The book in particular shows that the Bangla DP-internal phrasal movements are instances of discourse driven phenomena. This further leads to project a fine structure of nominal left-periphery in the Bangla DP, that has been argued in the background of the cross-linguistic evidence drawn from Gungbe, Greek, Albanian, and Russian languages. The central theoretical discussion of the book primarily revolves around the key conceptual domains of adjective movement, ellipsis, definiteness, and wh-movement in the Bangla DP.

Book excerpt: The structure of Determiner Phrase (DP) proposed by Abney 1987 was a new designation for the erstwhile Noun Phrase(NP). The shift of syntactic headship of nominals consolidated the hypothesis that phrasal and clausal architectures are similar. Examination of Determiner Phrases of two languages involves an understanding of the relations between various constituents of a nominal structure. Following Abney, a global discourse was on for re-negotiating the basic principles of determining the fundamental similarities across languages and local differences theoretically known as 'parameters' which distinguish sister languages. In an attempt to participate in that global discourse, this study focused on two Eastern Indic languages, Bangla and Asamiya. The study of the DP in these two languages aimed at exploring different types of DP structures in order to explore slightly overlapping databases and at working out the point of distinction in the DP structures of these two languages. The related issues dealt with here are the syntax of definiteness and quantification in these two languages.

On the one hand we want to offer a discussion of some of the more important properties of the nominal projection, on the other hand we want to provide the reader with tools for syntactic analysis which apply to the structure of DP but which are also relevant for other domains of syntax. In order to achieve this dual goal we will discuss phenomena which are related to the nominal projection in relation to other syntactic phenomena (e.g. pro drop will be related to N-ellipsis, the classification of pronouns will be applied to the syntax of possessive pronouns, N-movement will be compared to V-movement, the syntax of the genitive construction will be related to that of predicate inversion etc.). In the various chapters we will show how recent theoretical proposals (distributed morphology, anti-symmetry, checking theory) can cast light on aspects of the syntax of the NP. When necessary, we will provide a brief introduction of these theoretical proposals. We will also indicate problems with these analyses, whether they be inherent to the theories as such (e.g. what is the trigger for movement in antisymmetric approaches) or to the particular instantiations. The book cannot and will not provide the definitive analysis of the syntax of noun phrases. We consider that this would not be possible, given the current flux in generative syntax, with many new theoretical proposals being developed and explored, but the book aims at giving the reader the tools with which to conduct research and to evaluate proposals in the literature. In the discussion of various issues, we will apply the framework that is most adequate to deal with problems at hand. We will therefore not necessarily use the same approach throughout the discussion. Though proposals in the literature will be referred to when relevant, we cannot attempt to provide a critical survey of the literature. We feel that such a survey would be guided too strongly by theoretical choices, which would not be compatible with the pedagogical purposes this book has. The book is comparative in its approach, and data from different languages will be examined, including English, German, Dutch (West-Flemish), Greek, Romance, Semitic, Slavic, Albanian, Hungarian, Gungbe.

Book excerpt: This book makes a significant contribution to the Second Language Acquisition research field as it is the only study that exists on the acquisition of the Spanish Determiner Phrase (DP) by speakers of a Bantu language. The corpus was compiled using data from 14 interviews carried out over a 25-month period. The subjects of the study were four Swahili speakers learning Spanish as a third language (English is their L2) at the State University of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The data collected longitudinally was used to characterize the DP of the Swahili-Spanish IL and observe Bantu transfer. This study also represents an important contribution to the discussion on Creole formation since it provides valuable information on the role played by adult speakers in the formation of Creole languages. In this book, the features of the DP in the IL are compared with those of the DP found in three Spanish-lexifier Creoles: Palenquero, Chabacano and Papiamento. Although similar work has been done comparing the interlanguage of learners of English and French with Creoles that have these languages as lexifiers, no comparative studies of this type have been conducted for Spanish. Moreover, in the case of Palenquero, this study also represents the first of its kind to examine languages in which the substrate and the L1 involved belong to the same family of Bantu languages.
