Book excerpt: Excerpt from New, Rare and Good Old Irises, 1928 I have given the descriptions of varieties as I have seen them grow in my own garden over a period of years or since their introduction. The color descriptions are based on Ridgeway's Color Standards, in so far as practicable, together with the general color effect in most cases, for ease of interpretation. The height in inches and season of bloom from very early (v. E.) to very late which follow my own ratings, are based on an average of seasons, locations, and soil types. The name of the introducer with date of introduction, and awards at national or similar exhibitions are given following the name of the variety. The rating of the Symposium Committee of the American Iris Society is the figures which immediately follows the name of the variety. Since many varieties have not been rated, I am giving in addition my personal comparative estimation of the different varieties, both for exhibition (e.) and landscape or garden (g.) uses. These ratings are based upon experience of growing the different varieties side by side and a study of the different factors, including growth, effectiveness, poise, height, color, form, size, substance, and distinctive qualities, all of which go to make up a perfect iris for both exhibition and garden purposes. The ratings on the more recent introductions are subject to revision as further experience may bring out their fa'ults, if any, or further demonstrate their superior qualities. I have hesitated to publish these ratings because personal likes and dislikes do enter into such considerations. I have endeavored, however, to deal frankly and accurately with the diflerent varieties and having been urged to publish them hope the suggestions may be helpful, especially to those who may be interested in the new and untried introductions. The reader may ask why an old iris such as Iris King has been placed with the best and most outstanding varieties, while such fine varieties as Hyperion with a higher rating are excluded. The reason is that while Hyperion is a finer individual iris than Iris King in size, form, and height, there are some even better varieties of very similar coloring, while Iris King is still one of the best in its particular color and is, therefore, given the preference in this list. Undoubtedly, some of the newer varieties may demonstrate their superior qualities to such an extent that they may displace some that now seem to be among the best. I welcome suggestions and criticism on these points based upon the experience of others in different locations. Many of them are imported varieties that are being grown under Government Permit and cannot be sold until they are released for distribution by the United States Department of Agriculture; others are still under test, and of others my stock. Is too small to justify listing them this year, although quotations can be made on request. Almost every choice Iris is grown here. If I knew of a fine variety that is not included in my collection I would secure it. The figures given immediately after the name of a variety represent the recent ratings given by the American Iris Society, the first figure being the Exhibition Rating, or the rating as an exhibition flower; the second figure being the Garden Rating, or the rating for its landscape or garden qualities. Those not rated are mostly rare or recently introduced varieties that were not sufficiently well known by the jurors to rate them. You will notice the entire absence of poorly rated varieties in my collection. In the American Iris Society ratings, 100 is considered perfect (no variety is ever voted perfect, as room must always be left for improvement). The official ratings are as follows. We do not get the same net-like venation but we can' approach the color. Gray Morn I introduced for its tone of heliotrope gray and the shape of the flower is often so abominable that I regret the introduction. Thundercloud is also gray-hued but darkly velvety on the falls Circe has a curious curved venation on the haft and blade that always re minds me of cat's whiskers. I find it fascinating, but it is dull in color. For real somberness Valkyrie is my finest at present; the falls are velvety, dark maroon purple, almost black in some lights, and the standards are dull drab. I have failed in my attempts to obtain variegata coloring with height and size, but I am still trying; the intensity of color in Katrinka is fine; Stanley H. White has merit, but I have so strong a vision of what might be that the existing varieties seem below par.
