Book excerpt: Isabelle de Charrière, formerly best known for her friendship with James Boswell and Benjamin Constant, is now recognised as one of the most fascinating literary figures of her time, a brilliant letter-writer and gifted novelist. Cecil Courney's biography chronicles her life in a lively, comprehensive and scholarly fashion and makes full use of the original sources, notably Belle's extensive correspondence with many of the leading figures of her time. Part one covers the first thirty years of Belle de Zuylen's life from her birth in 1740 into the sheltered, leisurely and elegant milieu of an old-established Dutch aristocratic family. Her early intellectual development leads her to challenge accepted ideas and to explore in writing realms of experience undreamt of in the philosophy of the convention-ridden society in which she lives. Moving through her correspondence with Constant d'Hermenches and Boswell and the story of her many suitors, the account of this period ends in her late and unremarkable marriage (1771) to her brother's former tutor, Charles-Emmanuel de Charrière. The second part is devoted to Belle's life after her marriage. She takes up residence at Le Pontet, the Charrière family home near Neuchâtel, travels in Switzerland and Holland, forms a mysterious romantic attachment to a young man who later abandons her and, after a period spent in Paris (1786-1787), resolves never to set foot again outside Le Pontet. It is here that Belle creates a haven for intellectual activity, whose members, including the young Benjamin Constant, are brought intensely to life in her inimitable correspondence and in this thoughtful and sympathetic portrait of one of the most engaging figures of the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: Isabella (1740-1805) is best known for four novels portraying provincial courtship, marriage, and domestic life. At age 20 she began a clandestine correspondence with Constant (1722-85), middle-aged Swiss colonel stationed in Holland, a friend of Voltaire, an accomplished musician, amateur writer, and lady's man. The correspondence lasted over 15 years, is almost all extant, and ranges through many social and political issues of the day as well as personal events and concerns. The Whatley's annotate and provide biographical sketches of people mentioned. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only available English translation of writings by an Enlightenment-era Dutch aristocrat, writer, composer-and woman. Born Dutch, noble, and free-spirited, Isabelle de Charrière (also known as Belle de Zuylen) was an enlightened woman whose writings-not unlike Jane Austen's-tackled the intricacies of high society, particularly in matters of love. Published when she was only twenty- two, "The Nobleman" is aPersuasion-like tale whose heroine challenges her stodgy father in order to marry a man of unassuming ancestry. But Charrière did not confine herself to simple marriage plots and country courtships. Another story, "Eagonlette and Suggestina," is a thinly veiled critique of Marie Antoinette, cleverly disguised as a fairy tale. The Nobleman and Other Romances will delight fans of Jane Austen and Enlightenment-era French literature. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: The messy and multi-layered issue of intimacy in connection with transnationality and spatiality is the topic of this volume on women’s writing in the long nineteenth century. A series of intimacies are dealt with through case studies from a wide range of countries situated on the European fringes. Within the field of feminist literary studies, the volume thus differs from other publications with a narrower scope, such as Western Europe or specific regions. More broadly, the chapters in this volume offer a variety of approaches to intimacy and generous bibliographical references for researchers in humanities and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: During the eighteenth century, elite women participated in the philosophical, scientific, and political controversies that resulted in the overthrow of monarchy, the reconceptualisation of marriage, and the emergence of modern, democratic institutions. In this comprehensive study, Karen Green outlines and discusses the ideas and arguments of these women, exploring the development of their distinctive and contrasting political positions, and their engagement with the works of political thinkers such as Hobbes, Locke, Mandeville and Rousseau. Her exploration ranges across Europe from England through France, Italy, Germany and Russia, and discusses thinkers including Mary Astell, Emilie Du Châtelet, Luise Kulmus-Gottsched and Elisabetta Caminer Turra. This study demonstrates the depth of women's contributions to eighteenth-century political debates, recovering their historical significance and deepening our understanding of this period in intellectual history. It will provide an essential resource for readers in political philosophy, political theory, intellectual history, and women's studies.
