Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Propagation of Gamma Quanta in Matter deals with various problems of the propagation and absorption of gamma quanta in matter, including the occurrence of multiple scattering of radiation. A general account of theoretical methods of solving problems of multiple scattering of quanta is presented, with emphasis on the results of solving such problems. This book consists of three chapters and begins with a discussion on the interaction of gamma radiation with matter; multiple scattering of gamma quanta; and the distribution function and quantities connected with it. The next chapter focuses on the theory of multiple scattering of gamma quanta and covers subjects such as the transport equation and its analytical solution; method of moments; method of random sampling; and method of successive collisions. The last chapter examines the propagation of radiation for various geometrical configurations of the sources and absorbing media, paying particular attention to a point source in a homogeneous medium and on the boundary of two media; unidirectional radiation in a homogeneous medium; reflexion of gamma radiation from the surface of a scattering medium; a plane isotropic source; and a thick radiating layer of an absorbing medium. This monograph will appeal to students as well as physicists and engineers engaged in shield design problems.

Book Synopsis Particles and Nuclei by : Bogdan Povh
Download or read book Particles and Nuclei written by Bogdan Povh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To cope with modern developments, especially in nuclear physics research, this textbook presents nuclear and particle physics from a unifying point of view. The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. A section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridge the field of "nuclear and particle physics" and "modern astrophysics and cosmology". New developments are also covered. This concise text has become a standard reference for advanced and undergraduate courses.
Download or read book Radiation written by Ilya Obodovskiy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is ready to assert that practically none of the readers of this book will ever happen to deal with large doses of radiation. But the author, without a shadow of a doubt, claims that any readers of this book, regardless of gender, age, financial situation, type of professional activity, and habits, are actually exposed to low doses of radiation throughout their life. This book is devoted to the effect of small doses on the body. To understand the basic effects of radiation on humans, the book contains the necessary information from an atomic, molecular and nuclear physics, as well as from biochemistry and biology. Special attention is paid to the issues that are either not considered or discussed very briefly in existing literature. Examples include the ionization of inner atomic shells that play an essential role in radiological processes, and the questions of transformation of the energy of ionizing radiation in matter. The benefits of ionizing radiation to mankind is reflected in a wide range of radiation technologies used in science, industry, agriculture, culture, art, forensics, and, what is the most important application, medicine. Radiation: Fundamentals, Applications, Risks and Safety provides information on the use of radiation in modern life, its usefulness and indispensability. Experiments on the effects of small doses on bacteria, fungi, algae, insects, plants and animals are described. Human medical experiments are inhuman and ethically flawed. However, during the familiarity of mankind with ionizing radiation, a large number of population groups were subject to accumulation, exposed to radiation at doses of small but exceeding the natural background radiation. This book analyzes existing, real-life radiation results from survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Chernobyl and Fukushima, and examines studies of radiation effect on patients, radiologists, crews of long-distant flights and astronauts, on miners of uranium copies, on workers of nuclear industry and on militaries, exposed to ionizing radiation on a professional basis, and on the population of the various countries receiving environmental exposure. The author hopes that this book can mitigate the impact of radiation phobia, which prevails in the public consciousness over the last half century. - Explores the science of radiation and the effects of radiation technologies and biological processes - Analyzes the elementary processes of ionization and excitation - Summarizes information about inner shells ionization and its impact on matter and biological structures - Discusses quantum concepts in biology and clarifies the importance of epigenetics in radiological processes - Includes case studies focusing on humans irradiated by low doses of radiation and its effects

Book Synopsis Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Uranyl Compounds by : Eugene Rabinowitch
Download or read book Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Uranyl Compounds written by Eugene Rabinowitch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Uranyl Compounds is a guide to the research and physics of the actinide elements, particularly the uranyl ion. The book is introduced with the subject of the spectroscopy of uranyl salts in the solid state. Studies dealing with the fluorescence and absorption spectra of solid uranyl salts through band measurements and empirical classification, term analysis, and fluorescence spectrum in relation to excitation by light of various wavelengths are then discussed. The book also mentions the analysis of the uranyl spectrum by Dieke and co-workers, because of the precise measurements of the fluorescence and absorption bands obtained under the Manhattan project. The table determined by Pant and Sakhwalkar in their study of the florescence spectrum of solid, hydrated uranyl fluoride at -185 degrees centigrade is presented. The text also discusses the theory of electronic structure and spectra of the uranyl ion. The spectroscopy of uranyl compounds in solution and the uranyl fluorescence intensity and decay are then presented. The book then explains the process of measuring the intensity of slowly decaying florescence of uranyl salts. The primary photochemical reactions in uranyl compounds are found to be slow, giving rise to many secondary thermal reactions that may be unwanted. Researchers in the fields of chemistry and physics working on actinide elements will find this collection of monographs invaluable.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Neutron Slowing Down in Nuclear Reactors by : Joel H. Ferziger
Download or read book The Theory of Neutron Slowing Down in Nuclear Reactors written by Joel H. Ferziger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Neutron Slowing Down in Nuclear Reactors focuses on one facet of nuclear reactor design: the slowing down (or moderation) of neutrons from the high energies with which they are born in fission to the energies at which they are ultimately absorbed. In conjunction with the study of neutron moderation, calculations of reactor criticality are presented. A mathematical description of the slowing-down process is given, with particular emphasis on the problems encountered in the design of thermal reactors. This volume is comprised of four chapters and begins by considering the problems of neutron moderation and their importance in all types of reactors. An asymptotic reactor model is described, and the calculation of the elastic scattering frequency is explained. Subsequent chapters focus on the process of slowing down in finite and infinite medium by analyzing capture by individual resonances; resonance integrals in heterogeneous systems; the slowing-down kernels; the spherical harmonics method; statistical methods; and small source theory. The final chapter presents numerical solutions of the Boltzmann equation and covers topics such as the multigroup approach, group constants, and solution of the multigroup equations. This book will be a useful resource for nuclear physicists and engineers.
