Book excerpt: More than two decades since India was forced to liberalize its economy, the country has undergone radical transformation – from a planned, centralized economy, to one that seeks to harness market forces and technological change. Today, India is at a crossroads – even as political discourse has undergone churn, there is a distinct lack of conceptual clarity and well-defined economic policymaking. As a result, there is little that separates the economic and foreign policies of successive governments, despite divergent political ideologies, which has been the hallmark of Indian policymaking. In Wonked!, economist Vivan Sharan breaks down the challenges facing the Indian economy today, while developing a framework through which broad policy strategies can be laid down based on principles acceptable to multiple stakeholders. How should the Indian digital economy be regulated in the days to come? How does one realize greater value from Indian agriculture? Why is there a shortage of electricity despite India being a power-surplus country? And what is the foreign policy outlook India must have in a world where economics and politics are coupled? Breaking down complex policymaking issues for a general reader, Wonked! asserts the need for India to have an economic ideology that will strengthen its institutions while thinking about the needs of its citizens in the years to come. Deeply researched, cogent and bridging the divide between conflicting ideologies, this book calls upon policymakers, private sector players and the political establishment to develop a wider consensus on the paths India must pursue in the years to come.
Book Synopsis African Economic Development by : Christopher Cramer
Download or read book African Economic Development written by Christopher Cramer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book challenges conventional wisdoms about economic performance and possible policies for economic development in African countries. Its starting point is the striking variation in African economic performance. Unevenness and inequalities form a central fact of African economic experiences. The authors highlight not only differences between countries, but also variations within countries, differences often organized around distinctions of gender, class, and ethnic identity. For example, neo-natal mortality and school dropout have been reduced, particularly for some classes of women in some areas of Africa. Horticultural and agribusiness exports have grown far more rapidly in some countries than in others. These variations (and many others) point to opportunities for changing performance, reducing inequalities, learning from other policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure, and the legacies of a colonial past. The book rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, but it does pay close attention to the results of policy in more industrialized parts of the world. Seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are - fundamental and enduring - may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development can be expected to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be were certain impediments suddenly removed. The authors criticize a wide range of orthodox and heterodox economists, especially for their cavalier attitude to evidence. Drawing on their own decades of research and policy experience, they combine careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with political economy insights (mainly derived from Kalecki, Kaldor and Hischman) to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment"--

Book Synopsis Black Students in Imperial Britain by : Robert Burroughs
Download or read book Black Students in Imperial Britain written by Robert Burroughs and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book caters for the demand in new black histories by rediscovering several little-known Black people’s experiences in late-Victorian Britain. It centres on The African Institute of Colwyn Bay, or ‘Congo House’, at which almost 90 children and young adults from Africa and its diaspora were enrolled to train as missionaries between 1889 and 1911. Burroughs finds that, though their encounters in Britain were shaped by the racism and paternalism of the late-nineteenth-century civilising mission, the students were not simply the objects of British charity. They were also agents in a culture of evangelical humanitarianism. Some were fully absorbed in the civilising mission, becoming leading missionaries. Others adapted their experiences to new ends, participating in networks of pan-Africanism that questioned race prejudice and colonialism. In their negotiations of the challenges and opportunities at the heart of the empire, the students of Congo House reveal how the global currents of black history shaped the localised cultures of Victorian philanthropy. From racism to pan-Africanism, this study sheds new light on key issues in black British history.

Book Synopsis Borderless Africa by : Francis Mangeni
Download or read book Borderless Africa written by Francis Mangeni and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Continental Free Trade Area, established in 2018, represented a monumental step forward for Africa in terms of meeting longstanding aspirations for greater economic and political integration. But it has nonetheless been met with skepticism in some quarters, both within the continent and beyond. Borderless Africa makes the case for the AfCFTA in an accessible and compelling way, without shying away from technical and academic debates. Francis Mangeni and Andrew Mold take us on a journey through the different dimensions and implications of the AfCFTA, the largest free-trade zone in the world, starting with its underlying economic rationale. Pointing to the numerous historical examples of successful regional integration, they argue that the African continent will need to take on board such lessons as the agreement is implemented. They discuss, too, the more controversial elements of the AfCFTA, including the freedom of movement protocol, contending that this should not be seen as an optional extra, but as an intrinsic part of the accord. Also exploring the role of external partners in the construction of an economically stronger, more united Africa, this fascinating study reveals how the AfCFTA is contributing to sustainable development across the continent.

Book Synopsis Specimens of Bushmen Folklore by : Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Bleek
Download or read book Specimens of Bushmen Folklore written by Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Bleek and published by Daimon. This book was released on 2001 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the long-out-of print classic collection of Bushman tales provides a fascinating look into the life of these little-known people. As Megan Biesele writes in her Foreword: The fact that a family of trained linguists and their associates sat down between 1870 and 1884 with a group of /Xam people who had been temporarily sprung free of imprisonment in Cape Town's Breakwater Prison has immense potential consequences. San people today, like indigenous peoples all over the world, are quietly organizing educational futures for themselves which will make fine use of this record of the intellectual history of their culture. This edition reproduces the English text of the 1911 edition and is richly illustrated with photographs.

Download or read book Ambition written by Emma Ineson and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Be encouraged by Bishop Emma's advice and inspired by her wisdom and humour.' JUSTIN WELBY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY Counting things is very much on the table at the moment. But what is the theology around notions of ambition and success? Why do they sit so uncomfortably in a Christian context? After all, growth is not the preserve of big business when viewed through the lens of the story of God and his people. So, we need to ask, what is right about ambition for the Christian leader? And what were Jesus' views? Inevitably (because everything interesting is paradoxical), success and failure are close bedfellows. The single most successful event in the history of humankind - the victory of love over sin and death - looked very much like one man, naked, shamed and abandoned by most of his followers, hanging on a cross. If we keep a vision of the Kingdom of God at the centre of all we do, we cannot go far wrong. This lively and liberating book includes a brilliant take on Jesus' teaching in 'The Beatitudes for Ambitious Leaders'. Here Emma Ineson describes key spiritual dispositions that will enable us - whether in the church or living out our vocation elsewhere - to do just that.
