Book excerpt: The investigation of the elementary reactions of reactive intermediate species began about half a centruy ago with the advent of free radical kinetics as an active area of chemical research. In spite of the relatively greater ease of detection of a species carrying an electrical charge, and the fact that organic chemists had for decades postulated mechanisms involving ionic intermediates, the systematic study of the elementary reactions of ions was delayed for more than twenty years after the first beginnings of free radical kinetics. Even at this writing, in 1978, the word "kinetics" is considered by many chemists to be synomomous with "kinetics of neutral species". Yet in spite of the relatively late start and separation from the mainstream of kinetics, the field of ion physics and chemistry is fluorishing, and growing at an ever faster pace. Instrumentalists devise ever more sophisticated apparatuses with capabilities of delving into nearly every aspect of the interactions between ions and molecules. Even satellites orbiting the earth are now being used effectively to determine rate coefficients of ionospheric ion-neutral reactions, some of which can not as yet be measured in the laboratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a few faint stirrings of interest in ion-molecule reactions during the early days of mass spectrometry, the subject was almost completely neglected for many years. There was a renascence of interest in the subject following pioneering experiments by Tal'roze in Russia and independently by Steven son and Schissler and Field, Franklin, and Lampe in this country. Since that time, interest in the subject has continued to grow and the number of papers published to expand almost exponentially during the past 15 years. The result is a body of literature that is now almost beyond any single individual's capacity for encompassing in his reading and research activities. Thus, it seemed timely to prepare a book giving in some detail a comprehen sive review of the field. Ideally, such a book would be written by one or possibly two authors. Unfortunately, the sheer bulk and variety of the studies of ion-molecule reactions has made it impractical for a single person to prepare a book on the subject in a time that would permit it to be issued before the material covered was obsolete. Consequently, the only practical, although surely not the ideal, solution is to issue a multiauthor volume. The present book represents our best efforts to accomplish this goal. We have secured from 18 authors material representing the most advanced work in the field and the resulting compilation is presented herein.

Book excerpt: Ion Mobility Spectrometry IMS as provided the US Army with capabilities for ultrasensitive detection of chemical warfare agents and this technology is undergoing continued development and refinement today as a miniaturized detector of warfare agents. The basis for response in this technology is gas phase ion chemistry at ambient atmosphere; however, no broad framework has existed for understanding this chemistry and no predictive ans interpretative capabilities have existed for mobility spectra. This has meant that a new chemical agent deployed against US soldiers could conceivably be unrecognized by existing methods. A comprehensive model for the prediction and interpretation of mobility spectra was created here and tools are available to understand and predict spectra for the first time in history of modern analytical mobility spectrometry. Predictive capabilities are rooted in assessments of ion stability, ion lifetimes, times for ion drift, temperature and moisture. Interpretative capabilities were attained through neural networks and spectral assignments succeeded on the basis of previously uncharacterized fragmentation of ions at ambient atmosphere. The results from this work demonstrated the possibility that an unknown or unfamiliar chemical can be categorized or recognized by chemical class.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pulsed mass spectrometer is described which was constructed for the measurement of rate constants of ion-molecule reactions at thermal energies. The mass spectrometer could be operated with ion source pressures up to 10 torr. The reactions studied were condensation and attachment reactions which can only be observed at high pressures. Reactions of millitorr traces of methane in 3.5 torr of krypton were first studied to check the pulsing technique. The values of the rate constants for reactions (1) and (2) (both 1.0x10[superscript -9] cc/molecule sec.) were found to be close to previously [scientific equations] determined values and thus the validity of the pulse technique could be established. The ionic condensation reactions (3) and (4) were studied in the xenon-sensitized ionization of ethylene to gain information on the radiolysis of ethylene. The values for the rate constants k[subscript n] [scientific equations] were found to agree with values which had been estimated from results of a previous technique in which the reaction times were not well known k[subscript ] = 2.1x10[superscript -9], k[subscript 4] = 4.35x10[superscript -12] and k[subscript 6] = 1.14x10[superscript -12] (cc/molecule sec.). The values k[subscript k] for reaction (4) were measured as [scientific equations]. These had not been previously measured. The rapid decrease of rate constant with increasing ionic size was explained in terms of the + ion structure. The effect of Xe[superscript +] on the stabilization of the condensation product C[subscript 4]H[subscript 8][superscript +] was observed. Ethylene pressures were varied from 1x10-13] to 0.5 torr and xenon pressures from 0.5 to 8 torr. The rate constants and equilibrium constant for the attachment reaction (5), which appears to be of aeronomic interest, were [scientific equation] measured over the pressure range of 1 to 8 torr at temperatures from 298 to 341°K. The reaction was found to have third order kinetics. The rate constant for the forward reaction was measured as 2.90x10[superscript -30] cc[superscript 2] /molecule[superscript 2] sec. at 298°K with a negative activation energy of 2.0 kcal/mole. The reverse rate constant was 2,44x10[superscript -13] cc/molecule sec. at 298°K. The values of the equilibrium constant 0.385 (standard state 1 torr), entropy -22.4 cal/mole deg. and enthalpy -9.98 kcal/mol. agree vejry well with previous results obtained under equilibrium conditions. Attachment reactions in nitrogen v/ere studied at pressures from 0.4 to 3.6 torr at temperatures from 297 to 420°K. A forward rate constant for the attachment (6) was measured as 8.3x10[superscript -29] cc[superscript 2] /molecule[superscript 2] sec. at 298°K with a negative activation energy [scientific equation] of 2.3 kcals/mole. These values support previous observations. The equilibrium constant could not be measured. Under identical conditions as those used above/ the attachment reaction (7) displayed second order kinetics. The [scientific equation] rate constant was measured as 1.5x10[superscript -12] cc/molecule second. No temperature dependence was observed. The rate constants and equilibrium constants for the oxygen and nitrogen reactions were compared by means of theoretical equations.

Book excerpt: Studies of ions arriving at the orifice of a sampling probe from a plasma produced by an electrodeless discharge were made primarily by the use of a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Extensive investigation of the dependence of the relative ion intensities on the discharge conditions (particularly the pressure) and of the relative ionic composition as a function of the energy of the ions issuing from the orifice of the sampling probe were made. The results indicate that the ions collected and observed are formed in a narrow region in front of the probe orifice and that these ions gain most of their energy from the electric field of the sheath in a distance that is much less than a reaction mean free path. The collected and observed ions were found to originate in a distance of approximately one millimeter from the probe orifice. The average reaction time was found to be a few tenths of a microsecond and independent of the vessel geometry and dimensions. The average reaction time was relatively insensitive to changes in pressure. They were found to be reasonably constant for ions in several different gases and an attempt was made to relate them to the mean electron energy and the electron density. The observed reaction rate constants in the plasma were in reasonable agreement with those reported from electron impact sources. (Author).
