Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume situates Indians in the contemporary world and profiles the major facets of their thought and behaviour; then goes back to trace their roots to ancient thought to see how the past predisposes and the present guides Indians in their everyday life. The volume begins with a conceptual framework showing how the Indian worldview has encompassed and enveloped a variety of ideas and influences from divergent sources. As a result, Indians are both collectivists and individualists, hierarchically oriented while respecting merit and quality, religious as well as secular and sexually indulgent, spiritual as well as materialists, excessively dependent but remarkably entrepreneurial, non-violent in principle but violent in practice and comfortable in shifting between analytical, synthetic as well as intuitive approaches to reality. Such a coexistence of opposites often causes inaction, hesitation and perfunctory action, but also equips Indians to be innovative by continuously aligning their thought and behaviour to the demands of a milieu. The milieu has an inner layer consisting of desh (place), kaal (time) and paatra (person), which are embedded in the larger societal contexts of castes and classes, poverty, corruption, fragmenting politics, conflicts and violence and unfolding global opportunities and challenges. Cultural heritage permeates in all these. Indians function in this tiered, multifactorial, dynamic space. This volume draws evidence from ancient texts and the latest national and international research, many of which were conducted by the author and his associates. It does not, however, hesitate to indulge in anecdotal evidence, cases and speculative ideas in order to complete the picture. The author takes an in-depth view of the Indian mindset without getting the reader lost in either the intricacies of ancient philosophical abyss or the trivialities of present-day non-events.

Book excerpt: Latest Edition: Introductory Economics (4th Edition)This textbook is carefully designed to provide the reader with a good understanding of the fundamental concepts of economics. The writing is lucid and at the student's level. There are twenty-nine “one-concept” chapters. Each chapter is suitably short, highlighting one economic principle. The student can study one concept and be reinforced by the learning process before proceeding to another chapter. Self review exercises conclude each chapter. The one-concept chapters also provide organizational flexibility for the instructor. The text is well integrated to show the relationship among the basic concepts and to offer a comprehensive overview of economics. There are six modules: The Economic Problem; Price Determination; Behind the Supply Curve; Level of Income; Money; and Trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feasibility study and business planLearn How to Present a Completed Feasibility StudyA feasibility study is a thoroughly researched analysis of a plan or method. The purpose of a feasibility study is to determine and then communicate whether an action being considered is practical for a business or project. These studies usually contain detailed information about the financial structure for the plan and an analysis of the market with regards to the proposal (if needed). It also contains the suggested logistics for delivering a product or service, the resources you'll need, the personnel support and the organizational structure required. Presenting your feasibility study is just as important as the work you put into it.How to Assemble Your Feasibility StudyHow you present your final study is just as important as the information it contains. If you have a lot of material, organize it into a portfolio or binder. Finding information easily and quickly is important to executives, managers, lenders, and investors, so include tabs (type them if at all possible) to indicate each component in your study.Cover letters should not be generic but should be individualized depending upon with whom you are submitting the study. Before you submit your study, have someone else proofread it for you to check for content and errors.Typographical errors will make your study appear rushed or unprofessional, and if your descriptions and calculations do not make sense to the reader the action will be ruled unfeasible as presented.Although you write your conclusion last, it serves as a summary of the details in your study. You can place it at the end of your document (before any exhibits and attachments), but placing it after the table of contents sets the tone and highlights key issues for the reader to be aware of before they read the rest of the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based largely on courses that the author taught at the Feinberg Graduate School of the Weizmann Institute. It conveys in a user-friendly way the basic and advanced techniques of linear algebra from the point of view of a working analyst. The techniques are illustrated by a wide sample of applications and examples that are chosen to highlight the tools of the trade. In short, this is material that the author has found to be useful in his own research and wishes that he had been exposed to as a graduate student. Roughly the first quarter of the book reviews the contents of a basic course in linear algebra, plus a little. The remaining chapters treat singular value decompositions, convexity, special classes of matrices, projections, assorted algorithms, and a number of applications. The applications are drawn from vector calculus, numerical analysis, control theory, complex analysis, convex optimization, and functional analysis. In particular, fixed point theorems, extremal problems, best approximations, matrix equations, zero location and eigenvalue location problems, matrices with nonnegative entries, and reproducing kernels are discussed. This new edition differs significantly from the second edition in both content and style. It includes a number of topics that did not appear in the earlier edition and excludes some that did. Moreover, most of the material that has been adapted from the earlier edition has been extensively rewritten and reorganized.

Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

Book excerpt: This volume contains articles on the history of Soviet mathematics, many of which are personal accounts by mathematicians who witnessed and contributed to the turbulent and glorious years of Moscow mathematics. The articles in the book focus on mathematical developments in that era, the personal lives of Russian mathematicians, and political events that shaped the course of scientific work in the Soviet Union. Important contributions include an article about Luzin and his school, based in part on documents that were released only after perestroika, and two articles on Kolmogorov. The volume concludes with annotated bibliographies in English and Russian for further reading. The revised edition is appended by an article of Tikhomirov, which provides an update and general overview of 20th-century Moscow mathematics, and it also includes an Index of Names. This book should appeal to mathematicians, historians, and anyone else interested in Soviet mathematical history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Euler was not only by far the most productive mathematician in the history of mankind, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time. He attained, like only a few scholars, a degree of popularity and fame which may well be compared with that of Galilei, Newton, or Einstein. Moreover he was a cosmopolitan in the truest sense of the word; he lived during his first twenty years in Basel, was active altogether for more than thirty years in Petersburg and for a quarter of a century in Berlin. Leonhard Euler’s unusually rich life and broadly diversified activity in the immediate vicinity of important personalities which have made history, may well justify an exposition. This book is based in part on unpublished sources and comes right out of the current research on Euler. It is entirely free of formulae as it has been written for a broad audience with interests in the history of culture and science.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the theory of dynamical systems with the aid of the Mathematica® computer algebra package. The book has a very hands-on approach and takes the reader from basic theory to recently published research material. Emphasized throughout are numerous applications to biology, chemical kinetics, economics, electronics, epidemiology, nonlinear optics, mechanics, population dynamics, and neural networks. Theorems and proofs are kept to a minimum. The first section deals with continuous systems using ordinary differential equations, while the second part is devoted to the study of discrete dynamical systems.
