Book excerpt: This document contains the papers presented at the Consultation on Aquaculture for Sustainable Rural Development which was organized jointly by FAO and NACA and held in Chiang Rai, Thailand, from March 29-31,1999 in order to develop the detailed structure of a regional program on aquaculture for sustainable rural development and to propose a strategy for its implementation. The consultation took an overview of the relevant information emerging from the presentations of country reports; lessons learned by specific projects; experiences of regional and international organizations and donor agencies; and findings of expert reviews. More sharply focused examination of critical issues and discussions on specific components of the draft program concept were followed through parallel working group discussions. The outputs of the working groups were further discussed during the concluding plenary. Finally, a detailed Program Framework on Aquaculture for Sustainable Rural Livelihood Development was conceived through consensus to serve as guiding principles for the formation of the program.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis The State of Food and Agriculture, 2005 by : Food and Agriculture Organization
Download or read book The State of Food and Agriculture, 2005 written by Food and Agriculture Organization and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 1.2 billion people live on less than one dollar a day, and recent estimates indicate that over 850 million people lack sufficient food for an active healthy life, mostly in rural areas. This FAO report examines the links between agriculture, trade and poverty and considers how international agricultural trade and trade liberalisation affect the world's poor and food-insecure. Topics discussed include: trends and patterns in international agricultural trade, including trade in the least developed countries and within regions, and the role of supermarkets; policy issues including domestic support, export competition and market access; macroeconomic impacts of agricultural trade reforms for poverty reduction and pro-poor development objectives; food insecurity and trade liberalisation measures. The report recommends a twin-track approach which seeks to invest in human capital, institutions and infrastructure to enable the poor to take advantage of trade-related opportunities, while establishing safety nets to protect vulnerable members of society. This publication contains a mini CD-ROM of the "FAO Statistical Yearbook 2004 Vol. 1/1" in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.
Book Synopsis A History of Farming Systems Research by : Michael P. Collinson
Download or read book A History of Farming Systems Research written by Michael P. Collinson and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed history of farming systems research (FSR). While it includes the application of FSR to developed country agriculture, its main focus is on FSR in its original role, with small scale, resource-poor farmers in less developed countries. There are some 40 contributions from nearly 50 contributors from 20 countries, illustrating both the diversity and yet the coherence of FSR. The five parts of the book cover: (1) FSR - understanding farmers and their farming (FSR origins and perspectives; understanding farming systems); (2) the applications of farming systems research (FSR in technology choice and development; FSR in extension and policy formulation); (3) institutional commitment to FSR (FSR: some institutional experiences in national agricultural research; dimensions of the organization of FSR; training for FSR); (4) FSR: the professional dimension (regional and international associations; FSR and the professional disciplines); and (5) cutting edge methods, abiding issues and the future for FSR.
