Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior (stress-life curve) of gamma titanium aluminide (Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb, atomic percent) was examined by conducting two tests: first, a fretting wear test with a fatigue specimen in contact with a typical nickel-based superalloy contact pad in air at temperatures of 296 and 823 K and second, a high-cycle fatigue test of the prefretted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb fatigue specimen at 923 K. Reference high-cycle fatigue tests were also conducted with unfretted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb specimens at 923 K. All Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb fatigue specimens were machined from cast slabs. The results indicate that the stress-life results for the fretted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb specimens exhibited a behavior similar to those of the unfretted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb specimens. The values of maximum stress and life for the fretted specimens were almost the same as those for the unfretted specimens. The resultant stress-life curve for the unfretted fatigue specimens was very flat. The flat appearance in the stress-life curve of the unfretted specimens is attributed to the presence of a high density of casting pores. The fatigue strengths of both the fretted and unfretted specimens can be significantly affected by the presence of this porosity, which can decrease the fatigue life of Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb. The presence of the porosity made discerning the effect of fretting damage on fatigue strength and life of the specimens difficult. Miyoshi, Kazuhisa and Lerch, Bradley A. and Draper, Susan L. Book excerpt: Dr Theodore Nicholas ran the High Cycle Fatigue Program for the US Air Force between 1995 and 2003 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and is one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, having authored over 250 papers in leading archival journals and books. Bringing his plethora of expertise to this book, Dr Nicholas discusses the subject of high cycle fatigue (HCF) from an engineering viewpoint in response to a series of HCF failures in the USAF and the concurrent realization that HCF failures in general were taking place universally in both civilian and military engines. Topic covered include: - Constant life diagrams - Fatigue limits under combined LCF and HCF - Notch fatigue under HCF conditions - Foreign object damage (FOD) - Brings years of the Author's US Air Force experience in high cycle fatigue together in one text - Discusses HCF in the context of recent international military and civilian engine failures

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the high-cycle fatigue behaviour of metal components, thus covering essential needs of current industrial design. The new developments included in the book rely on the use of the mesoscopic scale approach in metal fatigue and allow the specific handling of such difficult fatigue problems as multiaxial, non-proportional loading conditions.

Book excerpt: The papers in this collection cover a diverse range of topics on the topic of fatigue of materials. The editors have grouped the papers into five sections. Sections 1 and 2 contain papers that (i) review the current state of knowledge both related and relevant to the subject of fatigue behavior of materials, and (ii) present new, innovative, and emerging techniques for experimental evaluation of the fatigue behavior. Sections 3 and 4 focus on advanced materials that are used in performance-critical applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, such as the alloys of titanium, nickel, aluminum, and magnesium. Section 5 presents papers relating to other materials of engineering interest, such as iron and steel, polymer, rubber, and composites.

Book excerpt: The fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6A1-4V was investigated in laboratory air and under a controlled environment consisting of synthetic seawater. Fretting fatigue tests were performed for both low and high cycle fatigue regimes. Finite element analysis was utilized to model and analyze the experimental data. The applied stress range and the Modified Shear Stress Range were evaluated as potential fatigue parameters. The results found from this study can be summarized as: (1) seawater had a deleterious effect on fretting fatigue life in the low cycle fatigue regime but improved life in the high cycle fatigue regime, (2) although the Q/P ratio for both conditions increased with an increasing applied stress, the difference between the two conditions was negligible, (3) debris from dry samples contained titanium and oxides while the debris from seawater samples contained titanium, oxides, and seawater contaminants, (4) fretting scar volume was larger under seawater conditions than dry conditions, (5) there were more, closely spaced striations on the fracture surface of the dry samples than of the seawater samples, and (6) both the applied (far field) stress range and the Modified Shear Stress Range can potentially be used as conservative fretting fatigue parameters under high cycle fatigue conditions.

Book excerpt: About 35 years ago, thermal fatigue was identified as an important phenomenon which limited the lifetime of high temperature plant. In the intervening years many investigations have been carried out, primarily to give guidance on likely endurance (especially in the presence of time dependent deformation) but latterly, with the introduction of sophisticated testing machines, to provide knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of failure. A previous edited book (Fatigue at High Temperature, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, 1983) summarised the state-of-the-art of high temperature fatigue testing and examined the factors influencing life, such as stress state, environment and microstructural effects. It also considered, in some detail, cyclic crack growth as a more rigorous approach to life limitation. The aim of the present volume (which in style and format follows exactly the same lines as its predecessor) is once again to pursue the desire to translate detailed laboratory knowledge into engineering design and assessment. There is, for example, a need to consider the limitations of the laboratory specimen and its relationship with engineering features. Many design procedures still rely on a simple endurance approach based on failure of a smooth specimen, and this is taken to indicate crack initiation in the component. In this volume, therefore, crack propagation is covered only incidentally, emphasis being placed instead on basic cyclic stress strain properties, non-isothermal behaviour, metallography, failure criteria and the need for agreed testing procedures.
