Book excerpt: This book offers the only comprehensive overview of the Palestinian economy in the West Bank and Gaza. It focuses on the unique features of this unusual economy during the last thirty years. Under Israeli occupation, the Palestinian economy suffered from poorly developed domestic labor and capital markets, and considerable dependence on the highly developed Israeli economy for employment, trade and financial resources. The book analyses past trends, present conditions and alternative arrangements for the future. A comprehensive data set is used and, for the first time, the public is presented with a detailed picture of the Palestinian economy, with tables and graphs. The authors propose new institutional arrangements between the Palestinian and Israeli economies - an economic filters plan - which will promote neither total integration nor total separation. The book will be of great value to anyone interested in the political economy of the Middle East, the economics of occupation and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political economy of Palestine through critical, interdisciplinary, and decolonial perspectives, underscoring that an approach to economics that does not consider the political—a de-politicized economics—is inadequate to understanding the situation in occupied Palestine. A critical interdisciplinary approach to political economy challenges prevailing neoliberal logics and structures that reproduce racial capitalism, and explores how the political economy of occupied Palestine is shaped by processes of accumulation by exploitation and dispossession from both Israel and global business, as well as from Palestinian elites. A decolonial approach to Palestinian political economy foregrounds struggles against neoliberal and settler colonial policies and institutions, and aids in the de-fragmentation of Palestinian life, land, and political economy that the Oslo Accords perpetuated, but whose histories of de-development over all of Palestine can be traced back for over a century. The chapters in this book offer an in-depth contextualization of the Palestinian political economy, analyze the political economy of integration, fragmentation, and inequality, and explore and problematize multiple sectors and themes of political economy in the absence of sovereignty.

Book excerpt: "This report documents how settlement businesses facilitate the growth and operations of settlements. These businesses depend on and contribute to the Israeli authorities' unlawful confiscation of Palestinian land and other resources. They also benefit from these violations, as well as Israel's discriminatory policies that provide privileges to settlements at the expense of Palestinians, such as access to land and water, government subsidies, and permits for developing land"--Publisher's description.

The study will examine the hypothesis that economic development is not possible due to major obstacles facing the Palestinian economy. Some of these obstacles are exogenous: (The Israeli Obstacles, Dangers of decreasing the International Aids and Risk of continuous American Policy). The others are endogenous: (the absence of a comprehensive development visions and strategy. To the extant that many Palestinians perceive the PNA as corrupt and inefficient, Bureaucracy; stumble and nepotism, Labor Force and Problems of Investment and Creating Business). While the fundamental constrain to development of Palestinian economy related to the fact that Palestinian people do not have a real state; The Palestinian Territory is treated as a politically independent, as though it is the Palestinian aspirations, but the fact on the ground is different. The Palestinian territory has effectively remained since 1967, and even since the signing of the Oslo agreement in 1993, under the economic and political control of Israel. Not surprisingly, the Palestinian economy therefore depending on the Israel's criteria that can regulate in the light of its own sovereign interests. Assuming the removal of these obstacles, what will happen to the process of economic development? Various scenarios will be examined, under the assumption that some of these obstacles will be removed. What is the possible impact of removing some of these obstacles? The study will focus on major issues such as recent economic performance, the prospect of cooperation in the region.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.7, University of Applied Sciences Osnabr ck (Osnabrueck University of Applied Sciences), 26 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Israel is a relatively young country and economy. In its short life of 60 years, its economy has matured through continuing crises and has become strong and well diversified. Almost all years of the country's existence it has enjoyed healthy economic growth. Apart from these achievements, the country and the economy are facing serious problems. The conflict with the Palestinians, which has been dragging on for decades, in the new millennium has intensified and became more and more violent. Besides the obvious humanitarian and political consequences, this conflict also has many economic implications - all but positive, both for Israel and the Palestinians. Both parties are paying a high economic price for the continuation of this conflict - with falling GDP's, loss of jobs, sanctions on one another and most importantly - the huge unfulfilled potential that lies in economic cooperation between the two. Israel is also facing an internal economic and social problem - the Ultra-orthodox Jews population group. Due to their unique lifestyle of abiding vigorously to religion, they almost do not participate in the Israeli labour market, rely heavily on government help and also do dot join the army like all other Israeli Jews. This group contributes to the poverty rate in an unproportional manner, being much poorer than other Israelis. Due to very high fertility rate, the Ultra-orthodox, who used to be just a small minority, are on the way to become almost a quarter of the population in two decades. This situation demands some urgent changes.
