Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Fathers Faith tells the personal and inspiring story of the Christian faith in action in the life of Dr. Jacqueline M. Gaither Respress, a lifelong educator. She blends together narratives, poetry, passages from the Scriptures, significant quotations, and her own research to accomplish two entwined goals. In the pages of My Fathers Faith, she shows how the strength of her Christian beliefs, passed on to her by her father, in particular, has sustained and strengthened her. Second, she uses her own story to map out a hopeful path for other African American women. She diagnoses the challenges and barriers that minority womenboth in youth and adulthoodface in American culture. She shows how hope that touches the lives of academically challenged students finds a face in teachers who remain focused on helping their students learn. Whether you find personal testimonies of the power of faith to be inspiring or you desire to learn how the educational system can become a support to young minority females, My Fathers Faith will meet your expectations. Along the way, you will come to know Dr. Respress and to appreciate the beauty of the faith that she inherited from her own father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT DO I DO WITH MY PAIN? Preparing for church on October 10, 2010, I was reminded of the ways in which I was being used by God in accomplishing HIS will. I am truly grateful, appreciative and remorseful all at the same time. Remorseful because I can remember a time I not only ran from God and what HE had to offer me, but I doubted HIS existence. Grateful because in spite of me and my past, God still loved me [John 15:13] and wanted nothing but the best for me. Appreciative because God never stopped trying to reach me! In creating me for a purpose with a purpose, HE was persistent in HIS approach in making sure I receive my inheritance. Persistent to the point of revealing HIMSELF to me and allowing me to see myself through HIS eyes! My passion for God this day is nothing like I would have imagined. Great is my boldness of speech toward YOU, great is my glorying of YOU: I am filled with comfort, I am exceedingly joyful in all my tribulation. [2 Corinthians 7] Ordering my steps while rebuilding my confidence (trust, belief) and faith in HIM, God was training me to be fearless and teaching me to fight for the uplifting of the Kingdom. Finally, unselfishly yielding myself to HIM, HE gradually enlightened me to HIS plan for my life. Then I realized God was and is with me always as I gladly accepted my assignment in knowing God was deliberately putting me in situations [sending me in places where there was darkness to be HIS light]. Once I was in, God gave me no way out as HE forced me to stand and fight. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. [Romans 8:15] So, this is not a time for passivity! It is a time for all of God's children to join in Spirit as we connect to God's heart in fulfilling HIS will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claiming Society for God focuses on common strategies employed by religiously orthodox, fundamentalist movements around the world. Rather than employing terrorism, as much of post-9/11 thinking suggests, these movements use a patient, under-the-radar strategy of infiltrating and subtly transforming civil society. Nancy J. Davis and Robert V. Robinson tell the story of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Shas in Israel, Comunione e Liberazione in Italy, and the Salvation Army in the United States. They show how these movements build massive grassroots networks of religiously based social service agencies, hospitals, schools, and businesses to bring their own brand of faith to popular and political fronts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of a state religion is seldom connected to religious freedom and liberal, modern, and democratic states. However, such a situation existed in Norway until 2012, when the Lutheran Church was the state church of Norway. A large majority of the population belonged to the church, even though the percentage in 2013 had fallen to well over seventy-five. The relationship between the church and minority religious movements demanded adaptation and compromises from the minority churches. The Salvation Army's enculturation and accommodation during its 128-year history in Norway illustrates such a situation. The book examines how The Salvation Army accommodated itself both doctrinally as well as practically to the situation of a dominant state church. The study reveals such a close affiliation of Salvationists to the Norwegian Church as a state institution, that it raises the question of whether a concept of civil religion was implicitly present in Salvationists' view of the state church and their own adherence to the church. This situation also raises the question of what constitutes a real church. The book indicates the tension between Lutheran and Salvationist ecclesiology as well as the influence from the Lutheran Church.

"Dr. LaMar Herndon considers a group of leaders often overlooked and occasionally denigrated-the-bivocational pastor. Constructing Blue Collar Leaders in a White Collar World integrates important theoretical leadership concepts with spiritual and practical realities. Dr. Herndon explores important topics such as trends and issues facing the global church and its leaders, leadership models, values and ethics, character and integrity, cultural effects, creativity and innovation, reverse mentoring, and strategic planning. This book is a profoundly honest hands-on guide to what constitutes a true leader serving as a bivocational minister." -Dr. Gary Oster Regent University School of Business & Leadership, Virginia Beach, VA "Down through my thirty plus years of education, ministry, and leadership I have read many books on the subject of leadership. Some have challenged me and inspired me, but none have done so at the level of Constructing Blue Collar Leaders in a White Collar World. As a State Minister, I work with many bivocational and blue collar Pastors. I will be using Dr. Herndon's book as a primary resource to assist me in working with those Pastors in challenging and inspiring them in their leadership development." -Dr. Darryl Allen State Minister KY Church of God Ministries, Adjunct Professor at Nazarene Bible College & Mid-America Christian University "It [Constructing Blue-Collar Leaders in a White-Collar World] is an excellent presentation of leadership issues every pastor needs to understand to some degree. The chapter on "Values and Ethics" is worth the price of the book. Thanks for sharing the results of your many hours of study and hard work." -Ray Gilder National Coordinator Bivocational and Small Church Leadership Network, Bivocational Small Church Ministries Specialist Tennessee Baptist Convention "Dr. LaMar Herndon presents leadership from a very down to earth and practical approach. This book seeks to help the bivocational church leader be effective while balancing these two worlds. I believe this book needs to be in every pastor, minister, and leaders library; whether bivocational or not." -Rev. Jewel D. Williams, M.R.E.
