Book excerpt: Thermal and irradiation induced intermixing of uranium silicide reactor fuels with the aluminum cladding is an important consideration in understanding their fission gas and fuel swelling behavior. The authors have used Rutherford backscattering to follow the behavior of an Al thin film on U3Si and U3Si2 during 1.5 MeV Kr ion irradiation at temperatures of 30 and 350 C. After an initial dose during which no intermixing occurs, the Al mixes quickly into U3Si. The threshold dose is believed to be associated with an oxide layer between the Al and the uranium silicide. At 300 C and doses greater than threshold, rates of mixing and aluminide phase growth are extracted.

Book excerpt: SEM observations have shown that irradiation induced interaction of the aluminum cladding with uranium silicide reactor fuels strongly affects both fission gas and fuel swelling behaviors during fuel burn-up. The authors have used ion beam mixing, by 1.5 MeV Kr, to study this phenomena. RBS and the 27Al(p, [gamma]) 28Si resonance nuclear reaction were used to measure radiation induced mixing of Al into U3Si and U3Si2 after irradiation at 300 C. Initially U mixes into the Al layer and Al mixes into the U3Si. At a low dose, the Al layer is converted into UAl4 type compound while near the interface the phase U(Al{sub .93}Si{sub .07})3 grows. Under irradiation, Al diffuses out of the UAl4 surface layer, and the lower density ternary, which is stable under irradiation, is the final product. Al mixing into U3Si2 is slower than in U3Si, but after high dose irradiation the Al concentration extends much farther into the bulk. In both systems Al mixing and diffusion is controlled by phase formation and growth. The Al mixing rates into the two alloys are similar to that of Al into pure uranium where similar aluminide phases are formed.

Book excerpt: Several beam-solid interaction techniques have been developed that can either stand alone or be used in connection with others for materials processing, for fabrication of devices with enhanced electro-optical and mechanical properties, and with enhanced resistance to corrosion and erosion. For example, advances in focused ion beams (FIB) have brought out-of-reach ideas and applications to fruition. This book from MRS focuses on the developments in ion-beam-assisted processing of materials and reviews successful applications of the techniques. Topics include: fundamentals of ion-solid interactions; ion-beam mixing; radiation damage; insulators and wide bandgap materials; polymers; optical materials; plasma and ion-assisted techniques; metals and tribology; focused ion beams; fundamental semiconductor processing and compound semiconductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Nuclear Security provides a comprehensive examination of efforts to secure sensitive nuclear assets and mitigate the risk of nuclear terrorism and other non-state actor threats. It aims to provide the reader with a holistic understanding of nuclear security through exploring its legal, political, and technical dimensions at the international, national, and organizational levels. Recognizing there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nuclear security, the book explores fundamental elements and concepts in practice through a number of case studies which showcase how and why national and organizational approaches have diverged. Although focused on critiquing past and current activities, unexplored yet crucial aspects of nuclear security are also considered, and how gaps in international efforts might be filled. Contributors to the handbook are drawn from a variety of different disciplinary backgrounds and experiences, to provide a wide range of perspectives on nuclear security issues and move beyond the Western narratives that have tended to dominate the debate. These include scholars from both developed and developing nuclear countries, as well as practitioners working in the field of nuclear security in an effort to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Reduced Enrichment Research and Test Reactor (RERTR) program, high density uranium compounds are being evaluated as possible replacements for the fuels currently in use. U3Si and U3Si2 powders dispersed in an Al matrix and roll bonded within 6061 Al alloy clad have performed well under irradiation in the ORR. A consideration of the heats of reaction between the silicides and the Al components of a reactor fuel plate has now been addressed. By following standard quantitative differential thermal analysis (DTA) procedures, it has been demonstrated that neither silicide shows any measurable heat of reaction until the solidus temperature of 6061 (582°C) is exceeded. On heating, the exothermic reaction is quenched by the endothermic change of state as the Al species melt. All detectable events take place in the temperature regime from approx. 580 to approx. 660°C. The heats of reaction per gram of fuel ranged from 304 +- 18 J for samples with 32 vol. % U3Si2 in the fuel zone to 486 +- 54 J for samples containing 45 vol. % U3Si in the fuel zone. 6 references, 11 figures, 7 tables.
