A non-isolated converter which uses a single common inductor for all the outputs is termed single-inductor multi-output converter. In a multi-output converter, a part of the converter circuit is common for all the outputs and a part of the circuit is exclusive to each output. This brings in cost advantages and improved power density. Fewer components also result in reduced losses. Multi-output converters have become very popular recently and many low power and portable applications widely use such converters. Since a part of the converter is common for all the outputs, achange in the load of one output affects the other outputs also. This is known as cross-regulation and the converters have to handle this apart from line and load regulation. This is what makes the topic complex and interesting and provides scope for further investigation, despite the large volume of research work already existing in this area. This thesis attempts to identify new topologies and control approaches for configuring such multi-output converters in all spheres, isolated or non-isolated, converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode or in continuous conduction mode and with uni-polar or bi-polar outputs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, a new satellite platform power architecture based on paralleled three-port DC/DC converters is proposed to reduce the total satellite power system mass. Moreover, a four-port DC/DC converter is proposed for renewable energy applications where several renewable sources are employed. Compared to the traditional two-port converter, three-port or four-port converters are classified as multi-port converters. Multi-port converters have less component count and less conversion stage than the traditional power processing solution which adopts several independent two-port converters. Due to their advantages multi-port converters recently have attracted much attention in academia, resulting in many topologies for various applications. But all proposed topologies have at least one of the following disadvantages: 1) no bidirectional port; 2) lack of proper isolation; 3) too many active and passive components; 4) no soft-switching. In addition, most existing research focuses on the topology investigation, but lacks study on the multi-port converter's control aspects, which are actually very challenging since it is a multi-input multi-output control system and has so many cross-coupled control loops. A three-port converter is proposed and used for space applications. The topology features bidirectional capability, low component count and soft-switching for all active switches, and has one output port to meet certain isolating requirements. For the system level control strategy, the multi-functional central controller has to achieve maximal power harvesting for the solar panel, the battery charge control for the battery, and output voltage regulation for the dc bus. In order to design these various controllers, a good dynamic model of the control object should be obtained first. Therefore, a modeling procedure based on a traditional state-space averaging method is proposed to characterize the dynamic behavior of such a multi-port converter. The proposed modeling method is clear and easy to follow, and can be extended for other multi-port converters. In order to boost the power level of the multi-port converter system and allow redundancy, the three-port converters are paralleled together. The current sharing control for the multi-port converters has rarely been reported. A so called "dual loop" current sharing control structure is identified to be suitable for the paralleled multi-port converters, since its current loop and the voltage loop can be considered and designed independently, which simplifies the multi-port converter's loop analysis. The design criteria for that dual loop structure are also studied to achieve good current sharing dynamics while guaranteeing the system stability. The renewable energy applications are continuously demanding the low cost solution, so that the renewable energy might have a more competitive dollar per kilowatt figure than the traditional fossil fuel power generation. For this reason, the multi-port converter is a good candidate for such applications due to the low component count and low cost. Especially when several renewable sources are combined to increase the power delivering certainty, the multi-port solution is more beneficial since it can replace more separate converters. A four-port converter is proposed to interface two different renewable sources, such as the wind turbine and the solar panel, one bidirectional battery device, and the galvanically isolated load. The four-port converter is based on the traditional half-bridge topology making it easy for the practicing power electronics engineer to follow the circuit design. Moreover, this topology can be extended into n input ports which allow more input renewable sources. Finally, the work is summarized and concluded, and references are listed.

Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed analysis of switched-capacitor DC-DC converters that are entirely integrated on a single chip and establishes that these converters are mainly limited by the large parasitic coupling, the low capacitor energy density, and the fact that switched-capacitor converter topologies only have a fixed voltage conversion ratio. The authors introduce the concept of Advanced Multiphasing as a way to circumvent these limitations by having multiple out-of-phase parallel converter cores interact with each other to minimize capacitor charging losses, leading to several techniques that demonstrate record efficiency and power-density, and even a fundamentally new type of switched-capacitor topology that has a continuously-scalable conversion ratio. Provides single-source reference to the recently-developed Advanced Multiphasing concept; Enables greatly improved performance and capabilities in fully integrated switched-capacitor converters; Enables readers to design DC-DC converters, where multiple converter cores are put in parallel and actively interact with each other over several phases to improve their capabilities.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been recent interest in expansion of direct-current (dc) networks, motivated mainly by proliferation of renewable energy sources, electrical energy storage, and electronic loads which operate with dc power. One of the key challenges hindering the adoption of dc networks is the lack of high performance dc-dc converter topologies to accommodate energy exchange, at high power levels, between dc buses of different voltage levels. Conventional dc-dc power converters such as the boost or the flyback face a fundamental limitation in operating at high power levels and/or voltage conversion ratios. As these topologies utilize a single semiconductor switch, their maximum attainable power and voltage rating is dependent on the highest power rated semiconductors available. Moreover, regardless of the operating power, these topologies suffer from high losses and ringing when operated at high conversion ratios. In recognizing the shortcomings of conventional topologies for employment in high power and/or conversion ratio applications, a new topology is proposed that provides an efficient and cost-effective solution. The proposed modular topology is constructed from identical converter cells which may be connected in parallel and series to share the overall power stress. As a result, the dependency of the topology's power and conversion ratio on existing semiconductor technology is insignificant. Moreover, the topology is capable of supporting bidirectional power flow exchange between multiple sources and loads which makes it suitable for a wide range of power conversion applications. The proposed topology can achieve a conversion ratio of six with half of its switches operating at a duty cycle value 25% lower and the other half of its switches operating at a duty cycle value 40% lower than that of the conventional boost converter while requiring only 15% higher switch volt-ampere rating. The proposed converter's operating mechanism is described, and its analytical steady-state and dynamic models are derived. In investigating the topology's dynamic model, a modular control algorithm is devised for closed-loop operation of the topology. The ability of the topology to operate as a multiple-input multiple-output converter is also investigated through similar analytical and control studies. Simulation and experimental studies are carried out to evaluate the converter's performance under both steady-state and dynamic operation.

This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing demand for efficiency and power density pushes Si-based devices to some of their inherent material limits, including those related to temperature operation, switching frequency, and blocking voltage. Recently, SiC-based power devices are promising candidates for high-power and high-frequency switching applications. Today, SiC MOSFETs are commercially available from several manufacturers. Although technology affiliated with SiC MOSFETs is improving rapidly, many challenges remain, and some of them are investigated in this work. The research work in this dissertation is divided into the three following parts. Firstly, the static and switching characteristics of the state-of-the-art 1.2 kV planar and double-trench SiC MOSFETs from two different manufacturers are evaluated. The effects of different biasing voltages, DC link voltages, and temperatures are analysed. The characterisation results show that the devices exhibit superior switching performances under different operating conditions. Moreover, several aspects of using the SiC MOSFET’s body diode in a DC/DC converter are investigated, comparing the body-diodes of planar and double-trench devices. Reverse recovery is evaluated in switching tests considering the case temperature, switching rate, forward current, and applied voltage. Based on the measurement results, the junction temperature is estimated to guarantee safe operation. A simple electro-thermal model is proposed in order to estimate the maximum allowed switching frequency based on the thermal design of the SiC devices. Using these results, hard- and soft-switching converters are designed, and devices are characterised as being in continuous operation at a very high switching frequency of 1 MHz. Thereafter, the SiC MOSFETs are operated in a continuous mode in a 10 kW / 100-250 kHz buck converter, comparing synchronous rectification, the use of the body diode, and the use of an external Schottky diode. Further, the parallel operation of the planar devices is considered. Thus, the paralleling of SiC MOSFETs is investigated before comparing the devices in continuous converter operation. In this regard, the impact of the most common mismatch parameters on the static and dynamic current sharing of the transistors is evaluated, showing that paralleling of SiC MOSFETs is feasible. Subsequently, an analytical model of SiC MOSFETs for switching loss optimisation is proposed. The analytical model exhibits relatively close agreement with measurement results under different test conditions. The proposed model tracks the oscillation effectively during both turn-on and –off transitions. This has been achieved by considering the influence of the most crucial parasitic elements in both power and gate loops. In the second part, a comprehensive short-circuit ruggedness evaluation focusing on different failure modes of the planar and double-trench SiC devices is presented. The effects of different biasing voltages, DC link voltages, and gate resistances are evaluated. Additionally, the temperature-dependence of the short-circuit capability is evaluated, and the associated failure modes are analysed. Subsequently, the design and test of two different methods for overcurrent protection are proposed. The desaturation technique is applied to the SiC MOSFETs and compared to a second method that depends on the stray inductance of the devices. Finally, the benefits of using SiC devices in continuous high-frequency, high-power DC/DC converters is experimentally evaluated. In this regard, a design optimisation of a high-frequency transformer is introduced, and the impact of different core materials, conductor designs, and winding arrangements are evaluated. A ZVZCS Phase-Shift Full-Bridge unidirectional DC/DC converter is proposed, using only the parasitic leakage inductance of the transformer. Experimental results for a 10 kW, (100-250) kHz prototype indicate an efficiency of up to 98.1% for the whole converter. Furthermore, an optimized control method is proposed to minimise the circulation current in the isolated bidirectional dual active bridge DC/DC converter, based on a modified dual-phase-shift control method. This control method is also experimentally compared with traditional single-phase shift control, yielding a significant improvement in efficiency. The experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis and show that the proposed control can enhance the overall converter efficiency and expand the ZVZCS range.

Book excerpt: Computers play an important role in the analyzing and designing of modern DC-DC power converters. This book shows how the widely used analysis techniques of averaging and linearization can be applied to DC-DC converters with the aid of computers. Obtained dynamical equations may then be used for control design. The book is composed of two chapters. Chapter 1 focuses on the extraction of control-to-output transfer function. A second-order converter (a buck converter) and a fourth-order converter (a Zeta converter) are studied as illustrative examples in this chapter. Both ready-to-use software packages, such as PLECS® and MATLAB® programming, are used throught this chapter. The input/output characteristics of DC-DC converters are the object of considerations in Chapter 2. Calculation of input/output impedance is done with the aid of MATLAB® programming in this chapter. The buck, buck-boost, and boost converter are the most popular types of DC-DC converters and used as illustrative examples in this chapter. This book can be a good reference for researchers involved in DC-DC converters dynamics and control.

Book excerpt: Multiple-input power converters are receiving significant research attention as they offer several advantages over conventional converters, specifically their ability to interface multiple energy sources of various kinds. Additionally, they have promising features such as less components, higher power density and centralized control. A novel multiple-input single-output DC-DC converter topology is proposed for effective energy management. The topology is designed depending on the conventional structure of boost and buck converters and benefits greatly from this combination. Effective energy management strategy is used and a simple control system is introduced by utilizing voltage and current control. The converter is simulated and implemented in hardware testing as a 300W system to confirm the performance and validation of the topology and it is capable of supplying constant output power through different input sources with any voltage variation. The results show a high performance and all of the operating modes have been investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DC-DC converters have many applications in the modern world. They provide the required power to the communication backbones, they are used in digital devices like laptops and cell phones, and they have widespread applications in electric cars, to just name a few. DC-DC converters require negative feedback to provide a suitable output voltage or current for the load. Obtaining a stable output voltage or current in presence of disturbances such as: input voltage changes and/or output load changes seems impossible without some form of control. This book tries to train the art of controller design for DC-DC converters. Chapter 1 introduces the DC-DC converters briefly. It is assumed that the reader has the basic knowledge of DC-DC converter (i.e., a basic course in power electronics). The reader learns the disadvantages of open loop control in Chapter 2. Simulation of DC-DC converters with the aid of Simulink® is discussed in this chapter as well. Extracting the dynamic models of DC-DC converters is studied in Chapter 3. We show how MATLAB® and a software named KUCA can be used to do the cumbersome and error-prone process of modeling automatically. Obtaining the transfer functions using PSIM® is studied as well. These days, softwares are an integral part of engineering sciences. Control engineering is not an exception by any means. Keeping this in mind, we design the controllers using MATLAB® in Chapter 4. Finally, references are provided at the end of each chapter to suggest more information for an interested reader. The intended audiences for this book are practice engineers and academians.
