Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. "Powerful." --USA Today "Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault." --Washington Post "Superb, smart, and succinct." --Forbes

Book excerpt: As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real estate day trading is using the Internet to buy and sell houses without leaving home. In many cases, the investor closes on a house and resells it the same day. Readers will learn the author's system for how to buy and sell 5-10 houses a month in today's market, using the Internet, phone, fax, and email to analyze, research, and find the properties, buyers, and others needed for the transaction. Author Larry Goins has personally done deals in nine different states and has students in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Israel, the Philippines, and Denmark. Day trading can be used for wholesaling properties to other investors, retailing, lease options, short sales, foreclosure investing, etc. The basic steps are: Search online for potential properties to make offers on, using specific techniques for finding the right ones. Once an offer is accepted, usually within 1-2 weeks, put it on paper using clauses included in the book, and get the property inspected by a rehab contractor to get a free estimate of how much the repairs will cost. This is done by finding reputable contractors online and through referrals from realtors and through autoresponders. Order an appraisal. Sell it fast! Using the buyers list you have built on the internet through email marketing groups, social networking sites, blogs, free classified sites, bank-owned property sites, and more, send an email with the details of the property and instructions on how they can get the property under contract. Usually within two hours several potential buyers will reply. Set up a closing to buy it and to sell it on the same day; closings are about 30 minutes apart. By it at 10:00 and sell it at 10:30, for example. There are many ways to fund and close on the property. The book will contain step-by-step, easy processes for assignments, options, flex options, simultaneous closings, using hard money, private money, cash partners, and credit partners, none of which will require an investor's own cash or credit. With praise from New York Times Bestselling Author Dr. Albert Lowery, Robert Shemin, Frank McKinney and foreword by Michael E. Gerber. Larry Goins (Lake Wylie, SC; www.larrygoins.com) is one of the real estate industry's most popular speakers. He buys and sells 5-15 houses a month all over the US, in today's difficult market, from the comfort of his office. Larry speaks live an average of twice a week and holds two to three teleconferences a week. He is licensed as a mortgage lender, mortgage broker, real estate broker, and general contractor in North and South Carolina. Larry served as President (2003 & 2004) of the Metrolina Real Estate Investors Association in Charlotte, NC, a not-for-profit organization that has over 350 members (it is also the local chapter of the National Real Estate Investors Association). He has been investing in real estate for over 20 years.

Book excerpt: Suddenly, in 1994, the author stopped taking life for granted. When her existence filled with sunshine, parties and good times came to an end. A near fatal car crash left her comatose for six weeks; Gillian doesn't know what happened on that night and 'never will'. 'Gillian Mk2' chronicles her feisty determination to regain independence in a society where she was invisible. We follow her trek for the first four years. From hospitals, doctors, falls, nurses onto more hospitals, specialists, falls, attitudes, patients... Gillian Firth is lucky, clearly her family adore her, she lives to tell the tale and does so with blunt honesty. She knew nothing and only remembered she smoked because Pathetic bought her cigarettes, into the hospital ironically, her mum went mad. A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is serious, life-changing, but you laugh out loud, then cry and laugh again, as we listen to Gillian speaking. Watch how she improves, cringe or agree with her observations, feel the anger and frustration, be embarrassed by comments and reactions. This author will be remembered for her flippant, but serious, heart rending yet hilarious, kick in the teeth, that's what it is. Funny, factual and inspirational... my eyes are open.

Book excerpt: In the early 1960's the Military knew they needed to develop a new method of intelligence gathering in locating the enemy in the jungles of Vietnam. Early attempts at developing a mobile method of interception and location of radio transmissions failed. Some successes occurred prior to the mid-1960's, but there was no large scale plan on how to develop this into a major project to help win the war in Vietnam. Approval comes in 1966 and the project is named Phyllis Ann. The author becomes a part of this project as a mission leader in the winter of 1968. This novel is based on his experiences both in Pleiku Vietnam and Misawa Japan during some of the most turbulent times in our history. The taking of the Pueblo, Russian bombers testing our defenses, and the secret war in Laos were all historical events this young airman was involved in.

Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.
