Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Investment By Charities considers charity trustees' powers to make social investments and their duties when doing so, and examines whether anything can be done by way of law reform to make those powers and duties clearer. Charities have traditionally both spent their funds in support of their charitable objectives, and invested so as to generate further funds for future initiatives. A charity making a social investment combines these objectives in one transaction, seeking to achieve both its charitable purposes and a financial benefit. Social investments include: individual investments, such as simple loans and share purchases; collective social investment where multiple investors pool their funds to achieve certain social outcomes; and social impact bonds.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiduciaries who invest assets held by a charity must act as prudent investors. This Article examines the legal rules that apply to these fiduciaries, examining the duty of loyalty and the duty of prudent administration for trustees of charitable trusts and directors of nonprofit corporations. The Article focuses on the duty to act as a prudent investor and the question of whether a charitable fiduciary can consider the charity's mission or purpose when making investment decisions. Recent developments in the laws that regulate investing by fiduciaries provide guidance, and the Article concludes that these rules permit consideration of a charity's mission as one of many factors a prudent investor considers. The Article briefly examines the history of socially responsible investing, reviews the development of mission investing, and discusses three types of socially responsible investing: screens, proxy voting, and community investing. Recent data show improvements in the returns of screened funds and increased interest by charities in mission investing. Fiduciaries must exercise care and judgment in making investment decisions, but mission investing can meet the legal standards that apply to fiduciaries as long as the fiduciaries act with prudence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonizing Wealth is a provocative analysis of the dysfunctional colonial dynamics at play in philanthropy and finance. Award-winning philanthropy executive Edgar Villanueva draws from the traditions from the Native way to prescribe the medicine for restoring balance and healing our divides. Though it seems counterintuitive, the philanthropic industry has evolved to mirror colonial structures and reproduces hierarchy, ultimately doing more harm than good. After 14 years in philanthropy, Edgar Villanueva has seen past the field's glamorous, altruistic façade, and into its shadows: the old boy networks, the savior complexes, and the internalized oppression among the “house slaves,” and those select few people of color who gain access. All these funders reflect and perpetuate the same underlying dynamics that divide Us from Them and the haves from have-nots. In equal measure, he denounces the reproduction of systems of oppression while also advocating for an orientation towards justice to open the floodgates for a rising tide that lifts all boats. In the third and final section, Villanueva offers radical provocations to funders and outlines his Seven Steps for Healing. With great compassion—because the Native way is to bring the oppressor into the circle of healing—Villanueva is able to both diagnose the fatal flaws in philanthropy and provide thoughtful solutions to these systemic imbalances. Decolonizing Wealth is a timely and critical book that preaches for mutually assured liberation in which we are all inter-connected.

Book excerpt: With several empirical evidences, this book advocates on the importance of human capital of persons with disabilities and demands the paradigm shift from charity into investment approach. Society in general believes that people with disabilities cannot benefit from education, cannot participate in the labour market and cannot be contributing members to families and countries. To invalidate such assumptions, this book describes how education in particular helps make persons with disabilities achieve economic independence and social inclusion. For the first time, detailed analyses of returns to the investment in education and nexus between disability, education, employability and occupational options are discussed. Moreover, other chapters describe disability and poverty followed by the discussion of barriers behind why persons with disabilities are unable to obtain education despite the significantly higher returns. These foundational themes recur throughout the book.
