Book excerpt: Excerpt from Islands and Their Mysteries Or is the island what the geologists call con structional, a gain rather than a relic, something on the plus Side And if so, is it part of a sub marine mountain chain that has been raised above the surface of the water, or is it the top of a submarine volcano, or is it a coral growth on the shoulders of either of these, or is it a deposit at a river mouth The destructional islands are mostly isolated parts of continents; the constructional islands are mostly children of the sea. Hence the old classification into continental and oceanic islands. Then, having settled the question of origin, we face that of history. For the island may become smaller and smaller as the weathering outruns any increase, or larger and larger as growth outruns erosion. Islands wax and wane; they appear and disappear. They have a life history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Island Mystery In 1914 there were not twenty men in England who had ever heard of the island of Salissa. Even now - I am writing in the spring of 1917 - the public is very bady informed about the events which gave the island a certain importance in the history of the war. A couple of months ago I asked a well-known press-cutting agency to supply me with a complete collection of all references to Salissa which had appeared in our newspapers. I received a single short paragraph from a second-rate society weekly. It ran thus: "Is it true that our new Minister for Balkan Problems has a curious story to tell about a certain island in the Mediterranean, and is there a lady in the case?" The Minister referred to is, of course, Sir Bartholomew Bland-Potterton. The island must be Salissa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Easter Island: The Story of an Expedition In dealing with the main topic of the work, an endeavour has been made to give some idea of the problem of Easter Island as the Expedition found it, and also of its work there. With regard to this part, some appeal is necessary to the understanding kind ness of the reader, for it has not been an easy tale to tell, nor one which could be straightforwardly recounted. The story of Easter is as yet a tangled skein. The dim past, to which the megalithic works bear witness - the island as the early voyagers found it - its more recent history and present state, all of these are intermingled threads, none of which can be followed without reference to the remaining clues. For those who would have preferred more scientific and fewer personal details, I can only humbly say wait, there is another volume in prospect with descriptions and dimensions of some two hundred and sixty burial-places on the island, thousands of measurements of statues, and other really absorbing matter. The numerical statements in the present book, dealing with archaeological remains, must be considered approximate till it has been possible to go again through the large collection of notes. It is fairly obvious why the writing of this story has fallen to the share of the sole feminine member of the Expedition. I had also, what was, in spite of all things, the good fortune to be fourteen weeks longer on the island than my husband. They were fat weeks too, when the first lean ones, with their inevitable difficulties, were past and the unsettlement towards the end had not arrived. He has, I need hardly say, given me every assistance with this wvork. Generally speaking, all things which it is possible to touch and handle, buildings, weapons, and orna ments, were in his department while things of a less tangible description, such as religion, history, and folk-lore fell to my lot. Those who know him will recognise his touches throughout, and the account of the last part of the voyage, after my return to England, has been written by him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Antarctic Mystery NO doubt the following narrative will be received with entire incredulity, but I think it well that the public should be put in possession of the facts narrated in An Antarctic Mystery. The public is free to believe them or not, at its good pleasure. No more appropriate scene for the wonderful and terrible adventures which I am about to relate could be imagined than the Desolation Islands, so called, in 1779, by Captain Cook. I lived there for several weeks, and I can affirm, on the evidence of my own eyes and my own experience, that the famous English explorer and navigator was happily inspired when he gave the islands that significant name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery The late afternoon Sky daunted its splendour of blue and gold like a banner over the Pacific, across whose depths the trade wind droned in measured cadence. On the ocean's wide expanse a hulk wallowed slug gishly, the forgotten relict of a once brave and sightly ship, possibly the Sphinx of some untold ocean tragedy, She lay black and forbidding in the ordered procession of waves. Half a mile to the east of the derelict hovered a ship's cutter, the turn of her crew's heads speaking expectancy. As far again beyond, the United States cruiser Wolverine outlined her severe and trim silhouette against the horizon. In all the spread of wave and sky no other thing was visible. For this was one of the desert parts of the Pacific, three hundred miles north of the steamship route from Yokohama to Honolulu, five hundred miles from the nearest land, Gardner Island, and more than seven hundred northwest of the Hawaiian group. On the cruiser's quarter-deck the Officers lined the starboard rail. Their interest was focussed on the derelict. Looks like a heavy job, said Ives, one of the junior lieutenants. These floaters that lie with deck almost awash will stand more hammering than a mud fort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
