Book excerpt: Isozymes, IV: Genetics and Evolution contains manuscripts presented at the Third International Conference on isozymes convened in April 1974 at Yale University. Separating 58 manuscripts into chapters, this book begins by elucidating the usefulness of isozymes as effective markers in studies of various aspects of genetics and evolution. Specific discussions are given to isozymes in evolutionary systematics and isozyme polymorphism maintenance mechanisms viewed from the standpoint of population genetics. This book explains multiple allelism and isozyme diversity in human populations. It also addresses the usefulness of isozyme variants as markers of population movement in man and plant population genetics.

This book was released on 1994-07-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organisms frequently synthesize enzymes in multiple molecular forms to catalyze the same basic biochemical reactions. Each of these enzymes exhibit somewhat different kinetic properties and perhaps, are also located in a specific part of the metabolic structure of the cell. This isozymic multiplicity only emphasizes the biochemical versatility and refinement of the genetic-enzyme structure of organisms.Since the isozyme concept was formulated some thirty-five years ago, and especially after the advent of transgenic technology, the deep interest in the area has led to thousands of research investigations and many international conferences on the subject. This volume is a collection of selected oral presentations from one such conference, which is by now well-known.Topics includes: isozymes in population and evolution genetics, isozyme markers in gene mapping, isozymes in plant genetics, role of isozymes for normal physiology, the use of isozymes in human population biology, molecular organization and developmental regulation of isozymes and other related topics.

Book excerpt: Identified Neurons and Behavior of Arthropods presents for the larger audience the papers delivered at a symposium of the same title. I organized this symposium so that a few of the many who owe him a great scientific debt could honor Professor C. A. G. (Kees) Wiersma upon his attaining the age of 70 and retiring from the California Institute of Technology. Everyone of the participants publicly acknowledged his debt to Kees Wiersma, but in a sense there was no need to do so, because the research reported spoke for itself. Seldom in a rapidly developing branch of modem science has all of the recent progress so clearly stemmed from the pioneering work of a single figure. But in this subject, the role of identified nerve cells in determining behavior, Wiersma stood virtually alone for 30 years. He it was who first showed that indi vidual nerve cells are recognizable and functionally important and have "per sonalities" of their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental cancer products (oncodevelopmental markers, ODM) not only serve as diagnostic and prognostic indicators but also may be used to study the nature of the carcinogenic process and the biology of tumors. For many years oncologists have searched for markers of cancer cells that would permit unequivocal recognition of cancer in contrast to noncancerous tissue. The earliest and still most widely used method of identification of cancer tissue or cells is the structural resemblance of cancer tissue to fetal or immature tissue. Pathologists not only recognize cancer by its morphologic similarity to fetal tissues, but also in many instances can relate the behavior of a given tumor to the degree of tissue differentiation. Thus, poorly differentiated tumors that resemble fetal tissue generally grow more rapidly and metastasize earlier than do well-differentiated tumors that more closely resemble adult tissue. In recent years the commonality of fetal and cancer tissue has been extended to products of tumor cells that, can be analyzed by biochemical, immunological, or physiological techniques. Increas ingly, products of cancer cells similar to fetal products are being identified and studied. These products range from cell-surface markers (fetal or differentiation antigens), placental proteins, hormones, and isoenzymes to a multitude of products, such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alphafetoprotein (AFP), lymphocyte markers, and nucleic acids, such as tRNA, that are produced in small amounts by v vi PREFACE continually differentiating cells in the adult but in much greater amounts by tumors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in the field of ecological genomics aim to determine how a genome or a population of genomes interacts with its environment across ecological and evolutionary timescales. Ecological genomics is trans-disciplinary by nature. Ecologists have turned to genomics to be able to elucidate the mechanistic bases of the biodiversity their research tries to understand. Genomicists have turned to ecology in order to better explain the functional cellular and molecular variation they observed in their model organisms. We provide an advanced-level book that covers this recent research and proposes future development for this field. A synthesis of the field of ecological genomics emerges from this volume. Ecological Genomics covers a wide array of organisms (microbes, plants and animals) in order to be able to identify central concepts that motivate and derive from recent investigations in different branches of the tree of life. Ecological Genomics covers 3 fields of research that have most benefited from the recent technological and conceptual developments in the field of ecological genomics: the study of life-history evolution and its impact of genome architectures; the study of the genomic bases of phenotypic plasticity and the study of the genomic bases of adaptation and speciation.
