The Qur'?n receives the attention of five authors: Andrew Rippin focuses on references to the pre-Islamic Han?fs, while Issa Boullata traces poetic citation in Qur'?nic exegesis. Sulami's commentary is discussed by Gerhard Bowering, and Hallaq draws attention to the unique place the Qur'?n occupied in Sh?tib?'s legal theory. Finally, W.C. Smith looks at the Qur'?n from a comparativist perspective. Ulrich Haarmann and Donald P. Little deal, respectively, with the attitudes of medieval Egyptians towards the Pyramids, and the nature of S?f? institutions under the Mamluks. Mehdi Mohaghegh, Hasan Murad and Paul Walker treat philosophical and theological issues, while Eric Ormsby analyzes the structure of experience in Ghazali. Sajida Alvi explores the religious writings of the eighteenth-century Indian scholar Pan?pat?, and Uner Turgay examines Circassian immigration to the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Orthodoxy and aberrancy in the Ithna 'Ashar? tradition is the subject of Savory's article, and the notion of literature in Arab and Islamic culture is treated by Wickens. Finally, Bernard Weiss compares Islamic and Western conceptions of law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception, the study of ad th conducted by scholars trained in the Western academic tradition has been marked by sharp methodological debates. A focal issue is the origin and development of traditions on the advent of Islam. Scholars' verdicts on these traditions have ranged from late fabrications without any historical value for the time concerning which the narrations purport to give information to early, accurately transmitted texts that allow one to reconstruct Islamic origins . Starting from previous contributions to the debate, the studies collected in this volume show that, by careful analysis of their texts and chains of transmission, the history of Muslim traditions can be reconstructed with a high degree of probability and their historicity assessed afresh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Proto-Salafist" 14th-century theologian Ibn Taymiyya is recognized as the intellectual forefather of contemporary Salafism and Jihadism. This volume offers a unique approach to the study of Ibn Taymiyya, by offering an English translation of his fundamental political treatise, The Office of Islamic Government, and shorter collections from The Collected Fatwas and The Prophetic Way, and Islamic Governance in Reconciling between the Ruler and the Ruled. The volume not only sheds light on these primary sources through translation and annotation, but also offers a theoretical analysis of Ibn Taymiyya’s thought and how his legal views can be reconciled with current trends in Islamic political theory. The analysis provides an overview of Ibn Taymiyya’s geopolitical context, and includes an original study of his normative political thought. In examining the contemporary implications of Ibn Taymiyya’s political theology, the authors explore his doctrine of the Islamic state in the context of Islamic decolonial theory. Islam and the State in Ibn Taymiyya will appeal to academics in the fields of political science and religious studies, particularly within the field of Islamic history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most systematic, critical study of an especially important tradition from early Islamic history, the so-called incident of the Satanic verses.” —Choice One of the most controversial episodes in the life of the Prophet Muhammad concerns an incident in which he allegedly mistook words suggested by Satan as divine revelation. Known as the Satanic verses, these praises to the pagan deities contradict the Islamic belief that Allah is one and absolute. Muslims today?of all sects?deny that the incident of the Satanic verses took place. But as Shahab Ahmed explains, Muslims did not always hold this view. Before Orthodoxy wrestles with the question of how religions establish truth?especially religions such as Islam that lack a centralized authority to codify beliefs. Taking the now universally rejected incident of the Satanic verses as a case study in the formation of Islamic orthodoxy, Ahmed shows that early Muslims, circa 632 to 800 CE, held the exact opposite belief. For them, the Satanic verses were an established fact in the history of the Prophet. Ahmed offers a detailed account of the attitudes of Muslims to the Satanic verses in the first two centuries of Islam and traces the chains of transmission in the historical reports known as riwayah. Touching directly on the nature of Muhammad’s prophetic visions, the interpretation of the Satanic verses incident is a question of profound importance in Islam, one that plays a role in defining the limits of what Muslims may legitimately say and do?issues crucial to understanding the contemporary Islamic world.

Book excerpt: Did the Honorable Elijah Muhammad teach true Islam or was he simply a powerful social reformer who spun an interpretation of Islam which, while socially and culturally uplifting, was religiously blasphemous? What criteria should be used to assess his Islamicity? The Qur an and Sunnah obviously, but whose reading of the Qur an and Sunnah is to be privileged in this discussion? Islamic scholar Dr Wesley Muhammad, who holds a Doctorate in Islamic Studies from one of America s top Public Ivy League universities, brings to this discussion for the first time a wealth of information from and concerning the Classical Arabic/Islamic tradition that has up until now been omitted. This work by Dr Wesley puts the most controversial aspect of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad s teachings the claim that God is a man in the context of the Classical Arabic/Islamic Tradition. He demonstrates that the original Arabic context of the Qur an and the Sunnah, as well as the Arabic Sunni orthodoxy that first came together in the 8th-9th centuries, was markedly different from the de-Arabized orthodoxy that will develop later and which now dominates all discussion of God in Islam. When judged on the basis of this de-Arabized Islam, the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad indeed appear radically divergent and un-islamic . However, when viewed from the perspective of the Arabic Qur an and Sunnah and the Arabic Sunni Tradition that Dr. Wesley has helped rediscover, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad s teachings appear recognizably Islamic as they are consistent with what came to and through Prophet Muhammad b. Abd Allah, the Seal of the Prophets. This newly revised 2nd edition also includes an intense academic dialogue between the scholars of the respective religious communities of Minister Louis Farrakhan (Nation of Islam) and Imam W.D. Mohammed (Mosque Cares) discussing the controversial subject matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I.B. Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies Al-Ghazali (1058-1111 CE) is arguably one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Islam and his writings have received greater scholarly attention in the West than those of any other Muslim scholar. This study explores and important dimension of his thought that has not yet been fully examined, namely, his polemical engagement with the Ismailis of the Fatimid and early Alamut periods. Al-Ghazali's debate with the Ismailis constitutes an important chapter in the history of Muslim thought and this book also explores the wider intellectual and political significance of this encounter, and especially the light it sheds on the central tensions and questions of the age in which al-Ghazali lived.
