Book excerpt: From Preface: "This publication challenges the prevailing opinion among scholars of African art that the word doll is an inappropriate designation for many genres of African art to which it is often applied. The word, it seems, evokes a limited set of images that are incompatible with the stereotype of African sculpture as objects laden with ritual and religious associations, associations which to many minds preclude any consideration of play as part of their existence. Our basic premise for this volume is that the problem is not the application of doll to African contexts but rather a profound misunderstanding of what a doll is. Playing with dolls, we argue, is serious business, and we in the United States and elsewhere in the Western world probably take ours too lightly. While the average parent views these figures as relatively inconsequential objects, it is becoming increasingly clear to social scientists that they can be active in establishing value systems and constructing identities...."

Book Synopsis Nora - A Doll's House by : Stef Smith
Download or read book Nora - A Doll's House written by Stef Smith and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You've lies in the whites of your eyes, Nora. What have you done...?' Nora is the perfect wife and mother. She is dutiful, beautiful and everything is always in its right place. But when a secret from her past comes back to haunt her, her life rapidly unravels. Over the course of three days, Nora must fight to protect herself and her family or risk losing everything. Henrik Ibsen's brutal portrayal of womanhood caused outrage when it was first performed in 1879. This bold new version by Stef Smith reframes the drama in three different time periods. The fight for women's suffrage, the Swinging Sixties and the modern day intertwine in this urgent, poetic play that asks how far have we really come in the past hundred years? Nora : A Doll's House was first produced by the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, in 2019, at Tramway, Glasgow. A new production opened at the Young Vic, London, in February 2020. It was a finalist for the 2020 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded annually to celebrate women who have written works of outstanding quality for the English-speaking theatre.

Book Synopsis My Crochet Doll by : Isabelle Kessedjian
Download or read book My Crochet Doll written by Isabelle Kessedjian and published by David and Charles. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make adorable crochet dolls with over fifty unique patterns for clothes and accessories. With a range of clothing and accessory patterns, dress up your doll for home and abroad, from basic underwear and shoes to dresses, dungarees, sweaters, coats, and hats. As well as wardrobe essentials, you can create accessories to match each outfit, including a teddy for bedtime, a bucket for the beach, cakes for the kitchen, and even a penguin for the North Pole! There’s a range of dressing-up costumes, with an adorable bear suit and a fun superhero mask and cape. The cute mini suitcase pattern is the perfect for storing all of your dolls belongings and it doubles up as a bed too! Be aware that crochet terms in the United States are different from those in the U.K. This can be confusing as the same terms are used to refer to different stitches under each system. All crochet patterns in this book are written in U.K. and European terms. U.S. crocheters must take care that they work the correct stitches. One way to tell which system is being used in other patterns is that the American system starts with a single crochet, which the U.K. system doesn't have; so patterns with “sc” in them can be identified as American patterns.
