Book excerpt: A grand-scale historical novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Mistress Shakespeare. Born into a first family of Ireland, with royal ties on both sides, Elizabeth Fitzgerald—known as Gera—finds her world overturned when Henry VIII imprisons her father, the Earl of Kildare, and brutally destroys her family. Torn from the home she loves, her remaining family scattered, Gera dares not deny the refuge offered her in England's glittering royal court. There she must navigate ever-shifting alliances even as she nurtures her secret desire for revenge. From County Kildare's lush green fields to London's rough-and-tumble streets and the royal court's luxurious pageantry, The Irish Princess follows the journey of a daring woman whose will cannot be tamed, and who won't be satisfied until she restores her family to its rightful place in Ireland.

Book excerpt: Melkorka is a princess, the first daughter of a magnificent kingdom in medieval Ireland. But all of this is suddenly meaningless when she is kidnapped and taken aboard a Viking slave ship. Thrown into a new and unknown world, amongst people her former country's laws regarded as less than human, Melorka must learn quickly if she is to survive. Taking a vow of silence, however, she finds herself an object of fascination to her captors, and she soon realises that what little power she has may just make a difference. Based on an ancient Icelandic folktale, this is a heart-breaking story of a young girl who must learn to forget all she knows and carve out a place for herself in a new world - all without speaking a word.

Book excerpt: Vertue Rewarded; or, The Irish Princess, A New Novel, was first published in 1693 and has never been reprinted until now, almost 300 years since that first publication. An intriguing feature of the work is that its author is unknown and likely to remain so. Only two copies appear to have survived, one of which is in the Bodleian Library, the other in the British Museum. The present text is taken from the British Museum copy. Set in the year 1690, the story is of a foreign prince serving in the army of King William of Orange, billeted in the town of Clonmel, in Ireland. On his first day in the town, the prince falls heavily in love with a Clonmel girl. He is determined to have an affair with the girl and makes numerous attempts to seduce her. Finally, the girl's virtue is rewarded by the prince's agreeing to marry her, and she becomes an 'Irish Princess'.

Book excerpt: A hero's feats? Ever since he was a baby, Becan's only worry has been his big feet--until his widowed father remarries. His new stepmothr and her three daughters feed him crusts of bread and banish him to work in the fields. So Becan runs away. With the help of his only friend, a magical bull, he defeats a giant, slays a dragon, and rescues a princess. But before she can thank him, Becan disappears, leaving behind him one of his enormous boots. The princess scours the kingdom for the owner of the giant boot. Will Becan's feet give him away? And what will his fate be if they do? Folklorist Shirley Climo retells an age-old Irish tale that is an unusual twist on the popular Cinderella story. Just like his female counterpart, Becan has a mean stepmother and stepsisters. Unlike Cinderella, Becan has large feet and a magical bull for a fairy godmother. He defeats a sword-swinging giant, slays a fire-breathing dragon, and rescues a princess. But before the princess can thank him, he runs off, leaving her with only an enormous boot to aid her in the search for her rescuer. And, as in all Cinderella stories, true love prevails. Expecting a life of luxury, instead, she is captured by Rus raiders and sold into slavery. Eventually, she becomes the property of a Viking man named Hoskuld. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of London and Sarum -- a magnificent epic about love and war, family life and political intrigue in Ireland over the course of seventeen centuries. Like the novels of James Michener, The Princes of Ireland brilliantly interweaves engrossing fiction and well-researched fact to capture the essence of a place. Edward Rutherfurd has introduced millions of readers to the human dramas that are the lifeblood of history. From his first bestseller, Sarum, to the #1 bestseller London, he has captivated audiences with gripping narratives that follow the fortunes of several fictional families down through the ages. The Princes of Ireland, a sweeping panorama steeped in the tragedy and glory that is Ireland, epitomizes the power and richness of Rutherfurd’s storytelling magic. The saga begins in pre-Christian Ireland with a clever refashioning of the legend of Cuchulainn, and culminates in the dramatic founding of the Free Irish State in 1922. Through the interlocking stories of a wonderfully imagined cast of characters -- monks and noblemen, soldiers and rebels, craftswomen and writers -- Rutherfurd vividly conveys the personal passions and shared dreams that shaped the character of the country. He takes readers inside all the major events in Irish history: the reign of the fierce and mighty kings of Tara; the mission of Saint Patrick; the Viking invasion and the founding of Dublin; the trickery of Henry II, which gave England its foothold on the island in 1167; the plantations of the Tudors and the savagery of Cromwell; the flight of the “Wild Geese”; the failed rebellion of 1798; the Great Famine and the Easter Rebellion. With Rutherfurd’s well-crafted storytelling, readers witness the rise of the Fenians in the late nineteenth century, the splendours of the Irish cultural renaissance, and the bloody battles for Irish independence, as though experiencing their momentous impact firsthand. Tens of millions of North Americans claim Irish descent. Generations of people have been enchanted by Irish literature, and visitors flock to Dublin and its environs year after year. The Princes of Ireland will appeal to all of them -- and to anyone who relishes epic entertainment spun by a master.
