Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive List of the Newest and Most Distinctive Irises, 1929 It may be said without exaggeration, that color has become a part in our lives as never before. It is expressed most distinctively, and it affects all, more or less, in clothes and environment. This trend toward color harmony may be applied much more to the garden, where a skill full blending of flowers creates a picture of rare loveliness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iris, 1927 Mixtures. 100 for If wanted in quanti ties for mass planting, we can give special prices in named varieties during the summer months. Seedlings. We are growing seedlings from hand pollinated seed of the finest varieties. Only one white variety has been named but a number are under observation, and have been sent to the New York Trial Gardens. Next year the best of these will be distributed. But wehave a great many that are not sufficiently distinct to receive a name and these will be sold at per 100 for those of medium height and per 100 for the taller varieties, 50 or more at the 100 rate. The latter varieties are over 3 feet in height, with branching stem and large flowers. Some have lovely pastel shades and every one is different. We are looking forward to a season of pleasant surprises, as some seedlings blooming for the first time last spring showed a decided improvement in the white and pink tones, and in some bronzy shades. It will take another season of bloom to determine their fitness to be kept. There is nothing so thrilling as walking down a seedling row, studying each new blossom that has. Opened over night and hunting for finer flowers or new colorings. Rating. In a Symposium for 1922, a jury of competent and experienced iris growers placed a rating on most of the iris in general commerce. It proved helpful in many ways, but was not quite complete on many points. For instance, an iris rated at 90 or over might have a very beautiful and large flower, with tall and branching stems, but it increases slowly, or is a shy bloomer, and its value is only for the exhibitor or fancier. Another variety is rated at but a patch of it in the garden is a joy to behold. There are iris for all purposes, and the average person wades through seas of description and tries to find the iris suitable for his or her purpose. An exhibition iris is not always suitable for color effects in the garden. We have a number that answer both requirements and you will find them so marked. So We have not given the A. I. S. Ratings, which other catalogues will show, but one we have worked out in collaboration with Mrs. Silas B. Waters, who has a large collection, and is an acknowledged authority on iris. This rating is based on the good and bad points of the flower and plant as we know it, and represented by cer tain letters and numbers. We did not feel quali fied to pass judgment on some varieties this year, until they have been studied more carefully. This is by no means a perfect rating, but we believe it will prove helpful to other lovers of the iris. We would appreciate very much any comments as to this method of judging, as it will prove helpful in future observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New, Rare, and Good Old Irises: Supplement to Iris Lovers' Guide and Descriptive Catalogue; Retail Price List, Summer 1931-Spring 1932 Due to a carefully planned system of growing the plants, the purchaser receives the benefit, as this economy is reflected in the price. Especially is this true when 5 or more plants of a variety can be used. Garden Clubs or other groups are urged to take advantage of the saving as indicated in the following price schedule. The quantity price of any variety is ascertained by reference to the retail price and then from the table obtaining the price in lots of 5 and 25 or more. The figure after the name of a variety indicates the number of plants that may be ordered at the quantity price given in columns one and two. For example, 1 after Aliquippa 1 which is priced at indicates that as many as 10 plants may be purchased at each as shown in column 1 for a variety; 2 after Allure 2 which is priced at indicates that as many as 25 plants may be purchased at each, as shown in column 2 for a variety; 3 after Ambassadeur 3 indicates that this variety is available in lots of 50 or more at the 25 rate and may be purchased at 25 cents each as shown in column 2 for a 35 cent variety. Varieties not numbered are available in lots of less than 10. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iris, a Select List of Best Varieties, 1924 It is a far cry from the old fashioned flags to the modern creations of scientific hybridization. With the better material for crossing, one may ex peet much better varieties in the future than any found in present collections. No educated man can view a display of the modern iris flowers without some appreciation for their beauty, while souls tuned to the music of flowers gaze upon them in warm admiration. Something of the popularity of the iris in this country may be appreciated when it is stated that the American Iris Society formed with 300 charter members, and now in its sixth year, has over 800 members. We cannot too strongly recommend July and August planting. It is then that plants are at full size and in the best condition for moving, insuring typical blooms at the earliest possible date. Let us ship during July or August, on the date selected by us, so we can give you the best possible value. Our business depends on your good-will and approval. Experience has shown us that July and August plantings do the best. Our methods of packing insure the delivery to you of a vigorous plant with unimpaired vitality, ready to start at once into the autumnal growth which fixes the plant in the ground before winter. We have, therefore, decided that we can fill orders only after our flowering period in June, and not later than November first. Making the best use of Iris in your garden is a matter which can be learned only by experience and observation. It is so much a matter of individuality and personality - yours and your garden and your Iris - that we believe advice from someone not acquainted with these factors is worse than useless. In fact, it is as impractical as medical diagnosis by mail. Even in as simple a matter as time of blooming it is difficult to be accurate for any other locality than one's own - and in a given locality varieties differ more or less from year to year not only in time of blooming but in relation to each other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iris of Quality: Surplus Stock From Private Collection, 1927 The renter, therefore, may enjoy the beauties of the Iris and take them with him when he moves. Iris are adapted to a wide variety of uses in the garden. _they may be used in groups in the perennial border, as isolated clumps in front of shrubbery, or massed in effective color groups in a great variety of posi tions. They may be used as borders for walks or driveways, or planted formally in beds. A little study will enable one to combine the colors in very effective groupings. One might think that in mixed plantings you would have color clashes, but this is not so. They are very effective in mixed plantings. In some cases, however, the true quality of some variety is nullified by planting too close to another of different type. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalog of the Newest, Rarest and Finest Iris, 1927: Accompanied With Some Information About Iris Which May Be of Interest to Iris Lovers Miss Grace Sturtevant is unquestionably our foremost -americ hybridizer. A very considerable number of her introductions at prese are listed in all foreign catalogues; this includes B. Y. Morrison, Avalc Afterglow, Dream, Mme. Cheri, Mother of Pearl, Nancy Orne, Que Caterina, Shekinah. She has a tremendous number of fine Iris to her credit, and all i can do is to call attention to those we consider the finest of them. Go Imperial, is the best yellow, with the sole exception of Am'br Mother of Pearl is known to everyone; Dream, a pink ranks very clo to the top; Tyrian is a wonderful deep claret color, with very velve falls and is one of Miss Sturtevant's masterpieces. We have not be fortunate enough to see all her varieties, but our favorite is Naon which is something like Glamour and quite as good, Rose Madder is beautiful and unusual Iris that does not seem to have its merits sui ciently well known to the public. We are offering this year her ne white called Snow White, which we have never seen, but those who ha say it is a magnificent Iris of beauty and distinction. We would say th the principal characteristics of Miss Sturtevant's Iris seedlings are tremendous variety as to color; clear, rich, beautiful colors and col combinations and style and poise of the flower on the stem. George Yeld of England raises thousands of seedlings, but intr duces very few, but the few he does introduce are of outstanding mer Neptune, 1916, is still a favorite flower and we do not think that it h been superseded. Asia, 1920, is so well known by every Iris lover th comment is unnecessary. Prospero, 1920, is still an outstanding variet Lord of June, 1911, is probably the most popular and best known Ii in the world today.
