Book excerpt: This paper investigates how the development of the livestock sector can contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction in the continent, with the ultimate objective of identifying major information gaps critical to designing and implementing successful livestock sector policies and investments. As a first step, the paper presents an analysis of African consumption of animal-source foods. This is rapidly growing and is forecast to continue doing so. It therefore provides opportunities for demand-led growth. This focus is distinct from the more traditional, production-oriented entry point. To understand opportunities for poverty reduction, this paper reviews both the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of African markets for livestock products, in this case animal-source foods. Second, rather than exploring production and productivity constraints, which are known to a large extent, the paper focuses on the incentives that rural households have to invest in their livestock to overcome those constraints. Indeed, farmers often fail to adopt readily available technologies. To analyze incentives, the paper reviews two intertwined dimensions of households' livestock activities, namely herd and flock size and livestock-derived income. The paper concludes by identifying investment priorities for improving the quantity and quality of livestock information so that decision makers will be better able to formulate and implement investments in the livestock sector that effectively contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

This report focuses on NRM in the arid rangelands used by pastoralists in Africa and the Middle East, offering guidelines for development. An introductory chapter on the nature of NRM is followed by advice on preparing for project intervention and by guidelines for specific project components. A concluding chapter considers the broader implications for international agencies, particularly the World Bank. Eight annexes provide additional background information and advice, as well as a user guide for practitioners.

The objectives of this report are first to describe the patterns and changing structures of the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) livestock sector and secondly to explore innovations that can help to address the complex trade-offs involved in investing in the development of a sustainable livestock sector. The report reviews trends in consumption, production and trade of major livestock commodities and feed in the four subregions of SSA and presents an overview of key issues facing the sector. A scenario for the SSA livestock sector in 2030 is developed using the IMPACT model. It shows significant growth of production across all major livestock commodities with poultry and pork growing faster than ruminant meat production. A series of technical and institutional innovations show opportunities to address the challenges of sustainably intensifying livestock production in SSA. They include improved forages, improved fodder conservation, artificial insemination combined with estrus synchronization, intensive beekeeping, livestock masterplans, livestock asset transfer programs, indexbased livestock insurance and livestock market information systems. The report concludes that livestock plays multiple key roles in the food systems in SSA and will continue to do so in the coming years. The complexity of the system and the multiple trade-offs imply a need for policy makers to shift from frequent "benign neglect" to actively invest in the analytical capacity to understand the changing roles and issues in SSA livestock development. In spite of important divergences on the future role, opportunities and risks associated with livestock production and consumption, developed economies and SSA nations will benefit from international scientific cooperation to jointly tackle the complex issues facing livestock production as part of the envisaged global food system.

Book excerpt: Meat, Milk & More: Policy Innovations to Shepherd Inclusive and Sustainable Livestock Systems in Africa highlights options for sustainably promoting growth in the livestock sector, drawing from what four African countries—Ethiopia, Mali, South Africa, and Uganda—have done successfully in terms of institutional and policy innovation as well as programmatic interventions. By adapting these lessons to countries’ specific contexts and scaling them up across the continent, African governments can meet their national and international commitments to agricultural growth and transformation.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, language: English, abstract: Ethiopia is one of the Sub-Saharan Africa's developing countries with a large potential in livestock, being 1st among African countries and 9th in the world. Dairying is one of the livestock production systems practiced in almost all over Ethiopia. The cattle population was estimated at about 50.9 million of which indigenous breeds accounted for 99.19 % while the rest is hybrids and pure exotic breeds. The main objective of this seminar is to review the challenges and opportunities of investment in dairy sector in Ethiopia. Dairy production in Ethiopia was mostly traditional and formal dairy production started in the early 1950s. In Ethiopia the three major production systems are: traditional smallholder; privatized state; and urban and peri-urban. Ethiopians consume less dairy products than per capita milk consumption and the country is not known to export dairy product and spent more money on importing milk and milk products. The livestock sector in general and the dairy sub-sector in particular do not make a substantial contribution to the national income, despite its large size, due to different challenges. The challenges are those attributed to demand and supply sides. Demand side includes population growth, seasonality of demand, low per capita consumption, low demand and high transaction costs. Supply side challenges can be: livestock population, animal health problem, feed and nutrition, low productivity and genetics, limited access and high cost of dairy heifers/cows, quality problem, collection problems, institutional concern, lack of technical support, inadequate extension and training services, lack of infrastructures, lack of access to land and lack of credit. This challenge lowers the investment activity in the sector in Ethiopia. Dairy sector investments have also different opportunities like huge resource base and potentia

Book excerpt: "This paper proposes a methodology to examine the potential of existing NAFSIPs to generate climate change benefits. A rapid screening methodology is presented and applied to 14 NAFSIPs, all of which include agricultural development programmes/sub-programmes that benefit both adaptation to slow-onset climatic change and extreme events, and climate change mitigation. On average, about 60 percent of the activities planned are expected to generate climate benefits in terms of slow-onset climate change, 18 percent adaptation to extreme events, and 19 percent climate change mitigation."--Provided by publisher.
