Book Synopsis An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics by : Béla Bajnok
Download or read book An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics written by Béla Bajnok and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This undergraduate textbook promotes an active transition to higher mathematics. Problem solving is the heart and soul of this book: each problem is carefully chosen to demonstrate, elucidate, or extend a concept. More than 300 exercises engage the reader in extensive arguments and creative approaches, while exploring connections between fundamental mathematical topics. Divided into four parts, this book begins with a playful exploration of the building blocks of mathematics, such as definitions, axioms, and proofs. A study of the fundamental concepts of logic, sets, and functions follows, before focus turns to methods of proof. Having covered the core of a transition course, the author goes on to present a selection of advanced topics that offer opportunities for extension or further study. Throughout, appendices touch on historical perspectives, current trends, and open questions, showing mathematics as a vibrant and dynamic human enterprise. This second edition has been reorganized to better reflect the layout and curriculum of standard transition courses. It also features recent developments and improved appendices. An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics is ideal for those seeking a challenging and engaging transition to advanced mathematics, and will appeal to both undergraduates majoring in mathematics, as well as non-math majors interested in exploring higher-level concepts. From reviews of the first edition: Bajnok’s new book truly invites students to enjoy the beauty, power, and challenge of abstract mathematics. ... The book can be used as a text for traditional transition or structure courses ... but since Bajnok invites all students, not just mathematics majors, to enjoy the subject, he assumes very little background knowledge. Jill Dietz, MAA Reviews The style of writing is careful, but joyously enthusiastic.... The author’s clear attitude is that mathematics consists of problem solving, and that writing a proof falls into this category. Students of mathematics are, therefore, engaged in problem solving, and should be given problems to solve, rather than problems to imitate. The author attributes this approach to his Hungarian background ... and encourages students to embrace the challenge in the same way an athlete engages in vigorous practice. John Perry, zbMATH
Book Synopsis Modern Instrumentation by : G Silverman
Download or read book Modern Instrumentation written by G Silverman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern science and engineering relies heavily on understanding computer hardware and software in order to make effective use of these tools in the laboratory and industrial environments. The authors of Modern Instrumentation: A Computer Approach have succeeded in producing a highly readable source that will serve both newcomers to the field as well as experienced professionals. Including both fundamentals and applications, the book first describes the role of the computer in instrument systems and provides numerous practical examples. The second part of the book explores specific software packages and their capabilities for applications such as, instrument design and simulation, data acquisition, data processing, and the potential of artificial intelligence in instrument design. Because of the full integration of theory with practical applications of leading software packages, this book is an extremely useful reference for those who use computer-based instrument technology for data acquisition and who are involved with hardware or software development for laboratory and process control.

Book Synopsis Invitation to Geometry by : Z. A. Melzak
Download or read book Invitation to Geometry written by Z. A. Melzak and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for students of many different backgrounds with only a modest knowledge of mathematics, this text features self-contained chapters that can be adapted to several types of geometry courses. Only a slight acquaintance with mathematics beyond the high-school level is necessary, including some familiarity with calculus and linear algebra. This text's introductions to several branches of geometry feature topics and treatments based on memorability and relevance. The author emphasizes connections with calculus and simple mechanics, focusing on developing students' grasp of spatial relationships. Subjects include classical Euclidean material, polygonal and circle isoperimetry, conics and Pascal's theorem, geometrical optimization, geometry and trigonometry on a sphere, graphs, convexity, and elements of differential geometry of curves. Additional material may be conveniently introduced in several places, and each chapter concludes with exercises of varying degrees of difficulty.

Book excerpt: Bruce has created a work totally unique among books of this type. He chose to number his chapters with prime numbers and cover material not seen anywhere else. Particularly interesting are his chapters on digit patterns and primes forming triangles. Nearly half of the length of the book is devoted to eleven (a prime number) chapters of lists of primes. Here, the reader will find a delightful and motley mélange of unlikely subjects, many with clever titles, and all alphabetically arranged. Incl

Book Synopsis Numbers and Functions by : Victor H. Moll
Download or read book Numbers and Functions written by Victor H. Moll and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New mathematics often comes about by probing what is already known. Mathematicians will change the parameters in a familiar calculation or explore the essential ingredients of a classic proof. Almost magically, new ideas emerge from this process. This book examines elementary functions, such as those encountered in calculus courses, from this point of view of experimental mathematics. The focus is on exploring the connections between these functions and topics in number theory and combinatorics. There is also an emphasis throughout the book on how current mathematical software can be used to discover and interesting properties of these functions. The book provides a transition between elementary mathematics and more advanced topics, trying to make this transition as smooth as possible. Many topics occur in the book, but they are all part of a bigger picture of mathematics. By delving into a variety of them, the reader will develop this broad view. The large collection of problems is an essential part of the book. The problems vary from routine verifications of facts used in the text to the exploration of open questions. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis The Best of Pascal by : Blaise Pascal
Download or read book The Best of Pascal written by Blaise Pascal and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was a French mathematician, physicist and religious philosopher, who laid the foundation for the modern theory of probabilities. Starting in 1657, Pascal began to write notes that would be posthumously organized and published as the Pensées ("Thoughts"). In this, his most famous work, Pascal often writes with great philosophical profundity about his position on faith, the human condition, the meaning of life, the way to happiness, and other philosophical and theological questions. The most often cited portion of the collection is Pascal's famed "Wager," in which he states that it is more advantageous for religious skeptics to embrace a belief in God as they ultimately have more to lose if the existence of God, in particular the Christian God, is revealed after death. In this book are collected the most profound and thought-provoking passages from the Pensées, along with occasional explanation and commentary by Darrell Wright.
