Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is He Out There? is an interdisciplinary examination of the Christian reaction to Dawkinss The God Delusion. That reaction has offered a wide range of counter-arguments, among them: that Dawkinss demonstration of how God almost certainly doesnt exist addresses an out-dated conception of God; that science and religion are not conflictual as Dawkins contends and indeed may well be converging upon an understanding of how God acts in the universe; that Dawkinss denigration of the Bible depends on an overly literal reading; and that Dawkins assumes a narrative of progress in which human beings take the place of God in controlling the course of history. Is He Out There? responds to these arguments in the context of current scientific understanding, biblical criticism and philosophy. Paul Laffan demonstrates how the desire to meet the challenge posed by Dawkinss viewpoint has led to the perversion of scientific theories and accepted positions in other important fields of inquiry. It suggests that Christianity is wedded to a God who is the cause of the universe a classical conception of cause that is anachronistic; that denying the Bible was read for most of the Christian era as offering a literal account of divine creation is a significant misrepresentation of doctrinal history; and that a complete dismissal of progress requires the dismissal of scientific achievement. The author considers the extent to which attractive, secular values like tolerance and freedom of opinion are Christian in source and whether moral systems require God to underwrite them. The wide-ranging nature of Is He Out There? not only provides a review of the state of contemporary Christian apology but is a measured address of the arguments put forward in The God Delusion and indeed of the substantive commentary on Dawkinss thesis.

Book excerpt: He went where no Martian ever went before--but would he come out--or had he gone for good?ExcerptThe Professor was congratulating Earth's first visitor from another planet on his wisdom in getting in touch with a cultural anthropologist before contacting any other scientists (or governments, God forbid!), and in learning English from radio and TV before landing from his orbit-parked rocket, when the Martian stood up and said hesitantly, "Excuse me, please, but where is it?"That baffled the Professor and the Martian seemed to grow anxious--at least his long mouth curved upward, and he had earlier explained that it curling downward was his smile--and he repeated, "Please, where is it?"He was surprisingly humanoid in most respects, but his complexion was textured so like the rich dark armchair he'd just been occupying that the Professor's pin-striped gray suit, which he had eagerly consented to wear, seemed an arbitrary interruption between him and the chair--a sort of Mother Hubbard dress on a phantom conjured from its leather. The Professor's Wife, always a perceptive hostess, came to her husband's rescue by saying with equal rapidity, "Top of the stairs, end of the hall, last door."The Martian's mouth curled happily downward and he said, "Thank you very much," and was off.Comprehension burst on the Professor. He caught up with his guest at the foot of the stairs."Here, I'll show you the way," he said."No, I can find it myself, thank you," the Martian assured him.

DeSai covers a plethora of subjects-including car and horse racing, animals, school tales, frightening encounters, shocking dilemmas, and delightful surprises. In the story "Demolition Derby Race" DeSai describes the time her father, Amos, entered the family's pristine, candy-apple red, four-door Dodge into the local demolition derby. "No Sure Winner" tells how twelve-year-old D.J. learned a hard lesson about money and gambling. And "Saved by the Hood Ornament" narrates thirteen-year-old D.J.'s experience being hit by a car. From heartwarming to heartbreaking, More Dory's Stories represent a lifetime of down-to-earth lessons learned-some difficult, some unpleasant, and others that are simply fun. Book excerpt: BLOOD ON THE BLUEGRASS is a novel featuring a Vietnam veteran named Cody Breathett, whose savage killing techniques in battle had earned him the nickname, Bloody BReathett. In Vietnam, he had teamed up with Jack Hollister, a fellow Kentucky native. Together they terrorized and killed countless Vietcong, cutting off the ears of their victims and wore them as ornaments around their necks. Convinces they were psychotic killers, the army gave them medals and sent them home as war heroes. Breathett returned to tobacco farmng and Hillister joined the Kentucky State Police. While working under cover on a drug case, Hollister discovered a three million dollar drug deal that was about to go down. He convinced Breathett to help him rob the drug dealers, and they became instant millionaires. BReathett buys farms and Hollister invests in the stock market. Breathett meets Lisa Wayne, a pretty young Thoroughbred jockey. He pursues and marries her. On the day she plans to tell him she is pregnant, the Hill Hawk motorcycle gang kidnaps her. She is brutally ravished and maimed before they kill her. Bloody Breathett began a self-imposed basic training. When fully prepared, he begins to methodically take his revenge. One by one, in incredibly horrendous fashion he hunts tortures, and kills the gang members. The Briar mode of vengeance dominates this story, softened only by the women that come to love Bloddy Breathett.

Book excerpt: John Lennon was a highly opinionated and controversial figure with a commanding personality and quick wit. And he made a point of living his adventurous life as openly as possible. Whether he was experimenting with LSD, Transcendental Meditation, primal therapy, macrobiotic diets, or recording techniques, the public was on board every step of the way. He spoke candidly about his intense, sometimes tumultuous relationship with Yoko Ono, his split with the Beatles, his squabbles with Paul McCartney, and just about everything else, baring his emotional ups and downs for all to see. By the time he granted his—and this book's—final interview, only hours before his death, he had become one of the most famous people on the planet and an articulate commentator on politics, human relations, and world peace. Lennon on Lennon is an authoritative, chronologically arranged anthology of some of Lennon's most illuminating interviews, spanning the years 1964 to 1980. The majority have not been previously available in print, and several of the most important have not been widely available in any format. Interspersed throughout the book are key quotes from dozens of additional Q&As. Together, this material paints a revealing picture of the artist in his own words while offering a window into the cultural atmosphere of the sixties and seventies.

Retired reporter Marcus Waters made his name as a journalist covering the enigmatic superhero’s five years of cleaning up Chicago’s streets. Then the Kingfisher died, Chicago resumed its violent turmoil, and Marcus slid back into obscurity. But did the Kingfisher really die? And who would take hostages connected to the Kingfisher's past attempts to clean up the streets? With the help of disgraced police officer Lucinda Tillman and a young hacktivist named Wren, Marcus will explore the city's violence, corruption, and chaos to figure out if the vigilante hero died tragically, or gave up hope and abandoned the city—and for the hostages, the clock is ticking.
