterness of the war and its insatiable appetite for revenge, he risks total destruction... The Swiss Spy: All spies have secrets, but Henry Hunter has more than most. After he is stopped by British Intelligence at Croydon airport on the eve of the Second World War, he discovers one more devastating than any before. From Switzerland he embarks on a series of increasingly perilous missions into Nazi Germany. In March, 1941, in Berlin, haunted by a dark episode from his past, he makes a fateful decision, resulting in a dramatic journey to the Swiss frontier and a shocking encounter... Vienna Spies: With the end of the Second World War in sight, the Allies begin to divide up the spoils and it proves to be a dangerous game. The British have become aware that, contrary to prior agreements, the Soviet Union is intent on controlling Austria once the war ends. Major Edgar is tasked with the job of establishing an espionage unit in Vienna to monitor the situation. He sends in two agents – Rolf Eder and Katharina Hoch – to track down Austria's most respected politician and bring him over to the British cause. But the feared Soviet spy Viktor Krasotkin is already in the war-torn city, embarking on exactly the same mission... The Berlin Spies: Berlin, 1945. SS recruits gather east of the city for an audacious yet ill-fated mission to bring about a Fourth Reich. Three decades later, a young British diplomat in East Berlin is compromised after falling into a honey-trap. He contacts Major Edgar, a veteran British spymaster, who is drawn into an unlikely alliance with his old adversary, Viktor Krasotkin. Soon they are plunged into a world of Nazi war criminals and double agents. With nobody to trust, they must rely on each other. But as Cold War tensions rise, the cracks begin to show. A masterclass in espionage fiction, these tense, tightly plotted novels are perfect for fans of John le Carré, Len Deighton and Jack Higgins.
