Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the proceedings of the Third European Symposium on "Analysis of Organic Micropollutants in Water", held in Oslo (Norway), from 19 to 21 September 1983, are presented. The symposium was organized within the framework of the Concerted Ac tion COST 64b bis *, which has the same name and is included in the Third R&D Programme on Environment of the Commission of the European Communi ties - Indirect and Concerted Actions - 1981 to 1985. The aim of the symposium was to review the progress and results achiev ed during the past two years, since the Second symposium, held in Killarney (Ireland) in November 1981. The programme of the symposium consisted of review papers covering dif ferent areas related to the analysis of the organic pollutants in water, in cluding sampling and sample treatment, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and specific analytical problems for some types of compounds. We think that the volume gives a rather complete overview of these activities in Europe. Moreover, the paper presented by D. Hunt reviews the development of the new technique mass spectrometry - mass spectrometry in the United States of America. Some special sessions concerned the presentation of original contri butions in form of poster, the extended versions of which are published in this volume.

Book excerpt: Organic Acids in Aquatic Ecosystems E. M. Perdue E. T. Gjessing Editors This volume consists of background papers and reports on discussions focused on identifying major processes that cause spatial and temporal variability in properties and concentrations of organic acids in aquatic ecosystems. Scientists in aquatic chemistry, environmental chemistry, soil chemistry, organic geochemistry, water treatment technology, forest ecology, and stream ecology collectively address four major questions: What is the composition of organic acids and how are they characterized? How are acid-base properties of "DOC" measured and modeled and how do they affect aquatic ecosystems? How do organic acids interact with solutes, surfaces, and organisms? What are the temporal and spatial variations of organic acids at the ecosystem level? This volume provides an up-to-date assessment of the state of knowledge of organic acids in aquatic ecosystems and identifies promising areas of new research that deserve the attention of all scientists who study chemical and biological processes in natural waters, where the importance of organic acids in such processes is not yet fully recognized.

Book excerpt: Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis deals with the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) in the analysis of small organic molecules. Over the past few years, time-of-flight (ToF) and Orbitrap MS have both experienced tremendous growth in a great number of analytical sectors and are now well established in many laboratories where high requirements are placed on analytical performance. This book gives a head-to-head comparison of these two technologies that compete directly with each other. As users with hands-on experience in both techniques, the authors provide a balanced description of the strengths and weaknesses of both techniques. In the vast majority of cases, ToF-MS and Orbitrap-MS have been used for qualitative purposes, mainly identification of discrete molecular entities such as drug metabolites or transformation products of environmental contaminants. This paradigm is now changing as quantitative capabilities are increasingly being explored, as are non-target approaches for unbiased broad-scope screening. In view of the continuous innovation of high-resolution MS instrument manufacturers in designing and developing more powerful machines, technological advances in both hardware and software are considerable, with many novel applications. This book summarizes and analyzes these trends. The compilation of selected examples from diverse analytical fields will allow the readers to discover not only the potential of high-resolution MS in their sector, but also shows advances in other fields that rely on hi-res MS. Provides comprehensive coverage of applications of time-of-flight and orbitrap mass spectrometry in environmental, food, doping, and forensic analysis Explores a variety of specialized techniques, giving a balanced description of the strengths and weaknesses of each Presents a general overview of imaging techniques within analysis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years there has been a growing concern over the increasing concentration of micropollutants originating from a great variety of sources including pharmaceutical, chemical engineering and personal care product industries in rivers, lakes, soil and groundwater. As most of the micropollutants are polar and persistent compounds, they are only partially or not at all removed from wastewater and thus can enter the environment posing a great risk to the biota. It is hypothesized that wastewater is one of the most important point sources for micropollutants. Treatment of Micropollutants in Water and Wastewater gives a comprehensive overview of modern analytical methods and will summarize novel single and hybrid methods to remove continuously emerging contaminants - micropollutants from the aqueous phase. New trends (e.g. sensor technology, nanotechnology and hybrid treatment technologies) are described in detail. The book is very timely because the new techniques are still in the development phase and have to be realized not only in the laboratory but also on a larger scale. The content of the book is divided into chapters that present current descriptive and analytical methods that are available to detect and measure micropollutants together with detailed information on various chemical, biological and physicochemical methods that have evolved over the last few decades. Treatment of Micropollutants in Water and Wastewater will also enable readers to make well informed choices through providing an understanding of why and how micropollutants must be removed from water sources, and what are the most appropriate and available techniques for providing a cost and technologically effective and sustainable solutions for reaching the goal of micropollutant-free water and wastewater. The book will be suitable for water and wastewater professionals as well for students and researchers in civil engineering, environmental engineering and process engineering fields.
