Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents Iowa's annual inventory results for 2005. Estimates show that Iowa has more than 2.8 million acres of forest land. Total live-tree volume on forest land is 4.0 billion cubic feet (ft3). Ninety-eight percent of forest land is classified as timberland. Oak/hickory is the predominant forest-type group, representing 54 percent of timberland area. Growing-stock volume has risen to an estimated 3.1 billion ft3. Livetree aboveground biomass is 112 million dry tons. In general, Iowa's forests are healthy. However, diseases, including white oak decline and Dutch elm disease, and the threat of invasion from exotic species such as emerald ash borer and nonnative plants are a concern when assessing the health of Iowa's forests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents the results of the most recent five annual panels (2001- 2005) of Indiana's forest resources. Since 2003, total forest land area has increased by approximately 175,000 acres. As in every inventory since 1950, the oak/hickory type is the largest forest type on the landscape, making up more than 58 percent of all forested land. Softwoods make up approximately 3 percent of Indiana's forested acreage. The net volume of growing stock on timberland totaled 8.2 billion cubic feet in 2005, more than triple the 2.5 billion cubic feet estimated during the 1950 inventory. The invasive tree species tree-of-heaven continues to threaten forest health, averaging at least one tree for every acre of Indiana's forest land.

Book excerpt: The annual forest inventory of Wisconsin continues, and this document reports 2001-05 moving averages for most variables and comparisons between 2000 and 2005 for growth, removals, and mortality. Other resource tables can be generated through the Forest Inventory Mapmaker website at http: //ncrs2.fs.fed.us/4801/fiadb/index.htm. Estimates from this inventory show a total of 16.1 million acres of forest land in the State. The estimate of total net volume of all-live trees on forest land is 22.3 billion cubic feet (ft3). In Wisconsin, timberland area totals 15.9 million acres, and net growing-stock volume on timberland is 20.0 billion ft3. All-live, aboveground tree biomass on timberland is estimated at 597 million dry tons. Between 2000 and 2005, the average annual net growth of growing stock on timberland was 605.7 million ft3 per year. Average annual removals of growing stock totaled 362.5 million ft3 per year. Mortality was 176.4 million ft3 per year. These estimates generally show a healthy, growing forest despite more than 222,000 acres of forest that were defoliated by the jack pine budworm in 2005

Book excerpt: Governments and civil society in Latin America and the Caribbean should be well informed about the potential costs and benefits of combating climate change, their policy options over the next decades, and the global context for these policy decisions. At the same time, the global community needs to be better informed about the unique perspective of the Latin American and Caribbean region: problems the region will face, its potential contributions toward combating global warming, and how to maximize this potential while continuing to maintain growth and reduce poverty. This book, a companion volume to Low Carbon, High Growth: Latin American Responses to Climate Change, seeks to help fill both these needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a uniquely comprehensive overview of our current knowledge on tropical montane cloud forests. 72 chapters cover a wide spectrum of topics including cloud forest distribution, climate, soils, biodiversity, hydrological processes, hydrochemistry and water quality, climate change impacts, and cloud forest conservation, management, and restoration. The final chapter presents a major synthesis by some of the world's leading cloud forest researchers, which summarizes our current knowledge and considers the sustainability of these forests in an ever-changing world. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge concerning cloud forest occurrence and status, as well as the biological and hydrological value of these unique forests. The presentation is academic but with a firm practical emphasis. It will serve as a core reference for academic researchers and students of environmental science and ecology, as well as practitioners (natural resources management, forest conservation) and decision makers at local, national, and international levels.
