Book excerpt: Direct care workers (DCWs) provide a wide range of health and human service needs, including assistance and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Research indicates the need for qualified staff is growing, and staff turnover is costly for agencies, affecting state and federal policymakers. With national policy requiring the transition from institutional settings to community-based alternatives, challenges for direct care workers include independent problem-solving and decision-making, along with greater responsibility. This study investigates the relationship between direct care staffs’ job satisfaction and self-monitoring of work tasks in residential service programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This research is intended to help further understand the relationship between job satisfaction and self-monitoring among DCWs that work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By understanding this relationship, it may help to possibly reduce turnover rates through refining task assignments and enhance support given beneficiaries of DCWs services.--Abstract

Book excerpt: Among the issues confronting America is long-term care for frail, older persons and others with chronic conditions and functional limitations that limit their ability to care for themselves. Improving the Quality of Long-Term Care takes a comprehensive look at the quality of care and quality of life in long-term care, including nursing homes, home health agencies, residential care facilities, family members and a variety of others. This book describes the current state of long-term care, identifying problem areas and offering recommendations for federal and state policymakers. Who uses long-term care? How have the characteristics of this population changed over time? What paths do people follow in long term care? The committee provides the latest information on these and other key questions. This book explores strengths and limitations of available data and research literature especially for settings other than nursing homes, on methods to measure, oversee, and improve the quality of long-term care. The committee makes recommendations on setting and enforcing standards of care, strengthening the caregiving workforce, reimbursement issues, and expanding the knowledge base to guide organizational and individual caregivers in improving the quality of care.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research studies on turnover in public sector, according to Selden and Moynihan (2000a, 63), are few. There is also a scarcity of research evident in the literature addressing employee turnover in mental health and mental retardation facilities (Ben-Dror 1994a, 244). Employee turnover in mental health and mental retardation facilities is high. For example, at Denton State School (DSS), the direct care employee turnover rate was reported at 65.25 percent in a recent year (Davis 2008a). In spite of this obstacle that affects the provision of services to individuals with disabilities, and the huge amount of taxpayers' money wasted in hiring and training new employees to fill the vacancies created by employees who left the service, scholars and practitioners have ignored this issue by not studying the causes of high turnover of direct care employees in mental health and mental retardation facilities. This dissertation is an attempt to analyze direct care employee work situations at Denton State School (DSS), a mental health and mental retardation facility and the largest state school in Texas under the Department Aging and Disability Services (DADS), in order to understand the reasons for high turnover of direct care employees in the school. The author's approach to this study is to understand direct care employees' and their supervisor' perceptions of the work they do at DSS. Survey questionnaire, face-to-face interview, and participant observation were tools used to gather data from direct care and supervisors at DSS. A total of 247 employees participated and the result of the data analyses showed that favoritism, fair pay, balance between work and personal life, flex work schedule, and staff appreciation are among the factors determined as possible influences on direct care staff intention to quit. The author suggested other topics that may be studied to enhance people's understanding of direct care employee situations in mental health and mental retardation facilities, and possibly reduce their rate of turnover.

It focuses on providing the reader a practical approach to dealing with the health and well-being of people with IDD in general terms as well as in dealing with specific conditions. In addition, it offers the reader a perspective from many different points of view in the health care delivery system as well as in different parts of the world. This is the 3rd , and much expanded edition, of a text that was first published in 1989 (Lea and Fibiger). The second edition was published in 2006 (Paul Brookes) and has been used as a formal required text in training programs for physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners as well as by administrators who are responsible for programs serving people with IDD. This book is considered the “Bible” in the field of health care for people with IDD since 1989 when the first edition came out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, developmental disabilities have been associated with crime in prejudicial and pejorative contexts. Offenders with Developmental Disabilities provides a balanced, comprehensive review of the prevalence, nature and development of offending by those with intellectual disabilities. Not only does this volume include coverage of evidence-based assessment and treatment ideas, strategies and plans, but also places the field in a historical, legal and ethical context. William Lindsay, John Taylor and Peter Sturmey have brought together a wealth of contributors from differing backgrounds to share new material and knowledge of assessments, treatment, and service issues in a single volume. Divided into five parts, Part I opens with theoretical issues; Part II deals with legal and services contexts including ethical concerns; Part III considers risk assessment, general assessment and approaches to evaluation; Part IV addresses specific issues of sexual offending, anger and aggression, fire raising, dual diagnosis, female offenders and personality disorder; Part V concludes with service development, professional and research issues. Forensic practitioners and students from psychology and psychiatry, lawyers and advocates, nurses and social workers will all find this comprehensive and practical book an inspiration in taking this field forward.
