Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the widely-held view of the merits of the 'bank-based' German system of finance for investment, and shows that this view is not supported by evidence from the post-war period. The institutional features of the German system are such that universal banks have control of voting rights at shareholders' meetings due to proxy votes, and they also have representation on companies' supervisory boards. These features are claimed to have two main benefits. One is that the German system reduces asymmetric information problems, enabling banks to supply more external finance to firms at a lower cost, and thus increasing investment. The other is that German banks are able to mould and control managements of firms on behalf of shareholders, and thus ensure that firms are run efficiently. This book assesses whether empirical evidence backs up these claims, and shows that the merits of the German system are largely myths.

Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 7.5, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: The following study examines the performance of mutual funds investing in small cap companies in the period from 1990 until 2013. Therefore, funds investing in small companies in Germany are tested on their ability to deliver risk-adjusted abnormal returns. The returns are risk-adjusted according to Fama French (1996) three-factor model, Carhart four-factor model and the liquidity adjusted five-factor model of Pastor and Stambaugh (2003). A separate examination of the internet crisis 2000 until 2003 and the financial crisis period 2008 until 2013 is done, to assess the ability of fund managers in isolation to examine their results in situations when their skills are most needed. On average, I conclude that fund managers, investing in the small capitalization segment in Germany, are not able to outperform the market even before fees.

Book excerpt: Real estate is the biggest real asset class in an economy, and Germany is the biggest economy in Europe. This implies opportunities as well as specific risks for investors and policy makers. As the German real estate markets have by and large been spared severe disruptions in the course of the economic crisis, many questions arise for investors and academics alike. What are the key institutional characteristics of the German real estate markets that make it different? What are the short and long-term drivers of demand and supply? Which regional and functional market segments are most likely to outperform in the next few years? What are the most important pitfalls for investors in Germany? This book gives answers to these and many more questions. The editors have invited a broad range of extensively knowledgeable practitioners and academics from across the relevant real estate spectrum, i.e. economic, legal, tax, planning and financing issues, to express their views. There is no better English publication that gives such a profound and simultaneously entertaining overview of Germany’s real estate markets.

This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Essen (FOM Hochschule), language: English, abstract: This paper investigates, how private investors in Germany were influenced by the pandemic regarding their asset allocation. It presents a study that investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the asset allocation of private investors in Germany. For this purpose, empirical data is collected by means of a survey and interesting results are recorded. As the markets acted turbulent, it is expected that people have adapted to the situation and eventually have shifted between several investment instruments - also, that people were influenced in the form of changing focus regarding investor keywords like diversification, risk tolerance and others. Therefore, an empirical study with the help of a questionnaire is done. Expectations for the future development of the investors are also addressed. In view of the limited time and resources available for the preparation of this scientific work, it is pointed out that external studies are also included in the search for results and new findings. The sum of the results of all studies including the survey conducted in this thesis is then finally used to answer the research topic or the question. It feels like there is barely other news presented by the media as COVID-19 affects economy and social life very much in many if not all countries on our planet. That is not very surprising as the numbers of the worldwide production in the first quarter of 2020 decreased by about 15.5 percent, what could lead to a total decrease of 4.9 percent in 2020 as the DIW in Berlin estimates Also, the current situation on the labor market, which is important for lots of people, does not reassure at all. When zooming in and only looking at Germany in this regard, it can be stated that the number of new gained employed persons decreases a lot comparing it to past quarters. This could lead to people not being able to pay their rent, credits and other bills what could have tremendous impact to other factor markets and social life of many people. Closed businesses, increased working from home and travel restrictions also caused a decrease of customer spending as the value of the first quarter of 2020 is around three percent lower than the previous quarter.
