Book excerpt: Founded on the perceptual tradition, self-concept theory, and an emerging view of human development called "invitational theory," this book offers a fresh approach for today's counselors. The authors cover the skills and techniques required of the counselor, and they demonstrate the wyas in which the counselor's beliefs and attitudes about people--including trust, respect, optimism, and internationality--are paramount in enabling the client to become his/her best self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the theory and practice of the invitational learning model as it applies to school counseling and development. Invitational learning is a paradigm for personal and professional functioning, and for organizational restructuring, based on four values regarding the nature of people and their potential and the nature of professional helping: respect, trust, optimism, and intentionality. Part I of the book develops the theory of invitational learning in five chapters which: define invitational learning (chapter 1); discuss foundations of invitational learning (chapter 2); identify four levels of functioning (chapter 3); explore the five "powerful P's" of places, policies, programs, processes, and people (chapter 4); and explain the "Four Corner Press" of being personally and professionally inviting with oneself and others (chapter 5). Part II surveys the practice of invitational learning through seven essays by separate authors describing their experience in institutions or programs that employ the invitational learning model: (1) "The Baltimore County Guidance and Counseling Experience" (Donald E. McBrien); (2) "The Furman University Center for Excellence Experience" (Judy Lehr); (3) "The East Davidson High School Experience" (Debbie Chance); (4) "The Kansas Elementary School Curriculum Experience" (John H. Wilson); (5) "The Affton School District Experience" (Gary C. Benedict); (6) "The University of South Carolina Adjunct Instructor Experience" (Cheryl French Stehle); and (7) "The Sugar Loaf School Experience" (Joel Blackburn). Forty-eight references are included, and the inviting school checklist is appended, along with an Honor Roll of inviting schools. (TE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanism is considered by many to be the foundation for the values and practices of counseling. This book explores and presents current counseling issues from a humanistic perspective, providing a valuable resource for counselors and therapists seeking effective approaches, founded on humanistic principles, to use in their practice. Each chapter describes the significance of a specific counseling issue, reviews the humanistic literature on this issue, discusses the theoretical model provided by a humanistic perspective, and concludes with applications and implications for practitioners. Situations considered include, among others, marital/couples counseling, multicultural counseling, and healing trauma, all of which have been shown to benefit from the use of humanistic approaches. Applications in educational settings, such as addressing school violence, working with at-risk youth, and counseling in college and university settings, are also discussed. The book concludes with a section on uses of humanistic approaches in counselor education and training. After reading this book, practitioners will be inspired to advocate for counseling’s holistic and empowering approach to helping all individuals across the lifespan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invitational Leadership is a fresh and innovative model based on a single theoretical framework. The model shifts from emphasizing control and dominance to one that focuses on connectedness, cooperation, and communication. Based on sound philosophical and psychological assumptions, Invitational Leadership has been tested and successfully applied by leaders in numerous fields, including administration, business, nursing, dentistry, counseling, and other professions. Invitational Leadership is the basis for the International Alliance for Invitational Education, a network of over a thousand professionals from all 50 states as well as Great Britain, Canada, China, South Africa, and countries throughout Central and South America. William Purkey and Betty Siegel have written much more than a guidebook to becoming a healthier and more effective leader; they proffer a radically profound, compelling argument that it is time for people in positions of authority to forge a new kind of relationship with others based on dialogue, respect and collaboration. This insightful work is long overdue in an age of “might makes right,” and contains great wisdom in promoting solid values found in various democratic and spiritual organizations. Supervisors and coaches, CEO’s and shop stewards, managers and parents—anyone and everyone who deals with others, take notice. This is a truly inspirational book in its invitation for all people to join together in a shared vision of promise and greatness.
