Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Veterinary medicine, Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, language: English, abstract: Objective of this review is focus on effect of feeding protected fat and protected protein on milk yield and its composition and how these nutrients are protected. Many researchers in this review investigate that the responses are highly dependent on the type of fat and protein supplement and the stage of lactation. A higher milk response was observed with saturated than with unsaturated fat supplements. Diet with added fat increase milk production compared with a control diet without added fat in cows. Feeding of bypass fat resulted in significant increase in milk yield and Fat Corrected Milk yield particularly in early lactation. The source of Protected fat are (origin (animal, plant, processed or whole oilseeds, calcium salts) and Cereal Grains such as corn, wheat, Barly, oil seeds, sun flower, cotton seed, soybeans and canola). The supplementation of protected protein in the diets of lactating animals increases the milk yield due to proportionate increase in the supply of amino acids to the host postruminally Milk yield in cows fed protected methionine for the whole experimental period was numerically higher than in cows of the other groups. However, the difference was not statistically significant .At the centeral high land of Ethiopia the Treatment of shredded wheat and barley straw with urea, molasses, salt and water prior to feeding is a technology that should be considered . Cows with excessive body tissue mobilisation at this stage may take up to 20 weeks to regain a positive energy balance status. Key words milk yield, composition ,protected fat , protein protected

Book excerpt: Three experiments were conducted with the goals to; 1) determine conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) effects on energy balance (EBAL) and milk production parameters during periods of nutrient/energy stress, and 2) investigate temporal CLA effects on mammary lipogenic gene expression. Study one was designed to determine if abomasal CLA infusion could reduce milk fat synthesis and partition nutrients towards alternative milk components in feed-restricted rotationally-grazed dairy cows. Data indicate abomasally-infusing CLA reduced milk fat synthesis in nutrient restricted grazing dairy cows and improved calculated EBAL and milk protein production. Another period of transitory stress experienced by the dairy cow is immediately postpartum and study two objectives were to feed rumen inert-CLA to evoke milk fat depression (MFD) and investigate production and bioenergetic parameters. Data indicated a high CLA dose (3x that needed in established lactation) inhibited milk fat synthesis immediately postpartum and improved calculated EBAL in grazing dairy cows. A curvilinear relationship existed between the extent of CLA-induced MFD and milk yield response. Moderate CLA-induced MFD (3̃5%) tended to increase milk yield whereas extensive MFD (3̃5%) diminished this response. Additionally, SCD inhibition was temporally independent indicating SCD activity and membrane fluidity are not the reason for diminished milk yield effects. Furthermore, data indicate that de novo fatty acids and trans-10, cis-12 CLA content don't appreciably change during early lactation, even though the extent of MFD increased, indicating neither NEFA competition nor de novo fatty acid contribution are primary reasons for reduced CLA-mammary sensitivity. Study three investigated intravenous CLA infusion effects on temporal mammary lipogenic gene expression to determine if trans-10, cis-12 CLA down regulates expression of a key gene (i.e. acetyl CoA carboxylase, ACC, the rate limiting enzyme in de novo fatty acid synthesis) and reduction in other mammary lipid synthesis genes is due to lack of substrate (i.e. malonyl CoA), or an alternative indirect mechanism. Data indicated however, that mammary lipogenic genes (ACC, fatty acid synthetase and SCD) followed a similar temporal pattern, providing more support for a global regulator (i.e. sterol regulatory element binding protein-1, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- or nuclear factor-B) rather than a specific key enzyme effect.

Perfield (II.) and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk fat depression (MFD) is a challenging problem that involves the interrelationship between digestive processes in the rumen and the synthesis of milk fat by the mammary gland. Recent investigations have resulted in the biohydrogenation theory to explain MFD, and the concept that under certain dietary conditions pathways of rumen biohydrogenation are altered to produce unique fatty acid intermediates, some of which are potent inhibitors of milk fat synthesis. Trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is one such intermediate, and the relationship between this isomer and a reduced milk fat output is well recognized. However, it was not known if these effects were direct or due to an intermediate produced in the metabolism of this CLA isomer. Therefore, an initial experiment provided the Delta6 desaturation product of trans-10, cis -12 CLA (cis-6, trans-10, cis-12 18:3) by abomasal infusion and it was demonstrated to not affect milk fat synthesis. These data substantiated a mechanism of action directly involving trans-10, cis-12 CLA, rather than one requiring metabolism of the isomer or the involvement of a downstream metabolite. Continuing research in the area of MFD has led investigators to suggest a role for other biohydrogenation intermediates in the regulation of milk fat synthesis. Candidate fatty acids whose increases were correlated with MFD were identified through a systematic and detailed sample analysis. Compounds that were tested for effects on milk fat in the dairy cow included: trans-8, cis-10 CLA, cis-9, trans-11 CLA, trans-10, trans-12 CLA and cis-11, trans-13 CLA. Despite the uptake and incorporation into milk fat of these CLA isomers by the mammary gland, none affected milk fat synthesis or any other variables related to milk production. The application of CLA as a management tool to induce a controlled reduction in milk fat production has been suggested and would require it to be in a form to avoid metabolism in the rumen. Amide-protected and lipid-encapsulated protection methods were tested for their ability to deliver trans -10, cis-12 CLA post-ruminally for absorption and subsequent regulation of milk fat. Incorporation of this CLA isomer into milk fat was determined to be similar for both supplements.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary fat is an important component on the diets of lactating dairy cattle. Concentration of dietary fat can be increase by feeding oilseeds or enriched fat supplements which allows cattle to partition energy differently which can lead to increases in milk fat concentration, milk fat yield, or milk yield. One common oilseed fed to dairy cattle is cottonseed, as it is high in fiber but also relatively high in fat compared to other common feedstuffs. Fat supplements are very high in fat (>95%) but are more expensive so dairy producers often strike a balance and may feed both fat supplements and oilseeds to dairy cattle. The first objective of this thesis was to investigate the effects of cottonseed on milk production in dairy cattle. Previous research feeding cottonseed fed inclusion rates of cottonseed in excess of 15% of dry matter intake (DMI), but cattle were producing less milk and consuming less so therefore, the actual mass of the cottonseed consumed may not be as high as contemporary dairy cattle. This thesis fed cottonseed at up to 9.9% of DMI and found that cottonseed inclusion into the diets of multiparous cattle did not affect milk yield or milk composition but led to a decrease in DMI indicating that it could be safely fed to mature cows. In primiparous cattle, cottonseed inclusion induced milk fat-depression, indicating that the level of unsaturated fatty acids in the diet was greater than the biohydrogenation potential of the ruminal microbes of these animals. The second part of this thesis was to examine the effects of increased concentrations of an unsaturated fatty acid (cis-9 C18:1; oleic acid) in a prilled fat supplement on the milk production and milk composition in dairy cows. Previous research suggests that oleic acid may increase digestibility of dietary fatty acids and consequently increase the amount of preformed fat for milk fat synthesis. This experiment indicated that fat supplementation in multiparous cows may decrease milk yield and DMI but was no effect of increased levels of oleic acid on other production components in dairy cattle. Further investigation of the data collected for each half of the thesis is required to determine the effects on the respective methods of fat supplementation on fatty acid digestibility in lactating dairy cattle.
