Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aramaic is now recognised throughout the world as the language spoken by Christ and the Apostles. Contrary to popular belief, however, it is very much a 'living' language spoken today by the Assyrian peoples in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. It is also heard in Assyrian emigre communities of the US, Europe and Australia. Modern Aramaic or Assyrian is made up of a number of dialects. The two major ones are Swadaya (Eastern) and Turoyo (Western). This unique dictionary and phrasebook incorporates both dialects in a way that illustrates the differences and gives the reader a complete understanding of both. The dialects are presented in an easy-to-read romanised form that will help the reader to be understood.

Book excerpt: A riveting, comprehensive history of the Arab peoples and tribes that explores the role of language as a cultural touchstone This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances. Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia. Mackintosh-Smith reveals how linguistic developments--from pre-Islamic poetry to the growth of script, Muhammad's use of writing, and the later problems of printing Arabic--have helped and hindered the progress of Arab history, and investigates how, even in today's politically fractured post-Arab Spring environment, Arabic itself is still a source of unity and disunity.

As did its predecessor, it covers land, air, and naval forces, primarily but not exclusively from a U.S. perspective, with the welcome emergence of small wars from publishing obscurity. In addition to identifying relevant organizations and associations, Blewett has gathered together the very best in chronologies, bibliographies, biographical dictionaries, indexes, journals abstracts, glossaries, and encyclopedias, each accompanied by a brief descriptive annotation. This work remains a pertinent addition to the general reference collections of public and academic libraries as well as special libraries, government documents collections, military and intelligence agency libraries, and historical societies and museums.

Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, more Europeans visited the Middle East than ever before, as tourists, archaeologists, pilgrims, settler-colonists and soldiers. These visitors engaged with the Arabic language to differing degrees. While some were serious scholars of Classical Arabic, in the Orientalist mould, many did not learn the language at all. Between these two extremes lies a neglected group of language learners who wanted to learn enough everyday colloquial Arabic to get by. The needs of these learners were met by popular language books, which boasted that they could provide an easy route to fluency in a difficult language. Arabic Dialogues explores the motivations of Arabic learners and effectiveness of instructional materials, principally in Egypt and Palestine, by analysing a corpus of Arabic phrasebooks published in nine languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian) and in the territory of twenty-five modern countries. Beginning with Napoleon’s Expédition d’Égypte (1798–1801), it moves through the periods of mass tourism and European colonialism in the Middle East, concluding with the Second World War. The book also considers how Arab intellectuals understood the project of teaching Arabic to foreigners, the remarkable history of Arabic-learning among Yiddish- and Hebrew-speaking immigrants in Palestine, and the networks of language learners, teachers and plagiarists who produced these phrasebooks.

Book excerpt: From February 2005 to March 2006, Navy trauma surgeon Zsolt Stockinger served on a forward operating base in Iraq's Sunni Triangle, where he treated more than a thousand casualties and performed hundreds of surgeries. Throughout his deployment, he recorded his thoughts and experiences in a journal that he occasionally sent to his wife as a way to stay connected. Stockinger's diary offers a unique account of daily military life in Iraq from a surgeon's perspective, from the intense action of rocket attacks and emergency procedures to the creative and often lighthearted ways of filling tedious stretches of down time. Illustrated with 47 photographs, this work provides a realistic portrait of life on base and a powerful perspective on the human carnage of war.

Book excerpt: Book Sketch Whats it like for a former elementary school principal and seminary student to suddenly end up on the mean streets of Haditha? Volunteering for reserve duty in Iraq, Glen Morris assured his wife that, as a colonel, he would be safe behind the walls of a large base and concerned only about the number of emails in his in-box. But soon he found himself outside the wire and getting a firsthand look at the insurgency in volatile al Anbar province. The Babylon Blog is the published form of the internet journal he wrote for his friends and family. Whether patrolling through back alleys with the Grunts, wandering the halls of Saddams palace, or commenting on the chow at Camp Fallujah, he offers an intimate, thoughtful and often humorous look at what its like for an Average Joe to go off to war. Read The Babylon Blog and get a glimpse of life in Iraq for those who serve there. No Endorsements Bio Sketch Glen Morris is more than just a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. While serving as a principal in an inner-city elementary school in San Francisco, he followed the call to a seminary education in preparation for mission work in Asia. Days after graduating, that plan was sidetracked with back-to-back military deployments to Africa and Iraq. An avid traveler, runner and budding surfer, he loves to take photos of the world around him. Glen, his wife Irene, and two young children are now enjoying the suburbs of San Diego while eagerly awaiting Gods next adventure for their lives.
