Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Chile addresses all aspects of foreign direct investment in Chile and is very timely since the economy of Chile is growing at a rapid pace. It is considered to be a model in Latin America. In the past few years, foreign investment in Chile has been transformed into a highly significant macroeconomic variable. Indeed, the phenomenon of foreign investment has enticed companies from over sixty countries, representing all the continents. Without a doubt, the impact foreign investment has had on the country's economic development is significant. In December 1994, Chile was formally invited by the United States, Canada and Mexico to join the NAFTA. Negotiations leading to Chile's participation in the NAFTA are expected to begin in the near future. This development will clearly yield many benefits for Chile. First and foremost, this development, acting in concert with the political and economic stability of Chile, will serve as an impetus for more companies, particularly those of American origin, to invest in Chile. This book analyzes the national legal norms of Chile, offering a very useful perspective on the legal regulations of each sector of the economy in general, and on foreign investment in particular.

Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, the world celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, which connected the world’s two largest oceans and signaled America’s emergence as a global superpower. It was a miracle, this path of water where a mountain had stood—and creating a miracle is no easy thing. Thousands lost their lives, and those who survived worked under the harshest conditions for only a few silver coins a day. From the young "silver people" whose back-breaking labor built the Canal to the denizens of the endangered rainforest itself, this is the story of one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, as only Newbery Honor-winning author Margarita Engle could tell it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile has a large but relatively illiquid stock market. Global factors such as global risk appetite and monetary policy in advanced economies are key cyclical determinants of liquidity in Chilean equities. Evidence from a cross-section of emerging markets suggests strong protection of minority shareholders can help improve stock market liquitidity. Currently, illiquid in Chilean may have to pay 31⁄2 percent more as cost of equity. Corporate governance should be improved, namely through the adoption of a stewardship code.

Book Synopsis Foreign Investment Strategies in Restructuring Economies by : John Kline
Download or read book Foreign Investment Strategies in Restructuring Economies written by John Kline and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1992-08-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restructuring economies in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere are abandoning their hostility to foreign enterprises and adopting policies to attract international investment. This book examines corporate experiences in Chile, one of the first nations to move successfully from a statist economy to an open market system using privatization, debt conversion, and liberal trade and investment policies. Drawing from research on over seventy foreign corporations, the book compares investment strategies used to assess risk and exploit business opportunities under conditions of fundamental economic change. Case studies describe how and why firms selected different financing, management, employment, production, and marketing approaches in establishing or expanding their operations. After a brief historical review, the book examines key policy decisions in the 1980s that shaped Chile's new economy. Case studies are then analyzed by sector, covering mining and energy, nontraditional exports (forestry, fishing, and agribusiness), banking and insurance, and other industries including computers, telecommunications, chemicals, electrical goods, automotive products, foods and beverages, and pharmaceuticals. Summary chapters relate these learning experiences to broader strategic issues such as ownership and control, financing methods, technology transfer, trade policy, labor relations, taxation, regulatory reform, and coordinating global corporate operations. This book presents cumulative learning experiences useful for business executives and public officials who must develop new foreign investment strategies, as well as scholars and students interested in the role of foreign investment in developing countries.
Book Synopsis To Bet or Not to Bet by : Mr.Fabio Comelli
Download or read book To Bet or Not to Bet written by Mr.Fabio Comelli and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strand of research documents Chile’s copper dependence hence significant exposure to terms of trade shocks. Copper prices’ sharp decline and forecast uncertainty since the end of the commodity super-cycle has rekindled the debate on Chile’s adjustment capacity to external shocks. Following Malz (2014), this paper builds a time-varying measure of copper price uncertainty using options contracts. VAR analysis shows that the investment response to an uncertainty shock of average magnitude in the sample is strong and persistent: the cumulative fall in investment from trend at a one-year horizon ranges 2–5.8 percentage points; and it takes between 11⁄2 and 2 years for investment to return to its trend level. Empirical ranges depend on alternative definitions for investment, uncertainty, and options’ maturing time.

This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades, Chile has made FDI an essential part of its national development strategy. Chile's sound, market-oriented policies have created significant opportunities for foreign investors to participate in the country's steady economic growth. Chile's business climate is generally straightforward and transparent. Foreign investors receive treatment similar to Chilean nationals, and there is no overall economic or industrial strategy that has discriminatory effects on foreign investors or foreign-owned investments. A broad political consensus on the advantages of foreign investment means that, despite the currently ongoing replacement of part of its regulatory framework, the favorable orientation of Chile's policies toward FDI is unlikely to suffer significant changes.
