Cushing, of heresy for holding that Jews and Protestants could be saved, he backed up his charge by producing passages from the writings of fathers of the church such as St. Augustine, of eminent theologians such as St. Thomas Aquinas, and from the decrees of popes and councils, to prove that it was a dogma of faith that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. He did seem to have the weight of evidence on his side, and it was not easy to see how the modern idea that non-Catholics can be saved could be reconciled with the church's traditional doctrine that excluded them from salvation. Many in the Catholic Church have felt that while Feeney must surely have been wrong, the questions he raised were never satisfactorily answered. Can the optimism of Vatican II about the universal possibility of salvation be defended as an example of homogeneous development of doctrine? Or would it be more honest to say that the Catholic Church has recognized that its previous teaching was mistaken? What hopes can we entertain of a person to whom the science of virtue and eternal salvation doth not seem interesting or worth his application? "It is impossible," says St. Chrysostom, "that a man should be saved, who neglects assiduous pious reading." No less criminal and dangerous is the disposition of those who misspend their precious moments in reading romances, which fill the mind with a worldly spirit, with a love of vanity, pleasure, idleness, and trifling, which destroy and lay waste all the generous sentiments of virtue in the heart, and sow there the seeds of every vice, which extend their influence over the whole soul. Who seeks nourishment from poison? What food is to the body, that our thoughts and reflections are to the mind: by them the affections of the soul arc nourished. The chameleon changes its color as it is affected by sadness, anger, or joy, or by the color upon which it sits; and we see an insect borrow its lustre and hue from the plant or leaf upon which it feeds. In like manner, what our meditations and affections are, such will our souls become, either holy and spiritual, or earthly and carnal. By pious reading the mind is instructed and enlightened, and the affections of the heart are purified and inflamed. Reading religions books is commended by St. Paul as the summary of spiritual advice. (2 Tim. 14, 13.) Devout persons never want a spur to assiduous reading, or meditation; they are insatiable in this exercise, and according to the golden motto of Thomas a Kempis, they find their chief delight in a closet with a good book. Worldly and tepid Christians stand certainly in the most need of this help to virtue. The world is a whirlpool of business, pleasure and sin. Its torrent is always beating upon their hearts, ready to break in and bury them under its flood, unless frequent pious reading oppose a strong fence to its waves. The more deeply a person is immersed in its tumultuous cares, so much the greater ought his solicitude to be to seek repose, after the fatigues and dissipations of business and company; to plunge his heart by secret prayer in the ocean of the divine immensity, and by pious reading to afford his soul some spiritual reflection; as the wearied husbandman, returning from his labor, recruits his spent vigor and exhausted strength by allowing his body necessary refreshment and repose. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, has declared that He was sent by His heavenly Father "to preach the Gospel to the poor." Nine years ago, in the pamphlet which I was to publish, after having shown Catholic priests in their true light, I was making to the American people the following appeal: "American citizens, Protestants of all creeds, Jews, and all of you who do not believe in holy water, allow a fellow-citzen to point out to your attention an immense peril which threatens the life, welfare and prosperity of this beautiful land. "Many of you are alarmed at other impending dangers, and denounce, for instance, Chinese immigration, monopolies and corporations, Monnonism and other evils. Allow me to tell you that these evils are nothing in comparison with the one I dread for you. "When I was in office as a priest in New York, I heard a priest express, in a meeting, the Catholic idea on the destiny of the church in this country. Though, I do not believe he was a prophet, he prophesied, however, that, in fifty years from date, all America would be Catholic, and that the statue of the Blessed Virgin would replace the Statue of Liberty on the dome of the Capitol at Washington. "This is the real aim of Catholic priests. They want no less. "To attain that end, they mix in politics. They fill all offices with their creatures. Mayors, police officers, judges, assemblymen, senators are or must be theirs. They want a Catholic president. They want only Catholic schools. They want all freedom for themselves alone. As they pretend that their church is the only true one, out of which there is no salvation possible, they want to destroy your religious creeds and your public school system, and form the young generation to their image and resemblance. "To-day, they are still in minority and they'do not dare to compromise their cause by imprudent acts of intolerance and religious persecution. But let them take a strong hold upon this land, and you will see them renew the horrors of the Inquisition, the prisons, the faggots, the gibbets, the Saint-Bartholomew.
