Book excerpt: The predominant use of lecturing in introductory STEM classrooms-which perpetuates a stressful, competitive, and unsupportive learning environment-has been identified as one of the primary causes of diminished student motivation and interest, eventually leading to exit from these fields. These effects are exacerbated among women and students of color, who are traditionally underrepresented and underserved in STEM fields. Active learning has been linked to positive cognitive, motivational, and academic outcomes among students at 4-year institutions. However, empirical work examining its application in 2-year colleges is limited. This study investigated the relationship between active learning and community college students' long-term academic success in STEM. To understand how active learning impacts success in STEM, a conceptual framework was created depicting the direct and indirect links between active learning, self-efficacy beliefs in math and science, and academic outcome measures, accounting for student person inputs and contextual factors. Applying structural equation modeling techniques on a longitudinal dataset collected over a period of four years, the study uncovered an underlying mechanism through which active learning contributes to community college students' long-term academic outcomes in STEM. The study revealed the positive but indirect link between active learning and STEM success through the mediating effects of self-efficacy beliefs. The identification of self-efficacy beliefs in math and science as powerful mediating mechanisms highlights the prominent role motivational beliefs play in STEM success and pinpoints active learning as a potentially effective pedagogical approach for stimulating the development of these beliefs. Results of the multiple-group structural equation modeling analyses indicated that the modeled relationships are invariant across gender and racial/ethnic groups. Findings of this study may thus provide insights for policy development and shed light on directions for future research.
