Book Synopsis Tax Incentives for Private Investment in Developing Countries by : Robert Anthoine
Download or read book Tax Incentives for Private Investment in Developing Countries written by Robert Anthoine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide within a single volume a comparative analysis of the tax laws of developed countries bearing upon direct private investment in developing countries, and a representative sample of developing country laws bearing upon the receipt of such investment. This study was initiated by the Tax Committee of the Business Section of the International Bar Association under the leadership of Jean-Claude Goldsmith of the Paris Bar. I undertook to act as the reporter, to browbeat colleagues in other countries to write national reports, and to provide the reporter's overview statement. This report includes studies of fourteen developed countries prepared by national reporters and summaries of five other developed country laws. Note worthy are the detailed examinations of the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany and of Japan, the two developed countries that have provided the most comprehensive system of incentives for private investment in developing countries. Also contained herein are reports from eight developing countries, including a thorough examination of the laws of Brazil. Attention is paid in the developed country reports not only to those tax provisions that act as in inducement to foreign investment but also to those that favor domestic investment and hence act as a disincentive to foreign investment. Relevant double taxation agreements are discussed, and other aspects such as exchange control and government grants are also mentioned.
Book Synopsis Investment Incentives and Performance Requirements by : Stephen E. Guisinger
Download or read book Investment Incentives and Performance Requirements written by Stephen E. Guisinger and published by Praeger Publishers. This book was released on 1985-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the policies of governments and countries toward direct foreign investment in both developed and developing countries. A team of consultants to the World Bank addresses three broad questions regarding foreign investment: Do countries compete for foreign investment? Are host country incentives effective in attracting foreign investment? Do performance requirements imposed by host countries alter either investment or operational decisions of foreign investors? To answer these questions, both government officials in ten countries and representatives of more than thirty multinational companies were interviewed. In addition, seventy-four investment projects in the automobile, computer, food products, and petrochemical industries were selected for intensive review.

Book Synopsis The Development of International Investment Law by : Yusuf Caliskan
Download or read book The Development of International Investment Law written by Yusuf Caliskan and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation analyses developments in the international regulation of foreign direct investment (FDI). The international legal framework of investment encompasses numerous binding or non-binding legal instruments, including customary international law, bilateral investment treaties, and international organizations' decisions and resolutions. The rules established by the international legal framework become effective and significant when they are able to be adapted by appropriate and compatible domestic law frameworks. Through analyzing the Turkish foreign investment regulations and policies, this study concludes that there is a successful and complex interaction between international rules and domestic rules on FDI. Like many developing countries, since the 1980s Turkey has revamped its FDI regulations in response to changes and developments in international investment law. This interaction will reach its culmination, if there is a comprehensive multilateral agreement on investment. This dissertation examines failures of the OECD MAI draft treaty since there are lessons to be learned from the MAI negotiations. Thus, it makes some recommendations both in relation to the substance and the procedure for a possible future negotiation of multilateral investment agreement.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Industrial Development in Nigeria by : Oyeyemi Adegbite
Download or read book Perspectives on Industrial Development in Nigeria written by Oyeyemi Adegbite and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a critical review of Nigeria’s attempts to achieve rapid industrial development since independence from Britain in 1960. It details the issues, challenges, and hard choices confronted by Nigerian political leadership and highlights the reasons why the country ultimately failed to achieve industrial take-off in spite of its abundant human and material resources. Chapters take a retrospective look at government industrial development policies and programs, including the steel industry, agro-allied and forest-based industries, and the industrial estate development program. The book also discusses tariff and trade policies, incentives and disincentives to foreign direct investment (FDI) in the manufacturing sector, and small and medium enterprise (SME) development. The book concludes with a look at the recent drive towards regional integration as well as the potential impact of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the European Union and sixteen countries of West Africa. Providing an exhaustive history of Nigeria’s economic and industrial development, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of African economics, development studies, and industrial organization, as well as policy makers in both the public and private sectors.
