This book was released on 1989 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of a variety of metal complexes, typically occurring in solutions and effluents derived from the processing of gold, is described. The method makes use of reverse-phase ion-interaction chromatography, with an acetonitrile eluent containing tetrabutylammonium hydroxide as the pairing reagent and a neutral phosphate buffer as the inorganic modifier. Individual metal complexes occurring in a process or tailings solution can be identified and their cyanide content reliably estimated. The simultaneous determination of 'free' cyanide in waste waters, which allows an estimate of the 'total' cyanide concentration, was achieved by the conversion of the cyanide to the silver cyanide complex, chromatographic separation, and the use of calibration graphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bacterial consortium capable of utilizing metal-cyanides as a source of nitrogen was used to develop a microbiological process for the detoxification of silver-cyanide from electroplating wastewater. When the treatment was carried out in a 27-l rotating biological contactor (RBC) in continuous mode, the system could achieve > 99·5% removal of 0.1 mmol l-1 silver-cyanide (≈ 5 mg l-1 cyanide and 10 mg l-1 silver) in 10 h with sugarcane molasses (0.1 ml l-1) as carbon source. The silver ions set free during biodegradation were efficiently adsorbed by the bacterial biomass. The RBC-treated effluent was found to be safe for discharge into the environment, as confirmed by chemical analysis and fish bioassay studies.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASTM Committee D-19 on Water has recently published a method for the determination of free cyanide in water and wastewater by microdiffusion. This method (ASTM Method for the Determination of Free Cyanide in Water and Wastewater by Microdiffusion [ASTM D 4282-83]) is based on adjusting a sample in a microdiffusion cell to pH 6.0. All cyanides present that can form hydrogen cyanide (HCN) are defined as free cyanide by this method. The HCN is allowed to diffuse for 4 h into the center chamber of the microdiffusion cell, which contains sodium hydroxide. The cyanide ion thus formed is chlorinated and then reacted with pyridine-barbituric acid. A colorimetric measurement is made to determine the cyanide level. The round robin data obtained show percent biases of -1.9, -5.0, and -4.2% at concentrations of 32, 80, and 144 ?g/L of CN-, respectively, in Reagent Type II water. Data are shown from the original investigation that established the method parameters. Additional pertinent work is documented.

Activities ranging from agriculture to mining have had a bearing on the quality of water that they impact. Several studies assessing such impacts have been conducted at local and global scales over the years. This book, consisting of contributions by authors in various water-related fields, delves into some approaches that are used to understand and/or to improve water quality, and these include assessment of water chemistry, biomonitoring, modelling and water treatment. This book will be useful to environmental scientists, water professionals, researchers, academics and students.

Bits of gold were found in Spanish caves that were used by Paleolithic people around 40,000 B.C. Gold is the "child of Zeus," wrote the Greek poet Pindar. The Romans called the yellow metal aurum ("shining dawn"). Gold is the first element and first metal mentioned in the Bible, where it appears in more than 400 references. This book provides the most thorough and up-to-date information available on the extraction of gold from its ores, starting with the miner alogy of gold ores and ending with details of refining. Each chapter con cludes with a list of references including full publication information for all works cited. Sources preceded by an asterisk (*) are especially recom mended for more in-depth study. Nine appendices, helpful to both students and operators, complement the text. I have made every attempt to keep abreast of recent technical literature on the extraction of gold. Original publications through the spring of 1989 have been reviewed and cited where appropriate. This book is intended as a reference for operators, managers, and designers of gold mills and for professional prospectors. It is also designed as a textbook for extractive metallurgy courses. I am indebted to the Library of Engineering Societies in New York, which was the main source of the references in the book. The assistance of my son, Panos, in typing the manuscript is gratefully acknowledged.

The basic geochemical processes are discussed with respect to mobility in the environment and impact as well as methods to derive guidelines for heavy metals. Remediation focuses on currently available methods to treat contaminated sediments and soils. In addition, it considers the concept of geochemical engineering for remediation of large areas contaminated by metals. A number of case studies of polluted sediments and soils and their environmental impact highlight the principles discussed in the first two sections.

Book excerpt: Water and waste management covers the design, building and operation of plants for water treatment and supply, sewerage, wastewater treatment and disposal, and solid waste treatment and disposal. Since the last edition in 2002 there has been an increasing importance on the issues reflecting climate change. This is particularly important when the result of this change must be ‘managed’ and ‘controlled’ to maintain an amenity such as water supply. This new edition includes many new entries on the topics of stormwater management and flood management, as well as the new EU Directives that cover this field. With over 7000 terms, this dictionary encompasses the most recent terminology on water and waste management. It is a handy reference for consultants, contractors and professional engineers as well as academics and students who need a quick definition to technical terms.
