Jeder von uns kann von Rassismus, Antizionismus, Islamophobie direkt oder indirekt getroffen werden, jeder von uns wieder Opfer dieser dumpfen und dummen Gewalt und der geistigen Brandstifter werden. Die moralischen Instanzen und politischen Eliten sowie Presse und Medien haben versagt und geben der Bevölkerung keine Orientierung in dieser Menschheitsfrage. Ehrliche und selbstkritische Diskussionen finden nicht statt, das Mittelmaß in der Politik und die Verharmlosung des rechten Rands lassen viele Menschen gleichgültig und unbeteiligt gegenüber den Gefahren. Es ist Pflicht eines jeden, gegen die neuen Rattenfänger und geistigen Brandstifter und alle anzugehen, die im Gewand von Gutmenschen die Entwicklung durch Nichtstun und Wegschauen unterstützen.

In Deutschland ist es in erster Line der Pädagogik-Professor Wilhelm Heitmeyer, der im Rahmen seiner Langzeitforschung zur „Gruppenbezogenen Menschenfeindlichkeit“ den Begriff der Islamophobie etabliert hat. Unter bewusster Ausklammerung einer rationalen Kritik am Islam wurden diese Formulierungen unter dem Schlagwort der „Islamophobie“ zusammengefasst und bildeten einen nicht unumstrittenen Begriff, der im Diskurs um eine generell ablehnende Haltung gegenüber muslimischen Personen und allen Glaubensrichtungen, Symbolen und religiösen Praktiken des Islams benutzt wird. Ablehnende und feindselige Haltungen gegenüber einer fremden Kultur, einer anderen Religion, Fremdenfeindlichkeit oder Rassismus sind in der Vorurteils- und Rassismusforschung keine neuen Phänomene. Seit einigen Jahren sind allerdings Parallelen bei Feindseligkeiten gegenüber Muslimen und Juden zu beobachten. Dieser neue und in der Forschung teilweise umstrittene Zusammenhang ist dabei kein rein wissenschaftliches, theoretisches Konstrukt, sondern orientiert sich durchaus an konkreten Ereignissen. So wurde beispielsweise am 13. Dezember 2008 die Außenmauer der Gedenkstätte des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers Mauthausen in Oberösterreich mit dem Satz: „Was unseren Vätern der Jud ist für uns die Moslembrut seid auf der Hut! 3. Weltkrieg – 8. Kreuzzug“ beschmiert. Einige Wochen zuvor ist es der Leiter des Berliner Zentrums für Antisemitismusforschung, Wolfgang Benz, welcher im Vorwort des 17. Jahrbuchs für Antisemitismusforschung schreibt: „Die pauschale Stigmatisierung des Islam und der Muslime wird in den Medien von Wissenschaftlern, Politikern und auf alltäglichen Foren geübt“, dabei gehe die Antisemitismusforschung von einer Vergleichbarkeit der Stimmung gegen Muslime mit Antisemitismus und Judenfeindschaft aus. In beiden Fällen würden „Verschwörungsfantasien ebenso wie vermeintliche Grundsätze und Gebote der Religion, die mit mehr Eifer als Sachkenntnis behauptet wurden“ zum Tragen kommen. Gerade die Argumentation unter der Zuhilfenahme von Stereotypen sei als ein Phänomen aus der Antisemitismusforschung bekannt und aus diesem Grund im Zusammenhang mit Islamfeindschaft interessant. Looking for insights into the views and rationales of young Muslims toward Jews, Günther Jikeli and his colleagues interviewed 117 ordinary Muslim men in London (chiefly of South Asian background), Paris (chiefly North African), and Berlin (chiefly Turkish). The researchers sought information about stereotypes of Jews, arguments used to support hostility toward Jews, the role played by the Middle East conflict and Islamist ideology in perceptions of Jews, the possible sources of antisemitic views, and, by contrast, what would motivate Muslims to actively oppose antisemitism. They also learned how the men perceive discrimination and exclusion as well as their own national identification. This study is rich in qualitative data that will mark a significant step along the path toward a better understanding of contemporary antisemitism in Europe.

In fact, there is substantial evidence that it is again on the rise, manifest in violent acts against Jews in some quarters, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse in mainstream European society. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. It demonstrates that hostility against Jews is not just a right-wing phenomenon or a phenomenon among the uneducated, but is manifest among all social classes, including intellectuals. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and to the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well as communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain, this volume shows how language plays a crucial role in activating and re-activating antisemitism. It presents quantitative estimates for both xenophobia and xenophilia in the German population, including short-time changes. The book suggests a conceptual change of perspectives. It focuses not only on the pathogenic model that accounts for outcomes such as xenophobia, Islamophobia and other forms of (inter-religious) prejudice, but on a salutogenic model. In the book’s view, the salutogenic model entails xenosophia: the wisdom, creativity and inspiration that emerges from the encounter with the strange and the strange religion. The book addresses individual dispositions, which may lead to xenophobia or xenosophia, and takes into account predictors such as religiosity, religious schemata, value preferences, tolerance of complexity, and violence legitimizing norms of masculinity. A selection of case studies present typical biographical trajectories toward xenosophia.
