Book excerpt: Claire Wynter returns to the U.S. from a successful search for her missing grandmother in Jamaica, where Karl Grayson from the island’s well-to-do class, descendants of English settlers, had taken an interest in her while helping her in the search. Claire brings back with her the memory of their nascent romance and her promise to return to Karl soon. But she also brings back the words from Karl’s mother who expressed the fear that her grandchildren would be dark. Claire is deeply hurt by the racial slur and decides to give Karl Grayson and his family a wide berth. Setting aside her promise to return to him soon, she resumes her satisfying life as communications director at a university and immerses herself in her work. But when her close friend develops what seems to be a promising relationship, Claire has second thoughts and is stirred to revive her near-romance with Karl. She makes a call to the island, connects with him, and life for her takes a dramatic turn. Island Hearts is a piece of Christian fiction that exposes racial bias and pride of place, and reveals the virtues of faith and devotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Heart and the Island, Chiara Mazzucchelli explores the strong bond between Sicilian American writers and the island of Sicily. Self-contained yet connected to the mainland, geographically separated from yet politically united to the rest of Italy, Sicily occupies a unique position. Throughout the twentieth century, the sense of a distinct sicilianità—or Sicilianness—has manifested itself in a corpus of texts that, although subsumed under the broader context of Italian literature, have distinguished themselves as examples of an exquisitely Sicilian literary experience. Mazzucchelli argues that a parallel phenomenon—sicilianamericanità—has emerged in the United States. Focusing on the island's geography, history, and culture, she examines how many American authors of Sicilian descent derive inspiration from their ethnic milieu and lay out a recognizable set of Sicilian culture markers in their works, thereby producing a literature that is distinctly Sicilian American. Drawing on both Italian and Italian American scholarship, The Heart and the Island is the first full-length study of Sicilian American literature, and it opens a space for new interdisciplinary discussions on what it means to be Italian on both sides of the ocean.

Book excerpt: Ryu's plans are nearing fruition...but he can't take any joy in this progress. Not now that he knows the identity of the man responsible for all he and his siblings' pain. Someone far closer than he could have dreamed. The only solace he finds is watching Delilah dance. Delilah's attraction to Ryu makes no sense, and she would have been happy to ignore it if not for the threats she's received. Threats against her little sister. Threats to hurt her if Delilah isn't able to find out more information on the Horsemen. Ryu and Delilah don't trust each other--and with good reason--but they can't deny the chemistry that sparks to life every time they touch. As they grow closer and closer, so does the danger to Delilah's sister...and to the Horsemen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Downtowns are more than economic engines: they are repositories of knowledge and culture and generators of new ideas, technology, and ventures. They are the heart of the city that drives its future. If we are to have healthy downtowns, we need to understand what downtown is all about; how and why some American downtowns never stopped thriving (such as San Jose and Houston), some have been in decline for half a century (including Detroit and St. Louis), and still others are resurging after temporary decline (many, including Lower Manhattan and Los Angeles). The downtowns that are prospering are those that more easily adapt to changing needs and lifestyles. In The Heart of the City, distinguished urban planner Alexander Garvin shares lessons on how to plan for a mix of housing, businesses, and attractions; enhance the public realm; improve mobility; and successfully manage downtown services. Garvin opens the book with diagnoses of downtowns across the United States, including the people, businesses, institutions, and public agencies implementing changes. In a review of prescriptions and treatments for any downtown, Garvin shares brief accounts—of both successes and failures—of what individuals with very different objectives have done to change their downtowns. The final chapters look at what is possible for downtowns in the future, closing with suggested national, state, and local legislation to create standard downtown business improvement districts to better manage downtowns. This book will help public officials, civic organizations, downtown business property owners, and people who care about cities learn from successful recent actions in downtowns across the country, and expand opportunities facing their downtown. Garvin provides recommendations for continuing actions to help any downtown thrive, ensuring a prosperous and thrilling future for the 21st-century American city.

This cannot be successfully completed if we choose the path that leads us toward negativity and unhappiness. That is why Pete and Mejik have come; to extend an invitation... This remarkable book takes us on an adventure to the source of our Truth; that which we must uncover in order to be happy. Through the sacred words of Pete and Mejik, entities who have brought their timeless wisdom to this world, secrets long forgotten are once again revealed. Islands of the Soul employs visualizations and meditations meant to connect us with the seven Islands within us; Quality, Love, Knowledge, Beauty, Balance, Perception, and Nothingness. It is a guide to the regions of our selves that we too often ignore, yet desperately yearn to find. Instead of looking to outside sources for what we desire, we are taught that we alone have the power to manifest our dreams and wishes. We walk away from this book feeling enlightened, knowing we can achieve anything without fear. For once we choose to access our Islands, we create a pathway beyond the realm of fear; a pathway to the Divine within.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Caribbean Studies. Ida Faubert (1882--1969) is a 20th-century Haitian-French poet considered a Caribbean--and especially Haitian--literary foremother. An English-language volume of Faubert's makes her work more widely accessible to students, scholars, and readers of Latin-American, African-diasporic, Caribbean and Haitian letters; and more generally available to readers of poetry and the poetry of women. Born in Port-au-Prince and reared in Paris, Faubert neither easily fit socially-prescribed categories for women of color in France or Haiti, nor conformed to them--living and burning through France's Belle Ã%poque, world wars, and Haiti's Indigenist revolt in art. Bicultural, biracial, privileged, and complex, Faubert was a deft writer and socialite who promoted and participated in the movements of Haitian writers and literature in Haiti and France. While her work is garnering growing critical attention, she is seen as one of Haiti's great women poets.
