Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this volume results become generally available of a recent conference that was the first to discuss properties of isolated heart muscle cells from the adult myocardium as a new cardio logical research tool. The conference was held as an International Erwin Riesch Symposium un der the auspices of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fUr Herz- und Kreislaufforschung at Spangenberg Castle, March 22-25, 1984. It was made possible through funding by the Erwin Riesch Foun dation and the Bayer AG which deserve our gratitude for their generosity. It may not be fully reflected in this collection of papers that the atmosphere of this meeting was unique. The reason for this resided apparently in the still rudimentary experiences with the adult cardiocyte model that is now widely acknowledged to be very promising. Thus, quite basic inter ests brought together experts from different biological disciplines who in respect to this new mod el were all still "beginners". It was noteworthy that such common interests exerted a unifying effect upon otherwise rather separated fields of science. The main task of the years to come will certainly consist in improving isolation and culturing conditions for adult myocytes in order to fully establish the isolated cell model in heart research

Book excerpt: Over the past decades, the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases have been benefited significantly from intensive research activities. In order to provide a comprehensive “manual” in a field that has become as broad and deep as cardiovascular medicine, this volume of “Methods in Molecular Medicine” covers a wide spectrum of in vivo and in vitro techniques encompassing biochemical, pharmacological and molecular biology disciplines which are currently used to assess vascular disease progression. Each chapter included in this volume focuses on a specific vascular biology technique and describes various applications as well as caveats of these techniques. The protocols included here are described in detail, allowing beginners with little experience in the field of vascular biology to embark on new research projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myofibrillogenesis has been studied extensively over the last 100 years. Until recently, we have not had a comprehensive understanding of this fundamental process. The emergence of new technologies in molecular and cellular biology, combined with classical embryology, have started to unravel some of the complexities of myofibril assembly in striated muscles. In striated muscles, the contractile proteins are arranged in a highly ordered three dimensional lattice known as the sarcomere. The assembly of a myofibril involves the precise ordering of several proteins into a linear array of sarcomeres. Multiple isoforms in many of these proteins further complicate the process, making it difficult to define the precise role of each component. This volume has been compiled as a comprehensive reference on myofibrillogenesis. In addition, the book includes reviews on myofibrillar disarray under various pathological conditions, such as familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC), and incorporates a section on the conduction system in the heart. Much of the information in this volume has not been described elsewhere. Presented in a manner to be of value to students and teachers alike, "Myofibrillogenesis" will be an invaluable reference source for all in the fields of muscle biology and heart development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a treatise on cardiomyocytes, the most important cell for the contractile function of the heart. There has been significant progress in our understanding of the function-related structure, developmental processes and their determinants, mechanisms of cell cycle regulation, post-natal growth, energy metabolism, and reversible and irreversible response of cardiomyocytes to diverse forms of physiological stress and injury. There is also more clarity on the alterations in the biological mechanisms in cardiomyocytes that lead to pathological states and the changes in the cells that occur secondary to disease conditions. Thanks to these advances in knowledge, there have been great gains in attempts to identify disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets for better management of patients with heart diseases. Possibilities to induce regeneration or proliferation of cardiomyocytes and thus repair and or regenerate the damaged heart are also on the horizon.
